Full Moon Summons the Goddesses and Gods

Dear Friend and Reader:

We are three days from the Full Moon in Cancer, which will occur Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:26 PM EST. Assuming you can see the sky,В  Luna will be looking mighty large, and looming large in awareness. Inner emotional tension, insomnia and the struggle between what we feel and what is practical are among the energy signatures of this Moon.

This Full Moon will be conjunct an important and rarely spoken-of minor planet, Varuna. And it will be square another called Eris, the famous planet that resulted in the reorganization of the solar system’s categories in 2006. The Sun, Moon, Varuna and Eris are therefore in a tight cardinal sign T-square aspect involving Aries, Cancer and Capricorn. These are all signs of change, progress, action and movement — and the world is indeed moving right now.

Varuna and Eris are two distant, extremely slow moving planets that orbit our Sun well beyond Pluto (taking about three and six centuries to go around the Sun just once, respectively) and they are currently holding an exact square — a very rare event because these planets move so slowly and rarely form an aspect. Varuna is in Cancer. Eris stationed direct in Aries on Wednesday.

The square between these two points is apropos of the sense of invisible confusion that we cannot quite tell whether it’s within us or around us — or both. The world is in a brilliantly chaotic state right now; every bit of the astrology points to divine chaos, transition and a whirl into the unknown.

We might ask how small distant planets can have such an effect, and how we might be aware of what it is, if so. Astrology works in cycles and archetypes, not just by gravity. The figures involved may be obscure and the cycles involved long, but still we dance with them. Remember that people thought so little of Pluto that it took more than 50 years for the first book in English to come out about it. Now, nobody would deny that Pluto is a potent force. The same is true of Varuna and Eris.

In Small World Stories, we described Eris. She “is about how we make sense of who we are in troubled, chaotic times. She reveals how complex we really are, which fact remained just below the surface of awareness. She also represents the shadow feminine — the aspects of womanity that have been cast off as evil, dark, unacceptable and unmentionable. She is one of several of these archetypes that are gradually being embraced by astrology and to some extent by culture. This represents the idea that we are beginning to call back that disowned part of womanity and embrace her: the witch, the whore, the bitch, the unfulfilled woman; no matter what form she may take, the woman who is setting aside the war with herself and embracing her own selfhood.”

Varuna is the all-pervading presence behind reality: what we actually think of as “god.” He has many myths and delineations, and his name is still revered. At Planet Waves we usually refer to him as The Equalizer. There is the sense here that the indescribable inner chaos we are facing is precisely what unites and in a sense equalizes us.

There are many slow-moving planets in the degree range of this Full Moon — approximately 20 degrees, and this lunation picks up the energy of all of them. It makes a trine/sextile the ongoing Saturn-Uranus opposition (that is in Virgo-Pisces). Chiron and Neptune, close to a conjunction in Aquarius are in the same degree range; and these are square Sedna, one of those other really strong, distant planets, in Taurus.

All of this adds to big movement; large forces, and movement of the collective psyche, gathering for big change. We are indeed on the brink of many, many developments. Just look around, or feel your soul vibrating.

Yours & truly,
Eric Francis

  1. mystes,

I will miss your input while you are gone, but to address your last remarks, I want to tell you first that I agree that “all chaos is not equal” , but I think any chaos is chaos. It is difficult for me to scrutinize chaos, but I know when I’m in it. So, if moved to do so, the invocation of Eris would be an appeal for help to escape it. That’s my take anyway.

Not to belabor the equalizing (aka leveling) reference, I only want to point out that it hasn’t been attributed to Eris, but to another god who is and will be for a while, aspecting her. That is Varuna. He is the one bringing the equalizing factor to the table, if there is (or will be) any involved. Perhaps an example of his equalizing might be between the rich and the poor. Note that suicides in the news recently are rich people who have lost a lot of money, but are still rich. Go figure. Poor people however probably have their share of suicides that don’t make the news, but the rich and the poor are more equal now (regarding money) in that they both feel there is no reason to go on living.

Perhaps, in the case of the Isreal/Palestine situation Varuna might provide a way to make them more equal (maybe bird flu hits & takes their minds off of getting even) while working with Eris who would encourage them to raise their consciousness (group) level and “make sense of who they are in (these) troubled chaotic times”.

The more these gods & goddesses are studied and observed in the charts of events and people, the greater the likelihood of understanding their attributes. Your noting the motivation for Eris’ apple toss as way to expose the less-pretty parts of the beauties involved is a perfect example. I’m so relieved she’s not the bad-ass she appears to be on the surface, aren’t you?

  2. bK – Our Lady,

“Were you referring to the “equalizing” when you said leveling? Backtracked (sorta) and could not find it, but the equalizing is a Varuna thing per Eric, which I can see as a “level playing ground” perhaps.”

Hmm… I’ll have to consider that. I was hearing the invocation to Eris as a sort of co-chaos, co-misery. Leveling what exactly? I do not think all chaos is equal, having witnessed recently intentional malice creating chaos for its own “benefit” (and I do regard the word with the greatest askance). It was able to do so *because* of our laissez-faire, leveling attitude about it. I am speaking both personally and politically.

It might help to consider what Eris might have actually been doing when she rolled the golden apple. To see her intervention not as a form of revenge, but as a way of bringing to the surface the very non-godly qualities of jealousy, greed, vanity from those who imagined they were ‘beyond all that.’ There is another story, perhaps, to this day being played out. Let’s say Eris has the Longview, could see the Phrygians (aka ‘trojans’) splitting up, one group heading west to establish Paris, the others absorbed into the Scythian lineages near Anatolia. If she knew that the Dark Mothers needed to stay North, and the Scythian queens would soon seed another spiritual lineage, she might well have been doing something *very* conscious with the instigations of her little golden ball.

To continue to see Eris as “out” of something is a curious choice. She may be representing a certain ‘awayness’ to those who struggle to remain within their conventions. But she may be more transcendent than alienated, and her gestures have a different meaning thereby.

Off I go to sit with this Moon. I’ll return next week.

    Love and more,

    M

  3. Levelling. Balance? Like Pluto and Charon? It’s all hanging in the balance?

As the basketball player hangs in the air, arms stretched, ball in hand, we gasp and there is the split second of balance with body fully engaged before the ball leaves the hand. The ballet dancer fully elongated suspends in perfect balance in the air a split second before the body comes back to the earth.

  4. calling sara, no, no, no. Your voice hits my ears like poetry. It delights and excites. It was the Eris thing and I had just read a byline about the palin on the yahoo main page before I hit the planet waves.

The press doesn’t let her alone is right. She was screaming out in agony again. She did not get to Washington (the party). Everybody is so mean to me she cries. On that day she was screaming Caroline gets special treatment cuz she has class. “Nobody loves me. Everybody hates me. I’m gonna eat some worms.” Her run was painful for me. It wasn’t so much her lack of governmental experience. It was all that other all too familiar stuff that kept smacking me upside the head. She has issues to work through yet. We can’t very well have her crying everytime some foreign dignitary doesn’t give her approval. And we can’t have our country represented by her inner brat issues.

I would maybe have believed her “finger pointing at the press”, if Hillary had not been beaten up so badly for so many years and was still standing. And let’s face it, if McCain had picked a more solid republican woman, we might not be in obama land but lulled back to sleep by the old order. Palin has alot of shutpah and that is a beautiful thing, it just needs to season a little yet. Her party and the press is working her issues in full view of the world. It’s kinduv like showing your naked ass to the world.

Sorry about the misunderstanding. But hey, you confronted it. That’s a good thing.

  5. mystes,

  6. Hey Sara, for what it’s worth, I imagine that V.’s reference was to some other Sarah in her world. I thought I remembered one of her relatives named with the H.

For all of the messages about ‘uniting’ and ‘becoming one’ that seem to flow around these aspects, I still see Eris and her process as clearing things out of the way for one’s metier –the thing you are born to do– to appear.

So creative chaos, yes. Leveling? >shrug< not so sure about that.

    Your thoughts?

    M

  7. Victoria,

Sarah is sounding off again?….is that referring to me, and if so, what are you trying to say with that remark?

    Interesting choice…

    Sara (minus the H)

  8. Dame Koehler,

It is a poem penned by one J. Denosky, a very prescient dude who’s been webbing along since about 2003. I nudged his writings about Green Man/Dark Man over to Genevieve a couple of weeks ago. He’s a savant, might be a little more.

What *is* clear is that he has a bead on Vajrayogini. VY’s most famous advocate was the woman who took on the Tibetan religious establishment in the 11th century. Her birthdate was July 6, 1055. (Ahem.) I am pointing this out again because I am honestly fed up to my earwings with hearing about ‘insecure’ Cancerians.

The VY puissance is undergoing a major shift – and is being womanumitted from the religious ghetto. Eris hasn’t even warmed up yet…

  9. mystes . . wow. . where does this come from; I love it. Especially “I do not wear bones b/c of death. I wear them b/c they represent what is beneath the surface . . . .”

These words (all of ’em) make her seem more akin to Pluto than the Trojan horse story would imply. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Sara asks:
“Do you have a tonic version of these teachings?”

He does, actually, and it involves licking mirrors clean. Meanwhile the version of Eris I work with is the one who says:

    “I will give freedom,
    but not without realization
Those who have been bound, bind others
Those who have suffered, cause suffering
I let them know how they have been affected
But also how they have affected others.

“I do not wear bones because of death
I wear them because they represent what is beneath the surface
The blood that I drink is the evil karma of those that I save
And the karma is then halted and does not pass to others
I appear wrathful as I take on anger, hatred, fury, and the desire to destroy
    Which are destroyed within me.

“I am a dancer upon the pain of all mankind
I destroy the dark and corrupt
    My compassionate side is hidden
But for those whom I love
Who have taken on my dark grace
I open a path of shining light
With pain and sorrow left behind.”

She isn’t just –as the Jungians among like to say– an вЂ?archetype.’ I’ve been doing retreat with this one since the early 90s, but her big Reveal was when she showed up in my meditation and thumped me on the Eye when one of her (and my) Consorts was hit by a car a couple of years ago. Trauma Queen, indeed. She’s not Kali, but she signs Kali’s paychecks.

She’s the Real Deal, babes. And her mandala? A six-pointed star.

    Ride em, stargirls…

  11. sara, you have put a powerful intention out there. But you come from a good place so let her rip. You are far braver than I. I usually stick an “easily” in my intentions. Have fun drinking.

  12. be, sarah is sounding off again. Still a little upset she isn’t at the party? She does raise some issues though.

  13. news flash: local area woman reports teen age daughter in state of confusion. Daughter asks why does everyone suddenly like their parents. She gets weird match. Fellow parental units are suspicious and asking what are these kids up to.

My answer to her: don’t look at gifted horse in the mouth. Is that a good answer?

  14. Sara asks:
“Do you have a tonic version of these teachings?”

He does, actually, and it involves licking mirrors clean. Meanwhile the version of Eris who is my direct mentor is this one: http://www.buddhanature.com/buddha/vajrayogini.html

  15. sara,

I like what you are saying about understand the info on Eris and letting it unravel that inner chaos instead of holding on (controlling) too tightly. I’ve only heard the one story about her and how she disrupted a party, was ticked off because she wasn’t invited and started a big war. It is true that one act of misbehaviour can ruin a here-to-for great reputation (some famous politicians come to mind). But surely this goddess has some positive qualities going for her and shouldn’t be judged solely on her overly sensitive feelings.

I’m hoping that this nudge from Varuna and the Full Moon will bring her more welcomed powers to light (consciousness) and “make sense of who we are in (these) troubled and chaotic times”, even if it exposes who we are (as individuals and as nations) as less than flattering. Call it growth. Call it equalizing. Call it peace and love.

  16. I value reading about Eris here very much.
The information about Eris here (even without me knowing much about astrology, but enjoying taking its teachings and wisdom in for nurturing) reminds me to think of the chaos or struggle within as a creative force, and to let it unravel a bit in freedom with a smile, instead of holding on too tightly.

Also, the message (regarding Varuna) that “the indescribable inner chaos we are facing is precisely what unites and in a sense equalizes us.”

I want to drink this message in until it becomes a part of my conscience and replaces older fear based belief systems within me.

Do you have a tonic version of these teachings?

    thank you,
    S

  17. I do not want to leave the airwaves stuck on a symptom and I’m getting ready to head out.

I think the equalizing does come in the chaos and confusion. Oh crap, the mad scientist owner of the last company I worked for was right? All these books he touted on chaos while the war raged on with the employees. How amusing we must have looked to him. No wonder he rarely came out of his cave. However his door was always open, if one dared to enter his lab. Suddenly I feel comfort in the mess of my desk. As long as I can find my tools. His mess drove his assistant nuts.

Ovid comes to mind. Creation. Order out of chaos and all that. I am experiencing people getting some really good true hits and shaping a new lives (there are some awesome manifester’s out there.) I am sure I am no different. We are all intermingling and by doing so better finding ourselves in the comfort of what the other is. I think that is what I had to find with my parents. Acceptance in what we shared. A confirmation of sorts.

Maybe I am so in awe of people, because I am slow on the physical manifestation thing. Could be a first house saturn thing. I never thought the mess of chaos could be so much fun. Mr Pee Body was right there all along in his messy cave. I just didn’t slow down enough to notice him. Too busy keeping things orderly and running on schedule.
