On Valentine's Day, I was eagerly waiting for the White House press briefing to begin. It was delayed several times, hour by hour, and finally the 4 pm scheduled event was canceled.
That day's press briefing would have focused on a newly revealed debacle in the White House, which started as the revelation that Rob Porter, a top staff member accused of beating two of his wives, had been denied security clearance, but was still handling the president's most highly classified documents.

The White House was claiming that the security clearance process was still in motion, though the FBI director, a Trump appointee, said in a congressional hearing earlier that week that the security clearance report had been turned over last July.
Security clearance is an elaborate, detailed (but routine) character check, going back to one's teenage years, to make sure that people who work at the top levels of governments are qualified to be handling the nation's most sensitive secrets -- such as the names of American spies working in the Kremlin, pending military plans and anti-terrorist strategies.
This has been turned into a scandal over the White House hiring a wife-beater (who according to press reports was also involved romantically with Hope Hicks, one of the president's closest advisors), and the president's position on domestic violence (he's opposed, thank goodness).

What are your thoughts about how your more intimate partnerships and friendships exist within a wider community? How you describe yourself, what you emphasize, and what you believe, all reveal your feelings about your existence. In particular, choose your words carefully, because they will have a way of sticking to you and becoming true. There is no such thing as a problem without a solution, and whether you see that depends entirely on your state of mind. You share a birthday with Katharine Cornell, LeVar Burton, and Christopher Eccleston.
Aries (March 20-April 19) -- It took the poet Bob Dylan to write, "If you try to be anyone but yourself, you will fail." What he did not say is that if you are boldly and unapologetically yourself, you will succeed in ways you never could have planned for. Put the real you right out front for everyone to see, hear and feel.
Taurus (April 19-May 20) -- You don't often like to be vulnerable in public, though you will find great strength in doing so. You don't need to project an image, or to veil your true feelings. Connect your facial expression to your emotional state, and your words to your sincerest thoughts. That can move mountains.
Gemini (May 20-June 21) -- You won't be able to hide what you feel. Where relationships (particularly work and family) are concerned, that leaves you with a few options. One is to be transparent and explain yourself; the other is to say that you're working on something deep, and ask for some space to do that.
Cancer (June 21-July 22) -- You know the truth is all that matters, though currently, this is not an especially popular idea. That makes it all the more meaningful. Take what you hear today with a pinch of salt, and give it a few days before you decide whether it's credible or not. Delay taking action till you know for sure.
Leo (July 22-Aug. 23) -- Make sure you only do what you really want to do. Don't let anyone push you into something against your better judgments or your subtle intuition. What is right will feel that way, and what is wrong will come with a little warning that tugs on your sleeve. The difference matters.
Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22) -- Everyone has a past, and you must not be too picky when scrutinizing others about minor details of their history. The real question is: how does someone treat you, in the moment and as tracked over the long run? This, you can only learn from experience, though that's a voluntary act.
Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23) -- Yours is one of the signs whose motto is "the brain is the best sex organ." You want those who can express ideas in a way that you find intelligent and funny. Though be sure that's not a hedge against expressing one's deeper emotions in a sincere and honest way. You need both.
Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22) -- Even the most casual sex can take you deep into an emotional experience. Most people today would do anything to avoid the depth and reality of who another person is; or, for that matter, of who you are. Welcome and embrace any opportunity to go beneath the glossy surface of life.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22) -- Your mind and your emotions may seem to be sending you two entirely different messages today. Though if that's the case, it's likely to be an interpretation error. By Sunday you'll see that you were getting one message. Pause long enough to think about it and that'll make sense right now.
Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20) -- You may be keenly aware that every word written or spoken is actually a form of fiction.
