This week’s horoscopes look at both Mars square Saturn and Jupiter trine Saturn, which are big points of reference and reckoning in their cycles. The horoscopes also look ahead to the opportunities that come with next week’s New Moon in Virgo on September 10.

Today is horoscope 1,617. Detailed readings for your Sun, Moon and Rising Sign.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — The only answer to your confusion is to prioritize. This includes the way you make up your schedule; time is crucial right now. Yet it’s far more important to understand the basis for your choices. You will feel lost until you reduce your values to two or three coherent ideas that become the guiding principles by which you make decisions. Somewhere you have the idea that this will happen automatically, but there are too many conflicting influences in your environment for that to be possible. You are experiencing true commitment to yourself when you know why you want or need to do something — and this is the thing most people run from. In terms of relationship, the basis must be what works mutually and nothing else.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — You frequently struggle with internal pressure that you don’t understand. Sometimes you think you’ve figured it out, then it sneaks up on you. Chiron’s presence in your birth sign the past few months has given you some relief, and offers a clue as to what the problem is. Relief has come as enhanced experience of embodiment. If your emotions don’t resonate for you physically, you can feel detached or untethered. That is disembodiment. When your body gets into the flow of your thoughts and desires, then you feel like you’re connected to the ground. In that stage, your mind is not running out of control. Chiron is about to retrograde out of your sign for the next six months or so, returning on April 14. Notice how your experience differs and if you get lost, guide yourself back to yourself.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — There is no need to make a spontaneous decision despite any pressure you may feel over the next day or two. If you plunge into or out of something you cannot reverse, you will likely feel regrets. Part of the illusion you’re in is an either-or situation. In fact you have many options and shades of possibility. Some of the best possibilities are the ones that are the least obvious. They are off to the side, only to be found in places where you encounter them by seeming accident or chance. Your solar chart is an exercise in what happens when you keep an open mind and slip out of your established routines. You cannot really ‘expect the unexpected’ but you can be open to it when it shows up for you.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — The current strong emphasis on Virgo means you will have many workable, high-quality ideas over the next week or so leading into the New Moon. This is the time to keep a notebook and pen handy and use them like a dream catcher. Most people don’t bother with this; they don’t value their ideas enough. They may not need them and they may not have any. But you do have ideas and you can put them to productive use — if you remember. So don’t worry if people think you’re a dweeb for writing things down (and as a creative advisor, I strongly suggest your ‘phone’ is not the right place for them — paper is). So buy one of those tiny little notebooks and dust off a pen and put them to immediate use.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — What has changed for you over the past three weeks? I mean in the three weeks since the Aug. 12 total solar eclipse in your sign. What has shifted momentum? What has come into your life, and what has departed? What is increasing and what is decreasing? Take careful note of these things; that implies being extra observant of your experiences, relationships and flow of feelings. With the approaching New Moon on Sept. 10, you will have the opportunity to make alterations to your trajectory as well as help certain patterns settle more deeply. Yet to do this you must be conscious of the trends of your existence and make conscious choices of what you want and do not want. The key words are priorities and emphasis.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The Sun and Mercury are making their way through your territory, which is likely giving birth to a lot of words. Yet you know you’re really thinking when you get to that place where you cannot express yourself — and then decide you have to. In our time, this requires courage — but only enough to make a modest effort and stick to it for a moment. And not judge the seeming results. Right now, writing and thought are not about the end product but rather about the experience of being with yourself and translating your perceptions. For some this feels like stepping into the water without being able to swim. For you, the experience is more likely to be a familiar experience of conscious self-awareness. And this is not about where you go with it — it’s about where you are right now.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — What is the true nature of your fear? These days, it may be about the chaos of the world encroaching into your world. You prefer to live an orderly existence, with enough predictability to allow for experimentation and indulgence in pleasure. That you’re willing to do the work is a given; you only worry about unreasonable responsibility and usually you handle even that just fine. But it’s toxic chaos that irritates you: that born of deception, greed and meanness. If you have to stand up to it, do so gently and remember the beauty of life. At your best you’re the flower that cracks through the stone. And that never happens by brute force. It happens through awareness, persistence and making deliberate choices to be better than the prevailing state of society.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Exposure to digital technology is acting like a solvent on the delicate emotional quality that you possess. Others may not be noticing; you definitely are. But you may not know what your feelings and senses are telling you. You may be experiencing the world growing more shallow and people’s emotional bandwidth becoming more narrow. While this partly depends on who you know and where you live, I’m describing something global; something in the vibe of the planet at this time. The feeling is an extreme reticence to take risks with one’s vulnerability; being repulsed even by the idea of connecting with others. This goes beyond wise prudence into extreme defensiveness — the cat that won’t come out from behind the bookshelf. You don’t want to participate — and you don’t have to. Just pretend not to notice being the odd person out.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — There is an easy quality to your solar chart that I suggest you be a little cautious about. The aspect is Jupiter trine Saturn, in your fellow fire signs Leo and Aries. This aspect represents the flow of experience and a welcome absence of boundaries; and it can also signify unhelpful decisions that will be difficult to get out of. You must bring some resistance to your thought process. There may be seemingly easy paths to success, though the question then becomes one of the longterm outcomes and costs. That means projecting into the future and considering several different scenarios. While I am not suggesting you should throw away a good thing, I am suggesting you check whether it is in fact beneficial. Due diligence is essential — as is knowing what you really and truly want.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Your situation with your family, its history and its emotional imprinting, is ultimately a spiritual one. It’s not about psychology; it’s about existence. And in the end, you claim your place in space and time and make it your own — or you do not. Along the way, there are obstacles to overcome, though how you do that depends upon how you perceive them. It is true that certain facts of your past limit your freedom. Yet they can have no impact on the places where you figure out that you’re actually at liberty to do what you want and be who you are. The question then goes to: do you exercise that liberty? And if you don’t, what holds you back? This is where the spiritual matters enter; the place where you have the option to connect to your deeper source of renewal, or keep drawing from the shallow and the stagnant.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — This week and next, I want to focus on Pluto, the slow, deep and meaningful anti planet that has been working its way into Aquarius since 2023/2024. Pluto is moving further from the Sun and taking considerably longer to go through a sign; its time in Aquarius is about 19 years. So this represents a long, meticulous process for you; and this blends personal transformation with adapting to what has become an extremely strange global environment. Pluto’s presence is not strictly personal and it’s not just about living under digital conditions; it’s about the frontier where the two meet. It’s about how you’re conditioned by forces much larger than yourself, which are usually invisible and unacknowledged. You have to be something of a Jedi master to notice what is happening to you and also to make sure that along the way, you are gathering knowledge and energy that you then put to productive use.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — The planets are holding up several different mirrors, and you must learn from all of them. You also have the option to choose the one that you know is true. How you define true is going to be up to you. Is it the way that others see you, or is it the way you see yourself? Or is it something you aspire to in humanity and in the world? I suggest you consider all of the above, and keep an open mind and flexible point of view. It remains true that there are certain people who play highly specific roles in your life, rather than people who play general roles. This may be a point of frustration for you; you want focus and to limit your exposure to the current madness. The best way to do that is going to be one person at a time, one situation at a time, and one experience at a time.
