<\/dt>\nOf course, there’s a lot more than Mercury going on with the astrology now. Venus’ Leo conjunction with Jupiter yesterday was not exactly shallow.<\/p>\n
Similarly, what dreams may have come with the now-separating opposition from Mercury to Neptune in Pisces were probably not of the garden variety.<\/p>\n
Then there’s preemptive Mars possibly showing its hand already while on the way to merge with Saturn in Scorpio next Monday, only hours after the Sun and Moon meet anew (as in “a New Moon”) on Virgo’s doorstep.<\/p>\n
Yes, the astrology is busy right now, and so probably are you. Whether it’s back to school, back to work or back against the wall, however, Mercury is making sense of it all with the message that perseverance will further both your best interests, and those of everybody else.<\/p>\n
Like Mercury’s trine from the Moon when it first entered Virgo, Mercury’s aspect\u00a0to Pluto on Thursday will be an earth trine. That should be comforting. The problem is Pluto’s undeserved reputation.<\/p>\n

Perhaps it’s the name. Besides those who may still recall a broadly animated dog, most connect the name Pluto with a mythical character. Dark Lord of the dead. Unrelenting emperor in the only realm assured of unlimited growth. Intransigent kidnapper of Persephone. Scary guy. Scary stuff.<\/p>\n
Yet, the Pluto of myth has been transcended as regards to astrology. Since its discovery in 1930, observations and correlations of astrologers worldwide have revealed a more sophisticated and layered interpretation of this evidently binary (with Charon)\u00a0Kuiper Belt object formerly known as a planet.<\/p>\n
An association with Scorpio and the eighth house has evolved. Though informally arrived at and without universal consensus, Pluto’s designation as co-ruler of Scorpio (along with Mars) does make some sense. Pluto does, in practice, correspond with Scorpio’s\u00a0facts of life that are often hidden away as if they were scary — cellular metamorphosis, mortality, shared resources and (dare we say the word?) sex.<\/p>\n
More recently, Pluto’s long orbital periodicity (taking nearly 250 years to go through all the signs) has implied a connection with history, evolution, geologic transformation and other processes that are obscured by passages of time longer than a single life.<\/p>\n
Then, of course, there is Jeff Green who influenced our modern take on Pluto<\/a> as much or more than any other astrologer when he fingered the former planet as astrology’s corollary to the pan-cultural postulate of a soul’s continuation from one lifetime to the next.<\/p>\n Who knows? As the New Horizons spacecraft gets closer to the Pluto-Charon system, the information from an up-close look<\/a> may provide yet more grist for astrology’s mill.<\/p>\n Nevertheless, as it stands now, the terms ‘persistence’ and ‘perseverance’ work pretty well to connect all of astrology’s interpretations of Pluto. From the mythical character’s persistent refusal to release any who find their way unto his realm, to Scorpio’s fixed quality, to the slow grind of continental plates, evolution, even unto the fundamental nature of life itself, whatever keeps on keeping on as a defining characteristic relates to Pluto.<\/p>\n That’s how the deservedly comforting earth trine from Mercury to Pluto on Thursday can be your grounded connection with how (to quote a famous bit of motion picture dialog) “life finds a way<\/a>.”<\/p>\n That’s how you can take your own place in the cosmic scheme of things once again. You can do your part to persevere through whatever has you challenged right now so as to manifest Mercury’s trine to Pluto through your own life.<\/p>\n Even more importantly, you can manifest Pluto and its connections to life itself as more fecund than fearful. Prove that the unimaginably improbable experience of living is something to be embraced more than feared. If you can embrace being such a example during these fearful times, you could very possibly serve to save a life.
