Among this week\u2019s central events is a square between Vesta in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn, exact today at 8:54 pm EST. This is Vesta engaging with the Uranus-Pluto square (Vesta opposed Uranus on Friday), bringing a sense of purpose to the upheaval we\u2019re witnessing in the world around us (and the world within us).<\/p>\n

It may be no coincidence that Nelson Mandela\u2019s death and our collective celebration of his life accompanied this astrology, and that his memorial service is today.<\/p>\n

While squares (a 90-degree angle between planets) are generally thought of as internally felt tension that must be resolved through action, Eric has pointed out that squares can also be about the integration of the themes represented by the planets involved. <\/p>\n

In this case, we get the progress of Pluto and the total devotion of Vesta. As we know, Mandela was absolutely devoted to his cause of ending apartheid — tackling institutional racism and poverty as a young activist; then while a prisoner; and finally when released from prison, as the president of South Africa and then continuing as a statesman. <\/p>\n

His life also illustrates the \u2018sacrifice\u2019 aspect of Vesta, having sacrificed his freedom for 27 years. In his famous four-hour speech opening the defense\u2019s proceedings at his Rivonia trial in 1964, Mandela stated, \u201cI have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.\u201d <\/p>\n

Thankfully, he was able to live many decades for his ideal and actually achieve tremendous change though his devoted service to progress for all citizens in his country. Certainly racism has not died out entirely in South Africa, but neither is it the official law of the land. <\/p>\n

So what are you devoted to? Perhaps not to the extent of being willing to die for it; but what are you willing to live for, in terms of making genuine, foundational, systemic progress within your life and in the world around you?<\/p>\n

Those questions actually allude to a second astrological aspect, as well. Mercury in Sagittarius is in a T-square with Chiron in Pisces and Pallas in Virgo. On one level, this echoes or develops the themes of the Sagittarius New Moon just over a week ago. (You can review that event here<\/a>.) Both Chiron and Pallas are about focusing the mind (Mercury), but they\u2019re doing so from different points of view.<\/p>\n

Mercury square Chiron is also about \u201cgetting real about your spirituality,\u201d according to Eric. Consider the possibility that \u2018spirituality\u2019 has an action component to it — walking your talk — and the resonance between Mercury-Chiron and Vesta-Pluto is clear. Eric\u2019s take on Pallas in this configuration includes being aware of \u201cfaux religion used in politics,\u201d as well as \u201creal\u201d religion being used as a tool for manipulating the masses, one individual at a time.<\/p>\n

To what, exactly, are you devoted? What do you serve, and how do you mark your progress in the world? Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day, and neither did apartheid fall in a day. We\u2019re all part of this work in progress — but it needs us to get real about it. <\/p>\n
