Students sit along the curb of Bastille traffic circle. Behind them is the city's monument to the French Revolution. However, the monument is located about a kilometer north of the former location of the fortress/prison, which dates to the 14th century and was demolished shortly after the Revolution in 1789. A few of the original stones have been left behind, in a little park near a bridge from the right bank to Ile St Louis.
