November Monthly Readings by Sign and Rising Sign: Deep in the Heart of Retrograde Planets

Dear Friend and Reader:
We’re in the deep part of both Mercury and Venus retrograde. Old problems may be coming up for solution; be patient and work them out. Mercury is retrograde in Scorpio, while we’re now in the Libra phase of Venus retrograde.
In these readings, I’ve done my best to guide you through this turbulent astrology, making it difficult to tell one thing from another. So don’t make any final determinations until well after the current pattern blows over toward the end of the month.
Issues of Scale, and a Narcotic Quality
There are issues of scale (what’s really significant?) and also a narcotic quality, especially as we head into the U.S. midterm election. The world is like a dream where nearly everyone is sleepwalking and hardly anyone can tell.
It’s confusing enough to have both Mercury and Venus retrograde at the same time. Both are aligned with unusual, ultra-long-standing patterns. Mercury is backing through what I’ve been calling the torrent of propaganda alignment; but how would anyone even notice?
We live in the state of mind where everything is fake except what you want to be true. So choose carefully. (Technical note, the alignment is Neptune and Borasisi in Aries; 135 degrees from Mercury and special point Poseidon in Scorpio. We will be living with this for a long time — though fast-moving Mercury in the pattern is just temporary emphasis.)
The Venus Piece
This is more interesting. Venus has retrograded back into Libra, where it’s now aligned with another ultra-slow-moving pattern involving Chiron, Eris and the special point Zeus. This describes the struggle for orientation within your senses and your body. Eris-Zeus is the electrifying power of digital chaos. Chiron has been in this pattern for two years, trying to get our attention.
Most people respond by saying, “Hey Chat, how should I raise my children?” This is like confusing the smell of dry cleaning fluid with fresh air.
If you notice occasionally that something is a little off, I again leave you with the words of Eric McLuhan, the bold text is mine:

Aries (March 20-April 19) — You may feel dominant over your personal destiny, your identity and other affairs of life, though you still have accountability for your words and deeds. Truth is of the essence, though it never seems to be real or available in the deception-based digital environment. Still, it’s a real thing, especially in your most intimate relationships, and within your own awareness. Who you are is not a figment cast in bits, bytes, and pixels. You cannot change the underlying truth of your existence by the story you tell about yourself. I realize some would disagree and say that story has the power to recreate reality — and this is worth considering. Everyone is subject to their beliefs, especially about themselves. Positive thinking has power and to some extent we weave the tale of our lives. It’s possible to tell a new story about your existence. I’m suggesting that you do something more challenging: be true to yourself. This implies discovering the places where you were not, or are not, being true to yourself, and working out what is true and honest. Mars is about to make a conjunction to Jupiter in your fellow fire sign Leo, and that may have you feeling invincible. Consider that sincerity is what you want, and also vulnerability. These translate to being honest about yourself, your needs and your desires, setting aside any sense of entitlement. Collaboration and negotiation count for quite a bit right now.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Both Mercury and Venus changing to direct motion in deeply sensitive angles of your solar chart insist that you maintain a dialog with the people around you. This is not your speciality, I know. You tend to view life from a fixed position that makes it difficult to see, hear and feel the viewpoints of others. This may feel like personal integrity, though it almost always works against you. Slowly you learn that you’re stronger for your ability to understand others, and stronger for your flexibility. The environment of most relationships is dominated by propaganda, by which I mean one-sided concepts that are intended to get an effect. It is this very thing that you want to be free of. In such a state, no true connection is possible. The underlying question is: do you want intimacy and sharing? If you don’t, then it will work for a while if you maintain a position of one-sided ‘truth’. If you do, you will serve your situation well to let down your guard, listen with open ears and speak from an open heart. There are likely to be ‘withholds’ on both sides of your relationships. Your part in the healing process is to say what you have not said or revealed about yourself. This will entail a loss of control, because you have nearly no influence over how others respond. But you do have influence over how you respond, which you often give up in place of an intense reaction you can’t seem to control. Now is the time to turn that around.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — You will benefit from being more creative in affairs of the heart, and more daring in matters of creative expression. They are closely related. If relationships suffer from one thing today, it’s a lack of courage and an overabundance of expectation. For the young, they are treated like a cross between Venmo transactions and the IMDB database of starlets. For most older people, the air is thin and difficult to breathe. Society focuses on the young, and the young are focused on their phones and feeds. This creates a problem that seems to have no solution. But we might define the problem so that it may be solved. I think that under our current torrential digital conditions — which were pretty good before “the phone,” “social media” and “artificial intelligence” — we are obsessed with pathos and lack passion. There is an extreme aversion to risk. I keep hearing people say that my mother was irresponsible for letting me go out to play without a drone or GPS tracking my every move. This attitude extends to adults in their social interactions. Everyone could be a con artist, a stalker or the one who steals your partner. Gemini’s astrology for November and beyond is saying: get over yourself. Take a risk. Get to know someone. Do something you consider daring. Find your paints or the pastels, or dig out the baking supplies. And please, call someone up and invite them over. This used to be easy for you; it used to be a way of life.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Do everything in your power to shift the emphasis from money to the quality of your work and your reputation. The money part has enough momentum right now. If you focus on it to the exclusion of other things, it will only be a distraction. There are far more important places to shift your awareness and your attention, and one of them is being known for your accomplishments. It’s necessary to realize the ways that the digital environment has turned the whole matter of reputation into a blender. People with limited knowledge and credibility can suddenly find themselves at the seeming top of their field because they can game the Instagram algorithm. One rumor can take down a person’s career, especially if malicious and motivated. So it can all seem hopeless. And you do have reason to be confused — but not hopeless. Saturn is making its way across the bold midheaven angle of your solar chart. This is the house of praxis — of action — and also for establishing your reputation. Saturn is about building foundations. Therefore, keep building, starting with the lowest part of the structure you want to inhabit. Persist in establishing yourself, and be clear to yourself and to others what you want to be known for. Then there is the part about stagecraft. With Neptune so powerfully present in this same angle, you want to utilize its powers of visual presentation. Life is a big theater right now, and all theater utilizes the power of illusion. Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — For as bold as you can be under some circumstances, you’re reticent to speak up when emotional or familial matters are concerned. It’s as if you have an unconscious instinct to guard every feeling as a deep secret. There was some condition of your early childhood that imparted the message that being honest or transparent was dangerous and self-defeating. This led you to study the motives of the people around you, far earlier than the age that most children even have a concept of what a motive is. But these things don’t translate well into adulthood. They don’t translate well into the need to be honest and open as a fact of maturity. And your taciturn quality is well-masked by the fiery and outgoing nature of Leo; one might not notice what you’re not saying. Or what you might have said in three words that nobody else realized the importance of. The message of your solar chart can be summed up in one word: overshare. Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Cosmic or perhaps inner spiritual forces have been working with all their might to get you out of a fixed point of view. In one sense, this is a self-image thing. I know I’ve said this before somewhere, but it’s as if you’re looking at yourself the wrong way through binoculars. You seem small and distant to yourself, but this is purely an illusion. In another sense, it’s about exercising a kind of self-control or self-authority that is paralyzing you from taking action. And it’s the drive for action that’s the thing intended to set you free from your distorted self-perception. You have a lot of other help available, though you also have a trust problem: you can’t bring yourself to do it. Any trust you offer seems like you’ll be in a position to be taken advantage of. Okay, and what if that’s true? What do you think you’re doing on Earth? Is your whole purpose self-serving? That has nothing to do with Virgo on a good day, but when you’re in reaction everything can become all about you quickly and totally. If you look back over your life, that’s never worked out. Nor has the idea of “going it alone.” Any time you have ever accomplished something, you have collaborators, often important ones who can do things that you cannot do. But this odd blind spot you’re trying to get rid of has prevented you from remembering this. Nobody goes it alone in this life. We all need help and we are all here to help. Work it out.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — Your ruling planet Venus returns to direct motion this month, right here in her ‘domicile’ Libra — that is, your Sun or rising sign. This is a moment of personal alignment for you; of finding your true orientation. But there will be some twists and turns along the way as you get your bearings. There is a corridor through late Libra, where Venus currently is running retrograde, and it involves three potent slow-moving points: Chiron, Eris and the special point Zeus. This puts Venus (who represents you) in a kind of hot seat. Zeus is about directed energy. Chiron is integration and healing. Eris represents the total effects of the digital environment: an aggressive, disembodied form of chaos. And now Venus is here for an extended visit; what is this about? I have a clear picture which may not be clear to anyone else, but I’ll give it a try. This is about you finding yourself — your real self, and sense of existence — amidst the overbearing conditions of the digital environment. The situation is so bad most people don’t notice it. Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — We are now in the thick of the Mercury retrograde process, taking place exclusively in Scorpio. Planets “are what they are,” meaning that Mercury is always about mind and communication. But for you, it represents several specific topics associated with shared financial transactions. Mercury rules Gemini, your 8th place, which is about joint finances in personal relationships. The retrograde process in your sign represents a reassessment of the attitudes and values you have about these relationships. A discussion is called for, perhaps several, so that you can cast off your illusions and get on the same page as those you depend on and who depend on you. Second is that Mercury represents the financial gains from your profession, ruled by Virgo and your 11th place. Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — One way or another, you’re going to need to adapt to the environment you’re in. It seems that much of your energy is going into an outdated personal agenda, which is the equivalent of intentionally not making the adjustments you need to make to the world we are in. Whether you like it or not, we now live on a planet where nearly everyone is the product of the technology they use, without a clue as to what is happening, why or how. You are proceeding as if you have two primary options: dig in and hold onto the past, or go large and dream a future in your own bubble that somehow transcends everything you’re seeing going on in the world around you. They have two things in common: they are not about participating. They are about isolating. Major activity in your 7th house of relationships and your environment will keep trying to get your attention. This will feel like intrusion and disruption until you identify the factors in play and dance with them. This is an active process, not a thing you wait to happen. With Uranus in Gemini, waiting is not an option (and never a good idea). And doing other things, tuning out, going in another direction than your immediate situation, is a form of waiting known as delay. It is easy to think that your life is about you; that certainly is the propaganda of the total environment. Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Venus moving to direct motion in Libra later this month is saying you need a plan for action, and then you must act on it. I’m noticing something in the world that I find disturbing: passivity bordering on paralysis. This disguises itself as being overwhelmed, confused or sick of it all, but really it’s about the lack of taking action on matters that we all know require action. They may be in your own seemingly private life, and they may relate to events you see developing in the world around you. It’s easy to watch and observe. It’s easy to feather your nest. It’s easy to go into survival mode. It’s more difficult to ask yourself: what part of this is mine, and what can I do? What is the appropriate action I can take at this time in world history? If you’re wondering what world history has to do with you, why are you so worried? Why are you so concerned about the foundations of your security? These are not personal concerns; they are an indicator of how you’re responding to an all-encompassing situation that is also encompassing you. So, back to your plan. A measure of efficiency is required; when you do things you like to be effective, and have assurance that you’re being so. Your plan must have specific goals and also be flexible and adaptable to a quickly changing situation. And more than anything, think beyond your immediate home and family environment and place yourself in the wider world. You tend toward pessimism even on a good day; get past that.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — If you’ve avoided being pushed to make an important decision, hopefully it’s because you made that decision of your own accord. You’re in a vitally important time for seizing hold of your destiny. The power of decision is your one remaining freedom as a seeming prisoner of this world. That’s why everything around you attempts to persuade you to do things other than what you want, or what you know is right. There would seem to be a controversy around those two possibilities: desire, and right action. New Age gurus are all about selling you manifesting what you want. What I am calling correct action is often confused with a sense of obligation and is not associated with innate knowing. But think about how often desire has betrayed you. Consider how many times you knew what was right, did something else, and lived to regret your decision — when you knew in advance! And the truth is, you still possess that same skill of foreknowledge — and you can use it. Meanwhile, a spiritual crisis seems to be developing, though it has a specific theme. And that is the importance of your relationships as a spiritual path. Most people associate ashrams, incense-laced bookstores, crystal shops and workshops with the concept of spiritual. This is not true for you; your growth priority is about relationships, and this is especially true now with Venus turning to direct motion in your fellow air sign Libra. Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You exist in a time of heightened personal potential. This is financial as well as relational, on the most intimate level. Your state of coexistence with the universe is directly involved. But wait, coexistence with the universe? Yes…that not small but usually ignored matter of what you’re doing here, and where you are, how you got here and how you feel about it. To sum up: there is a reason why nearly all religions (I am being polite by adding ‘nearly’) seek to diminish and destroy people starting with their sexual awareness. Once that is broken, you’re left with the husk of a former human subject to every form of state and corporate control. Your connection to your sexual instincts is your connection to existence. Not everything is specifically sexual, but your ability to navigate the human environment, and to hold your center, is the direct product of your ability to experience what Wilhelm Reich called ‘orgone’ and what other cultures call chi, prana, shakti, ruah and many other words that say the same thing. But nearly all the time is the connection to sexuality, desire and orgasm omitted. Reich and certain tantric traditions keep it intact, but you have to be in the inner sanctum to get that information. Or, you can tune into your senses; be aware of the information coming from your body; and listen to the wisdom of your creative wellspring. We live in a time of total exterior chaos that is infiltrating the mind and body of nearly everyone. There remains one coherent source of instruction and awareness that exists within your mind that may not feel at all like ‘sex’ but is one and the same with it.
