Happy Saturday morning to you. I want to thank you again for responding to our subscription drive. We are on the way to meeting our goal, set late last week, of $25,000, for the problem-solving, bill-paying and rainy day fund. With finances off of my mind, I get more bandwidth to devote to your astrology.

We need good astrology now. In the right hands, it's a useful tool.

It may even be an essential tool. The world is in a frantic state and people are feeling it. There are many sources of news; there are not so many sources of help. We are here to help.

Every time I sit down to write, to broadcast or to do an audio reading for you, I ask myself: how can I best explain this in an engaging and informative way?

When I show you the world, I want to show you your place in the world. I can do that because I know my place in the world, and I'm a born explorer.

Astrology as currently practiced most places is barely accessible to people with even a good education. Most astrology writers depend heavily on jargon rather than telling the story of what the planets say and how it relates to your life. It's easy to sound like you know a lot and then not say very much that people grasp.

The concept of Planet Waves is to offer you something you can use, something that sees through the haze and the illusion, and gets to the essence of the story -- in an intelligent way. As I do this, I gently introduce you to the words and concepts of astrology. My guide rule is: describe the astrology when it's the best way to convey an idea; otherwise, use another metaphor.

What we get is something fun and understandable: a story that moves. A book where you want to turn the pages. When someone says, "I can read and understand what you write," I consider that the highest compliment.

That I come from a journalism background is the operative fact here: an effective journalist wants to be understood. We want the story to be interesting, by adding the right details, and ferreting out the hidden facts. Journalism is the perfect writing form for astrology.

There's one other concept of accessibility: making the work available. In the past, astrology came in three flavors, generic (35 million free websites), cheap prepared readings, and expensive custom readings.

One thing about Planet Waves is that the "free" stuff is great -- Planet Waves FM, Planet Waves TV, and some excellent astrologers joining me on our blog, for several distinct points of view. You -- our subscribers and customers -- make this possible by doing business with us. This is the model we began with in 1998, and have developed steadily since. I love what we’ve accomplished on a small budget, with the love of our readers and the passion of our staff.

I prepare written and audio readings, by sign and rising sign, that many people say are better than the professional natal reading they just paid $300 for. The readings I craft are a breakthrough for the astrology profession.

They are on the level of good therapy. While I'm technically not a therapist, I've made it my business get enough training to be one. And I've learned most of what I know from my clients.

Then, using the techniques I learned from studying horoscope master Patric Walker, with some help from the minor planets, I developed a way to do extended readings using just transits. How do I do it? How does Mark Knopfler play guitar like that? Practice, practice, practice; and following through on good ideas.
