STARCAST for May 12 :: Total Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio
Dear Friend and Reader:
Today’s horoscope is based on a diversity of astrological developments. Here are a few of the details.
Most significantly, the approaching Full Moon in Scorpio is a total eclipse. It happens overnight Sunday to Monday (just past midnight EDT Monday), and will be visible across the Americas (and from some points in Europe and Africa) wherever the sky is clear.
Quite a bit has happened since the April 30 Taurus solar eclipse conjunct Albion (1992 QB1).
Mercury has stationed retrograde in its domicile Gemini (that lasts through June 3). That placement suggests there’s so much that we do not say, and need to. In Gemini, the retrograde has an especially introspective quality, and evokes the idea of an idioglossia, the secret language of twins.
Jupiter has entered Aries, starting a new 12-year cycle. Earth-Goddess Ceres has entered the sign of mothers and of women generally, Cancer. It is also in aspect to the Aries Point, which emphasizes how this placement contains many ideas that resound through society.
Because Cancer’s ruling body, the Moon, is eclipsed, there will be many references back to this Ceres placement and its diversity of concepts: relationships between mothers and daughters; the relationship between food and emotional reality; and food generally.

Weekly horoscope for May 12, 2022 by Eric Francis
There is something more significant going on right now: Venus is currently forming a conjunction to Chiron. This distinctly sexual aspect is happening concurrently with a total eclipse of the Moon in Scorpio, the house of sexual secrets.
Aries (March 20-April 19) — Jupiter has arrived in your sign, which can have many potential effects. Once when Jupiter crossed my ascendant, I won two jackpots in Reno in one day. The key was, I saw this coming and knew innately not to play until after I had returned from Burning Man, not before. Jupiter will enlarge whatever it touches, and responds well to readiness and preparation. So let’s leave Jupiter in the background for now. There is something more significant going on right now: Venus is currently forming a conjunction to Chiron. This distinctly sexual aspect is happening concurrently with a total eclipse of the Moon in Scorpio, the house of sexual secrets. And on the rare occasion of a total eclipse, that translates to secrets revealed. The combination of factors is urging you to be especially direct and honest with people you consider intimate, and those in whom you are interested. The chances are that any withholds (things you have not said) are going to come out one way or another. You are in a far stronger position overall if you take control of the process and disclose your reality on your own terms. This includes the full spectrum of possibilities, including disclosing attractions that may not be “appropriate” but are certainly genuine. Be bold and be real.
Taurus does not usually like change. I’ve had lots of you in my life, and I know you prefer to stay put and stay in the same relationship.
Taurus (April 19-May 20) — It can be harrowing to experience an eclipse in your opposite sign (involving relationships), particularly of the Moon — a planet closely associated with your sign. However, herein lies the clue. Whatever is happening is more likely about you than it is about someone else. See through the charade of existence and recognize that your whole life is about you. However, where a relationship is concerned, it is your own growth process that initiates the changes. The sign and house placement are the context; the Moon is about you. (For technical reference, as the planet exalted in Taurus, it is one of your most important significators. The little crescent above the circle in your sign glyph is the horns of the bull, and also depicts the Moon.) Taurus does not usually like change. I’ve had lots of you in my life, and I know you prefer to stay put and stay in the same relationship. Yet reality forever changes, at least for those of us on the time ride. If you allow change, you will be facilitating your growth process rather than resisting it. You may be inclined to deny just how profound this moment is for you, as the big event — your ruling planet Venus conjunct Chiron — is happening in an angle of your chart you may be the least inclined to notice, yet where it can have the most profound effects. Now you have everything that I can reasonably tell you, speaking as an astrologer; you know the rest.
Try to figure out what you do not know. Be especially alert to things you think you know, but which are not correct, or not founded on some basis in factual reality.
Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Mercury just stationed retrograde in your sign, and has a long way to go before it turns to direct motion. A lot is happening, and you may be tempted to make big decisions based on what you are witnessing, and what you think you know. I strongly suggest putting everything on a one-month delay. We’ve all seen this lots of times — at the end of Mercury retrograde we are in totally different circumstances, and wish we made better decisions. This is not about magic. It’s about what you discover. The very essence of Mercury stations is what comes out; what is revealed; what you discover. Mercury moving backwards both through your sign and soon, through your 12th house Taurus, is saying: there is plenty you’re about to discover. Therefore, I suggest you take the slow approach to decisions, and the novelist’s approach to life. Or, borrowing a bit from someone I don’t like much, but still value this idea: identify the known unknowns, and be on the alert for the unknown unknowns. Try to figure out what you do not know. Be especially alert to things you think you know, but which are not correct, or not founded on some basis in factual reality. This can call for an easy-to-acquire courage, known as being willing to be wrong. Thinking you’re right when you are not always leads to problems, and this is a much better alternative.
Your public life will grow increasingly interesting as Jupiter takes hold at the very top of your chart. Remember to fuel and fund the visible elements of your existence by living a life worthy of the word.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Lunar eclipses mean more for you than they do for nearly anyone else, and one is about to happen. Your sign is ruled by the Moon, and eclipses represent major shifts and turning points. These can come on fairly suddenly, though you’re probably aware that various transitions are in motion. This one takes place in your 5th house, which says, at minimum, that you need to have more fun. So as you get opportunities to redesign your life, remember that. Your life these days is, in many ways, defined by your responsibilities, commitments and living up to your reputation. Scorpio, the scene of the eclipse, has a serious tone in contrast to the playful nature of the 5th house. It’s also a fixed sign, so things tend to stay the same for so long, you expect them to be that way. And because Mars is the ruler of Scorpio, to make changes, you have to be determined and driven. Your public life will grow increasingly interesting as Jupiter takes hold at the very top of your chart. Remember to fuel and fund the visible elements of your existence by living a life worthy of the word. That means making having a good time a priority.
I know supposedly poor people who are content and live their lives well, oblivious to the threats that surround others. Safety, belonging and a closely related factor — meaning — are about a state of the emotions, and a state of mind.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — If you know anyone in the world who feels safe, you might ask them why, and how, they got to be that way. I know wealthy people who cannot muster up any sense of belonging or confidence. I know supposedly poor people who are content and live their lives well, oblivious to the threats that surround others. Safety, belonging and a closely related factor — meaning — are about a state of the emotions, and a state of mind. Externals can help; a roof that does not leak is a real benefit, but who ever thinks of that? Who is grateful for a refrigerator that keeps food cold? Who is in love with clean laundry? The struggle humanity faces, exploited by all who would lord over us, is the struggle with mortality. This is perhaps the most powerful of all taboos, the more so because it is used as a tool to keep all who are susceptible in a state of panic. This is not mitigated by intelligence, and only barely touched by experience. There is something else, including a willingness to settle into the basic truth of your existence, and to be at peace with what is so. With love and a prayer, may the eclipse bring you that gift.
Your at times perfect rationality can give way to bouts of emotional overwhelm and chaos, which stripping you of your ability to hold yourself together.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Yours is the sign of the pristine mind that can be seized by its emotions. Your at times perfect rationality can give way to bouts of emotional overwhelm and chaos, which stripping you of your ability to hold yourself together. I don’t think you like this; it’s something you have to live with. And you know what a truly brilliant person you are when your mind is engaged. The lunar eclipse in Scorpio will help you see through this tendency. Something is driving it, something emotional and judgmental. Something a little mean, or more than a little, yet you cannot pinpoint its origins within yourself. Consider that it is a kind of inheritance. It’s something that’s been conveyed to you either through your genetic line or through some other version of karma. You don’t need to change this thing about yourself; you merely need to notice honestly. This is the difficult part for most people: the noticing, but also, disengaging the urgency to fix. Rather, be with yourself, and practice compassion and forgiveness: toward yourself above all else. You are every bit as good and honest a person as you think, though everyone has a shadow. But not everyone admits it — and therein lies the challenge.
Multiple factors are describing a moment where you can take responsibility for how you feel about yourself and how you assess your value.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Much profit and gain by evil actors has its roots in people feeling badly about themselves: lacking self-respect, wanting for selflove, and existing in a constant, manufactured struggle to find it. Think of all the influences that are designed to tear down the nascent buds of fulfillment, of contentment and self-awareness. Multiple factors are describing a moment where you can take responsibility for how you feel about yourself and how you assess your value. You can afford to be honest with yourself about this; you can grow in any direction that you determine is necessary, as long as you are the one making the decisions. That you may perceive others judging you, or encouraging you, may provide a source of information from your environment. Someone may even hand you a key that helps you unlock the truth about yourself. Yet whether you recognize or use that key is your choice. You would be the one turning the tumblers, turning the knob and pushing the door open. The bottom line of the Scorpio eclipse is making your own decisions about yourself — perhaps decisions that have been lingering for a long time. Few people actually get to this threshold and willingly pass through; few people ever realize their self-worth comes from within themselves.
You only need to be honest with yourself, though this seems to be the greatest challenge in the whole course of humanity: the Holy Grail, the Golden Fleece and the Ark of the Covenant all in one. Honesty with yourself is so compelling that the next step is to be real with everyone else.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You may have recognized that there’s something central to your life that is not working. If this discovery is sincere, you will also figure out that you don’t need to change much. You only need to be honest with yourself, though this seems to be the greatest challenge in the whole course of humanity: the Holy Grail, the Golden Fleece and the Ark of the Covenant all in one. Honesty with yourself is so compelling that the next step is to be real with everyone else. This is why so many people would prefer not to. Yet then if one is fortunate, or perhaps stricken, there is a moment when the truth emerges and there is nothing you or anyone can do about it. It is easier than you may think, and after all, we are in the time of Revelation. So: Be revealed. Now, along any self-restriction on what you feel comes quite a bit of holding back that which you want to create; and your imagination; and your sexual desires and instincts. Part of where Scorpio gets its erotic power from is the placement of Pisces on your 5th house, and this angle of your chart looks like a supernova about to go off. Please don’t waste your time thinking you may be judged. Really. Who fucking cares?
Usually this manifests as fear, which you may only notice like the obnoxious leaf blower that is suddenly turned off.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — There is a theme running through my interpretations of the eclipse: many of the signs have something big happening in their 5th house. This is the angle associated with fun, games, gambling, risky adventures, sex and art. Sagittarius now has the biggest thing of all in this house: your ruling planet Jupiter, which entered Aries earlier this week. At the same time, Venus, the planet of love and beauty, and Chiron, the planet of healing, are forming a conjunction — just hours before the total eclipse of the Moon in Scorpio. So there are many forms of emphasis on the 5th, which is saying, stay focused on yourself and what you want to create. You are probably already doing some of your best work. Stay close to the pleasure of creating. As for the eclipse, it takes place in your already cryptical 12th house, with many layers of mystery added to by the darkening of the Moon in Scorpio. Think of this as letting off some intense psychic pressure that has been building over the years. Usually this manifests as fear, which you may only notice like the obnoxious leaf blower that is suddenly turned off. Remember that in expressing the 5th, the thing that makes it real is the risk that you take; the thing you dare to do; what you dare to create; who you dare to love.
Your ultimate motive is that it’s simply useless, and you are a practical person. You are not the type to leave a wheelbarrow in your living room, or to keep a pet rhinoceros.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — You’ve probably long since given up caring what other people think about how you live and what you think. Or you wish you could. Your ultimate motive is that it’s simply useless, and you are a practical person. You are not the type to leave a wheelbarrow in your living room, or to keep a pet rhinoceros. It’s on that level. And the real joke for all those who think people think so much is that they don’t have time, the inclination or the bandwidth to give a toss. When they claim to, it’s merely a drama, mostly for the sake of distracting themselves from their own lives. The net result of all of this, particularly lately, is that you’re way ahead of the curve. Not being bound by an urgent need to conform means you can think what you think, unfettered by “public opinion.” That is the source of all accuracy. Or as the late, great Daily News columnist Jimmy Breslin said, “When you see a crowd, go the other way.” This eclipse offers you an opening, if you want to connect to the wisdom of doing exactly that. Yet the other side of this is not being attached to being right. In fact, stick to being willing to be wrong. That is the source of much wisdom.
A square aspect says “internal integration.” If I may offer my theory: initially, the psyche exists in parts, most of which are either disowned, or not fully extant in awareness. So what happens is, they get projected onto others.
Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — The forthcoming lunar eclipse makes a 90-degree angle to Saturn — your ruling planet in your sign. A square aspect says “internal integration.” If I may offer my theory: initially, the psyche exists in parts, most of which are either disowned, or not fully extant in awareness. So what happens is, they get projected onto others. An easy example is a man who has not integrated his feminine side will tend to seek it in women, and see it as not part of himself. Or, many people who do not integrate their parental parts will experience these things as entities taking power over them, such as governments and corporations. This is what it means to “deal with your parents” or to take ownership of their influences, and what you think they think about you. This makes it easier, not more difficult, to address the problems involved. Most of what you struggle with is not your own. It does not actually come from you. This is particularly true of what seems to involve your parents. Yet it’s impossible to see as long as you project them outward in any form. The forthcoming Scorpio eclipse is giving you the opportunity to move a raft of karma, though you must recognize it as your own before you can hand it back to where it came from.
If you have wholesome self-respect, you can do a lot with a little. If you do not, you might do nothing with vast resources.
Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — With Jupiter now in your 2nd house Aries, you may benefit from some knowledge about how that house works at its best. It is the intersection of cashflow and self-esteem. In classical astrology, the 2nd is about your available resources, usually movable: your wallet, your tools, your talents and skills, and whatever contemporary form that “the cow who gives you milk” might take. In psychological astrology, the 2nd represents how how you feel about yourself. There is a connection between the two, which might be revealed in whether you recognize your own talents and abilities; whether you care enough to develop these things; how you present yourself and your work; and whether you feel you have something to offer your neighbors and the wider world. If you have wholesome self-respect, you can do a lot with a little. If you do not, you might do nothing with vast resources. Your ruling planet Jupiter, now in Aries for the first time in more than a decade, is offering you many resources and possibilities. Yet the mediating factor is whether you possess the respect for yourself to create something with them. The total eclipse of the Moon in Scorpio is a comment on how you perceive your own potential. Clue: think on a much larger scale than you usually do.
