Weekend Astrology: Sun ingresses Leo

The days following this week’s grand cross (Uranus, Pluto, Mars and the Moon making right angles to each other from the early cardinal signs), which held a lot of pressure and potential for outburst, have witnessed violent and very troubling world events. It’s a reminder that astrology unfolds gradually at some times, suddenly at others. On a personal level, you may have taken the time between the grand cross and yesterday’s New Moon in Cancer to pull in a little in preparation for the Moon’s new cycle and the Sun’s shift into Leo.

Simplified chart section showing the Sun in the last, or ‘anaretic’, degree of Cancer tomorrow. Also shown is retrograde Mercury (green glyph with horns) and the Moon, which will enter Virgo tomorrow at 1:24 pm EDT.

That solar event occurs Sunday just past 6:00 am EDT. Between now and then, we have a window of time in which it may pay be open to the unexpected, even if you’re feeling a little raw still.

Right now, the Sun is in its next-to-last degree of Cancer. At 4:53 am EDT tomorrow, it will enter the last degree of this sign. This degree in any sign is called ‘anaretic’, and it is a point that can often come with a sense of urgency or restlessness when the Sun is there. As in, oh, come on let’s just get to the next sign already! It can serve you well, however, to stay present and not jump ahead.

The Sun in the last degree is often ‘void of course’, meaning it will not make any major aspects to major planets before ingressing the next sign. This is the case with the Sun in this last degree of Cancer.

Eric has written about the Sun VOC in the last degree of a sign that, “These are often unusual phases, brief though they may be, where the unlikely seems to have a higher rating in the probability field. With care, they can be used creatively and reasonably safely. It’s one of those times to work from an idea or to let things play out as they will; but either way, to move delicately, as if under water.”

That last bit is especially perfect if you’ve been following the crab metaphor of recent posts. Yet it may feel like a curious dilemma if you had been champing at the bit to move forward with projects now that the Moon is newly waxing. However, moving delicately, working from an idea or letting things play out are not the same as stasis. It’s more like acting with an extra level of deliberateness while still remaining completely open to serendipity. Kind of like how if you’re driving too fast down the highway you may not be able to stop in time to investigate something intriguing or avoid something dangerous. If you travel at the speed limit you can make sudden adjustments and follow the suggestions of your intuition.

Speaking of intuition, the Sabian symbol (as interpreted by Dane Rudhyar in An Astrological Mandala) for the last degree of Cancer is, “A Greek muse weighing newborn twins in golden scales.” It carries the keynote, “the intuitive weighing of alternatives.”

The symbol suggests that here, at the end of the Cancer cycle, something deeper than normal consciousness is considering the alternatives. Just like in the highway metaphor, keeping processes in motion as you make your decision will be beneficial as long as you’ve slowed your mind down just enough to hear and heed your Muse. Keep your inner eyes and ears peeled, and we’ll see you Monday in Leo.

  1. Something for our hearts to hold, the promise of a one in a million white buff calf … [correction: make that one in ten-million] … especially on the heels of another sacrificed to hate in Texas. We are down to the wire in polarized thought, these days; death nose to nose with life and … as tradition tells us … those serving as avitars and symbols of hope are too often in the crosshairs. So yes, thanks Len for the fascinating chart and Chief, for raising the topic. And interesting, isn’t it, that so many of our own PW tribe knew about it?

  2. Thanks, Chief and Len;
to many of us this is a very significant event. I find the story that the calf found its way into the fenced area where the bulls were kept and was not trampled or killed by the bulls, but instead had been circled and surrounded by them is significant of the nurturing power and appearance of male energy and it touches my soul deeply. Thanks for covering this event here in this respectful way.

  3. For me these days are quite weird. Today, I broke a cup, bumped my head on a window frame and bumped a shoulder in a door just passing through it. Really small things, but they reveal that the energy is all hectic. I stll feel angry – the thing that started a few days ago when Mars entered in the square.
I checked and… yes, Moon just entered in Virgo. That’s always challenging for me. But this time I feel particularly ‘misplaced’.

  4. Thank you Len, far more than I had hoped for, and much appreciation for your quick response. This is a potent chart and I’ll meditate on all the precise connections you detailed. As I Gemini native with Virgo rising, I see why the news of the White Buffalo’s arrival resonated so strongly for me. Thank you!

  5. Chief Niwots Son: I read the article on the deliberate slaughter of the male white buffalo in May. Yet, another buffalo born so quickly after this travesty can only herald good things. It should be a wonderful ceremony.

  6. I agree with Len. Amanda, belle parole scritte!

This last week, I have been under some depression and it feels as though I am unmotivated or better clearly, unknowing what direction to go. I have also discovered a fear. I actually said it out loud and it was stupid sounding: I am afraid of being in a relationship because I fear losing my independence. But who is suggestion that I have to lose that?

So, this woman I am interested in, I went to see her art opening. I thought of buying some small flowers. But I didn’t. Thank god because I would have looked like una madre il figlio di mungitura di una mucca…

  7. Chief Niwots Son: Thank you. Please accept my service. The natal chart for the white buffalo’s birth has the ascendant at 27+ Virgo. That makes Mercury the classical chart ruler. At the time of birth, Mercury was direct at 16+ Cancer, 10th natal house in a precise semi-square to Jupiter at 1+ Gemini and in another precise semi-square to Orcus at 2+Virgo. That puts the white buffalo’s natal Orcus (12th natal house) in a precise square to its natal Jupiter and in a precise opposition to its natal Neptune. In a recent (recorded) interview with Eric, Melanie Reinhardt shared her insight on Orcus, which includes inter-species communication. The white buffalo’s natal Sun is at 25+ Gemini, 9th natal house, precisely on its mid-heaven at 27+ Gemini (precisely opposite the Galactic Center). Eric has often noted the power of the Gemini degrees opposite the Galactic Core. The white buffalo’s natal Moon is at 23+ Taurus, 8th natal house, conjunct Sedna, semi-square Uranus, opposing Juno, and sextile Varuna, all to the degree. Also precisely sextile the natal Moon is the white buffalo’s natal Vertex, just under the descendant. The natal Moon’s next aspect, about two hour’s after its birth was Ceres at 27 Taurus, on its way to conjoining the Sun two days later. Anytime the Sun is at the top of a chart, it’s a happy Sun, in its preferred place, in this case in a sextile to natal Pars Fortunae in Leo, 11th house. Moon is also happy in Taurus. Natal Chiron (6th house) square natal Venus (9th house) is powerful as well. An auspicious natal chart. It appears the white buffalo’s birth does have a message for us, and a hopeful, spiritual one at that. Perhaps a sign that we have not been forsaken by the Cosmos.

On the 28th, when the naming ceremony will take place (as i understand it), is the transiting Sun’s conjunction with retrograde Mercury in Leo, forming a fire trine with transiting Uranus and the transiting Sagittarius Moon. Good day for a ceremony.

Please, does that serve you well?

  8. Nothing seems to be “off-topic” anymore, here’s something I learned about today- a white buffalo bull calf was born in Connecticut on June 16th, and will be named in a formal ceremony next weekend by Lakota Elders and representatives from other tribes. Perhaps someone well-versed in running and interpreting charts might want to plug this into our on-going conversation.

A positive omen on this dark day.

  9. Amanda: Thank you. i love your thoughtful, gentle, yet deep and profound presentation in this blog today – it says so much and says it well.
