This is an archetypal reading — less about the day-to-day, more about the development of the soul’s calling, something that may well happen behind the scenes in the shadows rather than out in the open where it is easily identifiable. It could present itself as a felt sense — a feeling of being pulled or called in a direction that aligns with the quality of the cards as they work together.

The Moon, Strength, The Chariot from the Rider-Waite Smith Tarot deck, created by A E Waite and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith. Click on the image for a larger version.

First, The Moon. The Moon calls into awareness that which we are often unaware of. The Moon is our internal shadowland; it is our connection to a different language; it is our link to our intuition. It comes at us from an angle — and that is also the best way to approach it: to feel it as something peripheral, that we feel into before we give it shape with thoughts and words.

Here, The Moon is pointing us to a part of ourselves that wants to connect with us if we are prepared to communicate with it in its mother tongue. And that is also about The Moon: the mother, the feminine, beautiful chaos — or it can feel like insanity. Really, The Moon’s chaos is an organising principle that we can choose to allow to move through us. It can feel strange; it can feel threatening.

What is feeling threatened, however, is that aspect of us that wants to know immediately, to control, in order to feel safe. When we walk in the territory of The Moon, the best way to navigate is to allow ourselves to feel open to the unexpected and the unpredictable, while remembering that the security that we need lies inside — our own inner Moon, which then connects us with the archetype of this card. Our intuition can then direct us so that we align with the freeflow feeling and sensation.

The next card, Strength, brings us right back down to Earth — and this is paralleled in the astrological correspondences. Both outside cards are water (Pisces and Cancer) and the card in the middle — Strength — is fire (Leo). That fire is going to have to hold its own in order not to be inundated by its partners; its partners, in turn, have to retain awareness of fire so as not to compromise its power. Together, they can form some heady steam. The relationship requires conscious balance and cooperation.

Strength speaks of the marriage between the spiritual and the instinctual — or, to put it another way — our sexuality and our connection to something that lies beyond our bodies. The pathway to do this is indicated by the two figures of beast and maiden, and the lemniscate (infinity symbol) above the maiden’s head. The need for balance among the three cards is also held within this single card (as it is in the third card, too). Not usual travelling companions, a woman and a lion here are seen in union.

How is this achieved? Here, the word “strength” is deceptive, because one form of strength is not going to achieve this union. The brute force of a lion can, in a moment, destroy the maiden; the maiden can feel ineffectual next to her feline partner.

The answer lies in submission. The maiden brings her fullest being to the meeting — her divinity, her purity. She does not shy away, nor does she confront. The lion is then given the ability to be who it is with no danger to either of them. It submits to her divinity while she holds its animalistic nature in a way that is utterly accepting of it. Both are submitted to each other, and in that moment there is created a gateway to the infinite. The reading suggests that we are able to do this by using the language of The Moon rather than the languages that we tend to use in our daylight hours — namely speech, action, reaction. Balance is achieved through beingness, receptivity, allowing.

Which leads us into the final card — the synthesis of The Moon and Strength. In The Chariot, we are seeking to align inwardly in order to move forward both within and without. The two sphinx-like creatures in front of the chariot and its charioteer are what we need to align in order to create momentum. If neither is engaged, we go nowhere; if one is engaged without the other, we go in circles. If we feel a sense of connection to ourselves, and a connection to Source, there is an intuitive smoothness and rightness to who we are and what we do.

The Chariot’s appearance in this reading suggests that this is possible, and that it is the best mode of transport we have in order to reach where it is that we are going. Alignment. Alignment created through deep listening to our souls, patience, acceptance, power that serves the interests of all, and a knowingness of what to do next. When you feel that alignment, you will know it. Then you can step up into the driver’s seat knowing that your vehicle is powered by something more than simply you — and it is that wisdom that will effect the change you are seeking.

Astrology/Elemental correspondences: The Moon (Pisces), Strength (Leo), The Chariot (Cancer)

If you want to experiment with tarot cards and don’t have any, we provide a free tarot spread generator using the Celtic Wings spread, which is based on the traditional Celtic Cross spread. This article explains how to use the spread.

By Sarah Taylor This week, we have three major arcana cards for our reading: The Moon, Strength, The Chariot.
