Planet Waves Weekly for May 2, 2024 by Eric Francis

Aries (March 20-April 19) — Orient your psychic state around what you think people think of you and you’ll discover a formula for misery. State that in a succinct and original way, you can get a patent and make a lot of money. However, you’ve got something much better going on, which is a formula for true contentment. There are two facets: one is living with uncertainty, and the other is trusting yourself in the midst of movement and rapid change. You might think that self-trust is about believing everything you think. (That’s better for forming a cult.) Trusting yourself is like surfing or riding a skateboard: a constant, and verging on unconscious, process of adjusting your balance from instant to instant. Drift off and you can wash out; disconnect from your senses and you’ll wind up on the ground or in the water. Stay connected to yourself and you’ll discover how beautiful and how valuable you and your ideas are. To that end, one good question is worth far more than a thousand flimsy answers.

Taurus (April 19-May 20) — To find out how much of what shapes your character is an external idea imposed upon you, you’ll need to become something of a rebel. That merely means doing what you want because it’s what you want to do. Experimenting with small choices will teach you a lot: doing something interesting after work instead of going right home, or leaving the house early and meeting up with someone before your scheduled day gets started. These experiments can include feeling what you feel instead of stuffing it. You will know you’re succeeding when you get to the guilt barrier: that thorny, internal zone where you get caught in emotional brambles or barbed wire. You can turn back, or you can get the machete or bolt cutter out, chop and clip your way through, and find out what’s on the other side. Anyone who impregnated your mind with such a boundary didn’t want you to go in there, but it’s the only way to discover what you need to know.

Gemini (May 20-June 21) — The Earth is moving within you. You may feel like you’re about to burst, or have a quake. It would be helpful to let some of that energy out, even though you may feel you’re going to cause a calamity or two if you do. You will not, if you can avoid starting ridiculous arguments with cops, the IRS or your boss. Though you may not consider yourself an artist, what you’re experiencing is the rapid expansion of your creative vision. You express this as a form of rebellion — against whatever constraints seem to hold you; against your expectations of yourself; and as a challenge to how boring life can be if you try to live in the same world that everyone else does. No need to worry there — you live in your own cosmos most of the time, though now more than ever. And the theme of your galaxy these days is the understanding that you’re about to undergo a rapid flourishing, a transformation into a new form, unlike anything you’ve experienced any time recently. The weeks before that happens can be uncomfortable. You may be filled with uncertainty. Keep breathing.

Cancer (June 21-July 22) — Keep up with the details of your life and you will feel a lot better — and you’ll have a smoother ride. Your astrology is bursting with ambition and aspiration right now, though there is a yellow light flashing around the idea of ‘success at all costs.’ You have plenty of go-energy. You have plenty of drive and push. Some of that may conceal an underlying insecurity, and if you stay in touch with that, you will be a lot happier. Please slow down your decision-making process, and pay attention to what you got wrong the last time around. Resolve to learn from the so-recent past and the more distant past as well. On that note, it’s always a good exercise to sort out the difference between a need and a want. Both have their place. Both have their purpose. Yet confusing the two is risky business. Sorting them out on a daily basis will teach you a lot.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) — Over the next few days, you may need to confront some of your worst fears, which might manifest as if they are real. This is not so much an illusion as it is a test of the possibilities and how you respond to them. And it will be your opportunity to sort out what is real from what is not. It’s true that the world is a scary place. And it’s also true that one must learn how to handle that in a way that does not exude fear, or succumbing with your mind to the worst possibilities before they are real. I’m describing a Mars-Neptune contact in a sensitive area of your chart, where you’re prone to your imagination flaring up on the best of days. These aspects have a tendency to self-destructive thought and conduct. Keep your mind clear. Through the weekend and into next week, avoid what alters your mood, your judgment or your perception. Then you’ll be able to discern what is real from what is not.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) — Life is way too short to live with a concept of yourself as a wounded person. Yes, circumstances have hurt you, and some of those injuries have struck to the core of how you feel about yourself. And this can create an extremely powerful ideation of your self-concept: an identity. While it may seem difficult to shake the effects of the past, you might find it helpful to identify the ways in which holding onto the past, and past struggle, serves an agenda that you probably don’t want. Your sense of righteous wounding will usually serve as the greatest obstacle between you and aspiring to the life you want, merely because you want it. The core fixation of your guilt complex is on the privilege of wanting. Any time you desire, and your psyche responds with guilt, consider that you’ve found the control mechanism. It may be encased in something else; it may be hidden, but it’s right there. And it came from somewhere — most likely an external factor, long ago.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) — With Mars in your opposite sign, you may feel like you have to fend off advances, or respond to your circumstances competitively. You might try a different approach: let whatever influence that (and much else coming in from Aries) represents pass through you. Rather than specifically resisting, reacting, or even responding, try observing. Imagine that nobody can speak for you, or even speak about you; they can only speak for themselves. Consider that there is no “you” in the life of anyone outside of you — they can only describe what they think is real, for themselves alone. This is a continued thought experiment in what you’re conscious of and why. Conclusions are unnecessary and will be distracting; your observations will teach you about yourself. The line between subject and object is arbitrary. The division between you and the world you live in is a moving, flexible boundary, and you have the privilege of experimenting with different angles of seeing and listening.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) — You don’t need to be territorial about your work; you merely need to do it well. There’s nobody to compete with except your personal best. To take a competitive approach is to invoke a diversity of ego issues that distract you from the task at hand, and which also take away from your mastery of your craft. Yet that may be the nature of any such drive. Is it insecurity? Are you unsure whether you’re really good at what you do, and therefore have to make it into a game? Please — get some confidence in your talents and your abilities. You have absolutely nobody to impress; you only need a loving relationship to what you do every day. If you don’t quite have that, you might try shifting your approach, or doing something you’re in love with. You will know that’s true because you’d do it even if you were not paid.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) — Many of the people in your life relate to the world from the place of their wounding. This seems to be flaring up now; keep a tally of the people who come at you with the comportment of an injured child. And use their behavior as a measure of your own: do you do anything like this? Do you find this approach helpful? You have an option right now: to turn any past injury into a source of strength and creative power. This does not happen by magic. It happens through the use of consciousness. Without writing a book in a horoscope column, your chart is saying one thing boldly: You want experience. Direct experience. In the world. With some risks involved. With the thrill of creating circumstances that you grow from as a fully voluntary act. Your soul is (among other things) calling out for the very human immersion in sexual experience, and for this, there is no substitute.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) — Let yourself be motivated by love, not anger. Even if you’re angry, allow the love of justice or of humanity to drive you rather than resentment at how unfair the world is. You seem to be struggling with an old form of insecurity you thought you’d shaken many times. To me this looks like the false lack of confidence: not having confidence where you really ought to. There’s only one remedy for that, which is direct experience. Slowly you figure out you really have the courage to dare. After a while, you can look back and realize you do have the self-assurance you need, and even if you don’t feel that way, you will determine by logic that you must have had it all along after all. It would amount to the same thing, though there is a certain pleasure in trusting your ability to stand up to the challenges of life. There is pleasure in knowing you’re up to the game, whether you win or lose.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) — Your home is very important to you, whether it’s a luxury apartment, a country estate, your basic four walls, or a cardboard box. The more time and energy you invest in taking care of where you live, the happier you will be. Do it up a little; put some creativity into improving your living space every day. Have a talk with yourself about whether you’re in the right place — the right physical structure, and the right locale. Despite your need for earthy grounding and creature comforts, you have a way of detaching yourself from this priority. Stay connected; experience the benefits of self-care by way of your living space. Define your boundaries. Make sure the locks on your doors work. Restoring order to chaotic places counts for a lot: there is a special kind of despair associated with clutter, as with unfinished home improvement projects. Small moves will mean a lot.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20) — Remember how much of life comes down to the stories we tell ourselves, and the use of narrative to make something real. This factor of the mind seems to be inevitable. Reality as the personality conceives of it is what we can place into a structured flow of events. This is always a blend of fact and fiction; the question is whether it’s helpful to ourselves and others. Tell yourself happy, creative, interesting stories. Place your life into a context that is meaningful for you. That word, context, means to join together; to weave; to fabricate. This sounds a lot like dharma: acting as if to hold the world together. You don’t have to actually hold the whole world, but rather, see yourself as part of it, connected to others, and treat those connections gently. If there is a break or a fray, take the time to do the necessary mending. If you let every interchange especially commercial transactions  be loving and meaningful, you will be more content, and spread that feeling.
