Sept. 11 Anniversary: Astrology and Anthropology

Dear Friend and Reader:

This is a horoscope off-week. The next horoscope will be published ahead of the Full Moon on Thursday, Sept. 16. My focus for the week is a review of the 20 years since Sept. 11, 2001 — and we are still living with the injuries and crisis created by that situation. See our resource area here.

“Apparently, protecting our way of life has become our way of life.” Editorial cartoons at the time of Sept. 11, 2001 made many comments about the culture of fear that was taking over the world. We forget that 9/11 included an anthrax scare, with people terrified of this substance coming in with the mail.

I will have this coverage in a special edition of Planet Waves FM on Friday night, my last before pausing for a break to complete METAMORPHOSIS. For current astrology, please check the STARCAST podcast.

You may be aware that the Sept. 11 incident and the Covid incident are part of the same astrological cycle. Sept. 11 happened under the influence of Saturn opposite Pluto of summer 2001 (which had last occurred in 1965-1966). Covid happened under the influence of Saturn conjunct Pluto (which last occurred in 1982). Whenever these planets get together, there is the same basic effect: a huge emergency and then some reactionary movement to follow.

Here is how Richard Tarnas described the Saturn-Pluto cycle in his 2006 book Cosmos and Psyche. A quadrature alignment is a conjunction, square or opposition. These aspects are used because they come with the most noticeable effects of any cycle: the ones that stand out and apart; the ones that tend to reveal the cycle for what it is.

“The successive quadrature alignments of the Saturn-Pluto cycle coincided with especially challenging historical periods marked by a pervasive quality of intense contraction: eras of international crisis and conflict, empowerment of reactionary forces and totalitarian impulses, organized violence and oppression, all sometimes marked by lasting traumatic effects.”

An Atmosphere of Gravity and Tension

He continues, “An atmosphere of gravity and tension tended to accompany these three-to-four-year periods, as did a widespread sense of epochal closure: ‘the end of an era’, ‘the end of innocence’, the destruction of an earlier mode of life that in retrospect may seem to have been marked by widespread indulgence, decadence, naivete, denial and inflation.”

Tarnas writes that Saturn-Pluto aspects come with a “widespread sense that one’s life was determined and constrained by large impersonal forces of many kinds — historical, political, military, social, economic, judicial, biological, elemental, instinctual — too powerful and dominant to be affected by the individual self. This sense of vulnerability was in turn regularly matched by a drive for power, control and domination.”

Further, “Experiences of deep humiliation caused by violence, violation and defeat were thus often accompanied by a compensatory need to prove one’s steely strength, invulnerability and capacity to retaliate with lethal potency.”

And somewhat more reassuringly, he adds: “Saturn-Pluto alignment periods are also characterized by displays of personal and collective determination, unbending will, courage and sacrifice, by intensely focused, silent, strenuous effort in the face of danger and death; by a deepening capacity for moral discernment born from experience and suffering; and by the transformation and forging of enduring structures, whether material, political or psychological.”

No matter how many photos of the Pentagon you look at, you will not see any evidence of airplane wreckage. We might also wonder how the building collapses outward when it was said to have been struck by an airplane traveling at hundreds of miles per hour. This is an official Defense Department photo. With apologies, I have lost track of the name of the Army sergeant who created the image.

Planet Waves was On the Story

Planet Waves has documented this incident since its first days. On Sept. 11, 2001, Planet Waves published dioxin and asbestos warnings for New Yorkers on our front page — topics that were considered irrelevant at the time, and which are now part of the lingering toxic legacy of that scenario. The “pile” at Ground Zero released inconceivable amounts of both substances. Asbestos was a primary building material in the towers, and all that plastic and PVC provided fodder for the creation of dioxins.

In my first analysis of the chart, posted on Sept. 14, 2001, I warned that there was a relationship between the terrorists and the government, and that the identity of the accused enemy would change — both turned out to be true. First Afghanistan was blamed, and a war was started; then Iraq was blamed, and another war was started.

Another cartoon from the early post-9/11 era, commenting on the anthrax scare. People were told to buy plastic sheeting and duct tape and seal themselves into their homes.

Over the years, I have done my usual leave no stone unturned routine. I still have my collection of airplane crash photo books that I used to size up the crime scenes. I remember my conversation with Steve Inskeep of NPR, my reporting colleague from the New York State Capitol Press Corps in the early 1990s (where he was then assigned) and among the very first reporters on-scene at the Pentagon after the explosion: an eyewitness interview.

Many Articles and Broadcasts

Over the years I have written about 20 articles examining the details of the issue. Some of them are preserved in this resource area. My only regret is not having been bolder about what I saw in the chart initially; it was all there, though like most people, I was terrified to speak up — one of a very few times in my investigative reporting career when that happened.

The only complaint I ever got was when I posted this April Fool’s Day edition claiming that Dick Cheney took credit for the event after his heart replacement surgery. People were angry that it was not true. Betty Dodson didn’t talk to me for a month. I got so many calls, I had to take my cell phone number off of the internet for a while. I prefer to be available to my readers and the wider public.

In the first days, I became aware of this article by a retired Special Forces master sergeant, and teacher of military science at West Point. The author analyzes elements of the official story from the stand point of what is plausible and what is possible, from a military point of view: for example, how much training does it take to pilot a jet airliner? What maneuvers are they capable of?

As for the Astrology

My analysis of the chart is based on classical horary astrology. For that, we would temporarily set aside the opposition of Saturn and Pluto (the latter being a modern planet).

I can do the chart using just the seven planets of antiquity, as they plot out the events. Some may recall that the Flight 11 chart has Mercury rising; it is also conjunct an asteroid named for one of the most renowned flight engineers in American history, Carl G. Sauer.

I will be making my presentation this week on a special edition of Planet Waves FM dedicated to the issue. I will focus mostly on the psychology of the event. I will discuss the Truth Movement that built up around the incident, and I will read the astrology of both Flight 11 hitting Tower 1 and WTC 7 falling down later that afternoon. I will discuss my point of entry into the investigation, which was discovering this photo of the Pentagon in March 2002.

I will be back with you Friday evening.

Thank you for reading and stay in touch.

Faithfully,
