High school students occupying Bastille traffic circle in their mostly peaceful protest against budget cuts and curriculum changes, with one waving a black flag -- which presumably means 'we don't surrender'. The traffic circle is the main route in and out of the city, and a major traffic hub within the city, connecting downtown Paris with suburbs to the east. Traffic was blocked for more than hour and the protest seemed to attract a fair amount of television coverage, which is how you get the message to the public.
