{"id":67878,"date":"2013-06-14T16:30:08","date_gmt":"2013-06-14T20:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/planetwaves.net\/news\/?p=67878"},"modified":"2013-06-14T16:15:34","modified_gmt":"2013-06-14T20:15:34","slug":"virtual-escape-hatches-from-the-daddy-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planetwaves.net\/news\/fe-911-2\/virtual-escape-hatches-from-the-daddy-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Your Escape Hatch from the Daddy State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a little news brief just in time for Father&#8217;s Day. <\/p>\n<p>Yesterday Bloomberg News&#8217; Michael Riley reported <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2013-06-14\/u-s-agencies-said-to-swap-data-with-thousands-of-firms.html\" target=\"_blank\">there are thousands of companies that share sensitive data<\/a> with the US government:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<dl class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 260px;\">\n<dt class=\"wp-caption-dt\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\" \" title=\"Fe\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/planetwaves.net\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/02\/fe-logo-13-feb-09-250-px1.jpg?resize=250%2C133&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\" \" width=\"250\" height=\"133\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/dt>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote><p>Thousands of technology, finance and manufacturing companies are working closely with U.S. national security agencies, providing sensitive information and in return receiving benefits that include access to classified intelligence, four people familiar with the process said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>These programs, whose participants are known as trusted partners, extend far beyond what was revealed by Edward Snowden, a computer technician who did work for the National Security Agency. <\/p>\n<p>The role of private companies has come under intense scrutiny since his disclosure this month that the NSA is collecting millions of U.S. residents\u2019 telephone records and the computer communications of foreigners from Google, Inc. (GOOG) and other Internet companies under court order.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these same Internet and telecommunications companies voluntarily provide U.S. intelligence organizations with additional data, such as equipment specifications, that don\u2019t involve private communications of their customers, the four people said.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Makers of hardware and software, banks, Internet security providers, satellite telecommunications companies and many other companies also participate in the government programs. In some cases, the information gathered may be used not just to defend the nation but to help infiltrate computers of its adversaries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week Daily Kos featured a diary by Lisa Lockwood on how to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/story\/2013\/06\/12\/1215763\/-PRIZM-break-Net-products-that-do-NOT-track-you\" target=\"_blank\">better insure your privacy for your emails and web browsing.<\/a> The diary has a direct link to a website called <a href=\"http:\/\/prism-break.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">PRISM Break<\/a>, and it&#8217;s worthwhile to check it out for your Father&#8217;s Day web-browsing enjoyment and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, over the weekend I will be keeping up with my friends in Istanbul who are part of the Turkish uprising. That means I will be on Facebook, which is our only direct link to each other. Since it&#8217;s a little too late to disguise or deny my sympathies for the <em>Diren Gezi Parki<\/em> (Occupy Gezi Park) Movement &#8212; a movement which also protests government overreach &#8212; I am going to continue with what I am doing.<\/p>\n<p>And to all the flesh-and blood-dads out there of any stripe and gender, I am sending my true love and kisses.
