About My Horoscopes

We are in strange and intense times — characterized mostly by chaos and deception. It’s fair to ask “why do we need astrology?” My best answer is that it’s a way to see patterns and make some sense out of not just strange events, but also to get a better look at your possibilities. I’m here to bring the world a little closer into your reach and take the edge off of the fear.

I see my role as an astrologer as providing reassurance, and also seeing what cannot be easily seen from our limited viewpoints. This is about working with archetypes, cycles and patterns, and it takes practice to see them. I’ve been writing my horoscope for nearly 30 years, starting in the spring of 1995 — my anniversary is May 1. In all, I’ve written about 2,000 of these columns, which means about 24,000 individual entries. And it’s still fun and exciting to do.

I stand in the tradition of the British horoscope column (and have written for the Mail and the Mirror, as well as the New York Daily News). I was called to the work in the early 1990s by Patric Walker, who demonstrated that astrology is real. Over the years I have developed my own approach. Each entry for each sign is a little world of its own. I challenge the standard notions of what the signs are about, defining them my own way (which I advance every year when writing the annual edition).

I use about 50 different planets, centaurs, asteroids, Pluto-like objects and special points, and weave the story of our lives from my understanding of the charts for the current week and the current season.

Here is the story of how I got into the work.

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Current conditions are calling for more emotional maturity than is considered normal in our society. Yet what do you do with the emotional tension or frustration that you may be feeling? Well, a mature approach would be to feel it rather than to dramatize it in some way. And if you’re going to be expressive, a martial arts class is better than arguing with a loved one. It could be that ordinary exercise will help, though the theme of the moment is mastering the energy of Mars, which is the root of the concept “martial.” The primary thing to be aware of and avoid is taking your anger or resentment out on yourself. If you are feeling guilty it is a sure sign you need to express your feelings and your emotions — though words will not suffice. You must get your body into the experience in a way that does no harm.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — Venus is moving into position for its forthcoming retrograde (March 1 through April 12). This whole event is like a crystal ball which will help you identify your inner resources and put them to work — and provide you with timely alerts about the ways in which your life is changing. You are about to be given an inner view of elements of yourself and your awareness that are difficult to access. And in that, you will make many inner discoveries. In order to find the gems, you will also need to accept certain things you may not want to know. I suggest you do this with curiosity and humility; you will only benefit from what you learn, no matter what category it may seem to fall into. Skipping ahead to the end of this experience: You have a lot to offer, and only will gain by doing so. You cannot “save yourself for yourself.” Forget it.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — Your solar chart is describing some question or issue about generosity. Are you holding back in some way, whether from yourself or from others? This could be about anything from withholding feelings, to some expression of your personal truth, or your priorities. It could also be about your resources. All of the above may be involved. If I had to take a wild guess, there is something you want that you’re not talking about. That desire may even feel like an emotional need, and it’s a need you’re unlikely to be expressing. The question is, what are you afraid of? Desires are powerful, especially when articulated. They are both an internal commitment and also a statement to those in your environment. Let’s stick to the first, though: do you recognize what I’m talking about? Are you aware of and willing to commit yourself to something you know is important to you? That is the place to start. Be real with yourself.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — It seems like Mars retrograde has gone on forever, but it’s just been two months. What was the marker you passed this week, as Mars formed a square to Chiron? This is the energy you use to take care of something you’re not interested in or entirely willing to do, but which you know is necessary. This comes with the parallel reminder to be flexible, especially in your feelings. Mars retrograde in your sign comes with the reminder (a gem from Holistic Therapy) that the opposite of depression is expression. There is a strange paralysis that seems to be gripping society these days, where expressing oneself comes with the feeling of abject terror. Yet since this is so rarely tested, it is not often disproved. You might give it a try and see what happens. You can afford to give people more of yourself. People close to you are interested in how you feel, because they care about you.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — You may find that close partners are more willing than usual to have a deep conversation, but only if you are. I suggest speaking with people one-on-one, so that you can avoid group dynamics. That means no emails with multiple recipients; honor everyone for their individual role and place in your world. There is also an accountability factor. The reason why five perfectly nice people can become one serious douchebag of a group is because responsibility is deflected. While I am not suggesting you have to pin anyone down on an issue, you do have your concerns that you want addressed. And others may have concerns that they want addressed. This must come in some form other than a showdown. Keep the transaction friendly, and try not to think in terms of the worst possible outcomes but rather of the best. Everyone has something to gain in this scenario.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — The recent entry of Venus into Aries may be encouraging you to wake up to the reality of your existence. Despite many pokes, prods and revelations, you still seem a little sleepy on this matter. Though we may agree that sometimes it’s appealing to forget yourself and fall asleep in the arms of another. Yet many developments through the foreseeable future — say, the next year or so — are insisting that you remain awake and alert in your relationships and not allow yourself to drift off into dreams. If you need more independence from a relationship, that is a matter to take up with your partner. The usual method in our society is to blow up the situation, throw down or act as if your choices don’t affect anyone other than yourself. Yet you know that they do, and you know it’s high time you learn how to work out mutually agreeable situations. This is much easier if you’re honest with yourself about who you are and what you want.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — The ongoing square of Mars and Chiron has been agonizing for many people. It is a difficult aspect, and it usually lasts for a few days or a week and now it’s been standing in place for months. Retrograde Mars is in Cancer, your 10th and the house related to your ability to act decisively; Chiron is in Aries, your 7th and the house that describes some alienation. The struggle is about inhabiting your relationship to existence. The struggle is existential (about everything), not topical (about something specific). Think of this square as a resource; it will be in place nice and strong through late March. The effort you put into resolving difficult issues now will be worth ten times the price in April. You have leverage, deep insight into your situation, and you are sensitive to aggravating factors. Do the work now. That will involve working the Mars side, then the Chiron side, then the Mars side, until you pull them into focus.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — Scorpio planet Mars is nearing the end of its long retrograde phase, which began in early December. There are two layers to this transit, which spans from Leo to Cancer and back to Leo. The end result is that you take some bold action related to your professional activities. The underlying question involves on what basis you would choose to do so. You may be getting the message that if your motivation is financial, you’re not going to be happy. Money can be part of the scenario, though there are two factors. First, you must sincerely care about what you would be doing. It’s easy to bribe this part of your mind with privileges not related to the work itself, which must be its own reward. Second, check whether you’re intimidated by the possibility of your own success. New responsibilities will be involved, and you must be willing to do the work — now and in the future.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Jupiter has returned to direct motion over the past few days, and you may be learning more about someone than you were expecting. The net result may be that you decide the situation is absolutely right or absolutely wrong, contrary to some previous ideas that you may have had. It’s unlikely to shake out as either one of these possibilities, though there is another factor: what you allow yourself to take on board, to acknowledge and admit about others. It may be your unusual optimism that wants to see the best in people; it may be that they have something you want, so you overlook what you do not like. Eventually, though, one of you figures out how you really feel, and so one interpretation of Jupiter going direct may be someone making an observation about you. Is it accurate? Are you always honest about how you present yourself to others? We shall find out.

Capricorn Astrology Studio 2024-25 is now available.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — What you say and what you write matter. Your habits of thought create the environment in which you live — which is largely a mental environment. In my reading of the concept of ‘Capricorn’, your greatest challenge is discerning what is fantasy, what is intuition, and what is supported by reliable sensory information. In the end, if you think you know something and you lack personal sensory data, you may not know it — no matter how convinced you are. I suggest you set an extremely high standard for what you think is true, and a sensitive trigger for what must go in the ‘uncertain’ column in your personal ledger. This distinction is the essence of taking responsibility for your thoughts and your decisions. Whenever you are ‘convinced’ of something, that’s the time to pause and reflect. Principles are one thing; convictions are another. Most of what you think of as truth is really your interpretation.

Aquarius Astrology Studio 2025-26 has been released, preview available.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — You simply must take care of yourself, whatever that means to you. There are mental elements to this, as well as physical and emotional. I’m not suggesting you follow the advice of every YouTube ad telling you what not to eat, but rather that you do what you know you need to do — for yourself. This would best be accomplished one thing at a time. Step one would be removing any artificial pressure you have yourself under, to accomplish anything, to get all your work done. Your emotional stress may be associated with a sense of failure. You’re not concerned with real and present issues, but rather with your concept of the past. Also, if you believe that you’re not supposed to be an emotional person and are trying to control everything with your rational mind, give yourself a break. Let yourself feel.

Pisces Astrology Studio 2025-26 is now available for pre-order.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — You might have the sense that something is bothering you but you don’t know what it is. It is more likely that you have already taken the evasive action you needed to, though if you have not, the sooner you act on any known problem the better. Yet your present concerns seem to be reaching into the potential and the imaginary. Your solar chart suggests a remedy, which is getting yourself into an expressive state of mind and emotion. Notice the influences designed primarily to hold down your feelings and your creative freedom. Small moves will mean a lot: find your sketch pad and your pencils. Dust off your diary, the old-fashioned kind, on paper. Tune up your guitar or ukulele. And give yourself one — just one — opportunity to express your sexuality in a way that is interesting and creative. You will feel better.
