Glancing at the calendar for the New Year 2014 from the perspective of the Mayan calendar, there are a few metaphors we can gather about the character of the year ahead of us.<\/p>\n

January 1, 2014, on the Mayan tzolkin calendar is 3 Ajmac (‘Cib’ in Yucatec Maya). Ajmac means Owl or Vulture, two wise birds.<\/p>\n

Owls are messengers from the Underworld. This means we can expect many messages from deep within our collective subconscious. Thankfully, Ajmac is also a great musical day; it is a perfect time for finding harmony and rhythm. Add the number three and we’ve got ourselves a great Waltz! <\/p>\n

Owls can be a great day ‘to sit on a rock’ and meditate. This may be more of a walking ‘zazen’ meditation for 2014 since we have the number three activating our wisdom. The 52-day segments of the tzolkin may feel like great movements of a symphony as we progress through the seasons and tzolkin rounds.<\/p>\n

The current tzolkin round ends on 13 Ahau, September 2, 2014. This will feel really good; the new era we began on December 21, 2012, will be truly dawning for the world.<\/p>\n

So some things we may see being brought to reconciliation are science merging with spirituality and technology reconciling with living in harmony with nature. Our government needs to balance keeping us safe with respecting our right to privacy. America needs to open its eyes to domestic surveillance and why it is incompatible with freedom. There have been two rulings on the NSA’s activities with very polarized results that could push the matter to the Supreme Court in 2014. I reckon the courts will be wildly busy this year. The real issue seems to be that there are secret government programs with little to no accountability to any of our elected officials and this should scare the bejesus out of us all.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

People desperately trying to maintain the status quo will be in for some big shocks this year. Acceptance of gay marriage and legalization of marijuana (I predict many more states opting for full legalization this year) are both major victories for civil rights. America is a bigger melting pot than ever and we need to loosen up the constraints around our borders and know that everyone is human and deserves the same rights and respect inside our borders and beyond them no matter who it is. Each individual of the 7 billion of us on this planet deserves to live a good quality of life wherever or whoever they may be.<\/p>\n

On a deeper, more historical and cultural level it is time for Native Americans and aboriginals on every continent to have their traditional lands returned to them. I will be covering this through the year.<\/p>\n
