Holistic Discernment — Mercury Ingress Virgo

Mercury enters earthy Virgo at 12:44 pm EDT (16:44 UT) tomorrow, initiating an apparent theme of holistic discernment. Indeed, from tomorrow to Sept. 2 (when Mercury leaves Virgo), the astrology as a whole might best be handled if you can honor your big picture while discerning the most important detail at any given time.

Astrology by Len Wallick

Holistic discernment is a tall order. It’s not really multi-tasking. It’s handling whatever details a particular moment presents so as to keep the big picture together.

In order to keep the big picture together, you have to see it. It means knowing your most enduring priorities and formulating long-term objectives.

As is so often the case with a planet entering a sign, Mercury will show you the apparent theme of its subsequent tenure by the first aspect it makes when it comes home to Virgo — one of the two places on the zodiac Mercury rules, along with Gemini.

Mercury will ingress its Virgo domain only minutes after the Moon enters the sign of its exaltation — earthy Taurus. That means both Mercury and the Moon will be implicitly expressing strongly while simultaneously forming a near-exact earth trine aspect.

Fundamental astrology tells us that the the first aspect an object makes when entering a sign is important and indicative. That’s a holistic perspective. The reason for the importance attributed and the indications assigned are to be found in the details.

As regarding Mercury’s entrance into Virgo tomorrow, the details consist of the archetypes Mercury and the Moon represent, as well as what common element connects Virgo to Taurus.

When it comes to multi-tasking planets, Mercury is without equal. Manifestations of mind, thinking, communication, transportation and electronic gizmos are just some of the ways Mercury shows up in your life. What nearly all representations of Mercury have in common, however, is a means or a need to discern.

The Moon, on the other hand, correlates with the body more than the mind. The lunar brush also tends to be very broad. What you feel, as well as personal (even inexpressible) issues of comfort, safety, nourishment, childhood and reverie prevail when the Moon comes down to Earth.

And they come together through astrology’s earthly element that both the Moon and Mercury will occupy tomorrow. While trine aspects are not quite the same thorough merger of energies that conjunctions (two objects in the same degree of the same sign) are, the sign element in common between planets in a trine does tends to open a clear channel between them.

The trine connection between objects in the same degree of different signs with the earth element in common tends to be of the ear-to-ground variety. If you have ever actually put your ear to the ground, you know how doing so connects you with widely separated events to give you a bigger picture than nearly any other use of your un-augmented senses.

Similarly, tomorrow’s earth trine from the physically oriented Moon to mental Mercury will support a big-picture perspective of mind and body as fundamentally one and the same. From such a personal, yet readily discernible experience, you can proceed to a wider application.

You can work to see the entanglements instead of the compartmentalizations in other areas of your life. Doing so will help you to discern how your choices at any given moment can (and probably should) be made with more than just the moment in mind.

If there is anything to the idea that Mercury’s ingress tomorrow will provide you with a holistic picture of its entire tour of Virgo, you will be able to employ the protocol of seeing entanglements to your advantage on a day-to-day basis for the rest of this month.

You will know you did something right if, sometime before the end of August, you are able to look back on Mercury’s entrance to Virgo and say to yourself: “I was here then.” Should that happen, you will also have a taste of the truly profound potential holistic discernment entails.

  1. Holly: Thank you. It appears as though you are handling your transitions admirably. Thank you most of for sharing your inspirational adaptive proficiency. You are at the very least an inspiration to me during my own transitions (for which my proficiency leaves something to be desired so far). Love the Spongebob quote.

be: Once again, you are picking up on what (as always) brevity and cohesion requires me to infer between the lines. Mercury’s initiating conjunction with Transpluto and subsequent opposition to Neptune were part of what i had in mind while writing this piece. Then, upon researching Mercury’s entire time in Virgo, i saw a big picture just open up. i’m encouraged to know the words i found for it all work for you. Thank you for the link to Lynn Koiner – an excellent reference.

Chief Niwots Son: Your words are most encouraging – more than i dare say. Writing this piece was taking a risk, going out on a limb. Thank you so very much.

    P. Sophie: Please accept my heartfelt thanks for your contribution today. It is gratifying beyond words to know that my humble service supported your bold decision. i envy your trek to Shasta, it sounds simply wonderful.

Ms. Moreno: Thank you! i’m relieved beyond description that the the term i cobbled together expresses itself for you as intended. Your comment today is a much appreciated service.

  2. Thank you Len as ever always learn so much from you.

Tomorrow at this time I should be hiking up Mt. Shasta. Heading up now… I was not planning to go as (blah, blah) other responsibilities I should attend to. But I woke this morning with an clarity of an earthly pull. Following my intuition to get the minerals of the springs for a healing weekend of soaks, and feet on, hands in this sacred place of earth. Being away and there brings one to a different fuller perspective, of center and integration. Glad I dropped all and followed my higher self, and now reading your beautiful forecast the cosmic alignments as well.

  3. I see your point and it’s a good one Len; multi-tasking does detract from attending to details. As to your noting Mercury’s entry into Virgo providing a “holistic picture” of it’s tour of this sign, it’s ironic that Mercury will also make a conjunction with Transpluto at 0+ Virgo, whom astrologer Lynn Koiner says is all about achieving wholeness and integration. Personally, I’m focused on Mercury’s opposition to Neptune this Monday night and hoping any detailed work will not be necessary at the time. However, mixing up those energies (Mercury, Neptune, Virgo, Pisces) could be quite creative don’t you think?

  4. Just in time for lunch tomorrow! I will symbolically be making an extra sandwich for my boss lickety split :). Got my class set up for college, got a much needed haircut, and ate out yesterday. All the while it was raining buckets. To quote Spongebob, “I’m ready, I’m ready”. Hope Mercury likes cheese.
