In the background of this week’s astrology is Neptune’s change of signs from Aquarius to Pisces. Outer planets changing signs mark distinct eras in the story of the world, or perhaps just the story of our culture. Being able to see these changes, and see the defining moments of these eras, is a basic element of modern astrological training or even awareness. The cycle that turns over on Friday, when Neptune ingresses Pisces (and makes no more retrogrades into Aquarius) has its origins on Jan. 28, 1998 (the day Neptune changed signs to Aquarius prior to its retrograde into Capricorn), and a second root on Nov. 27, 1998 (when Neptune entered Aquarius to stay for that cycle).

A lot has changed since 1998. You could argue the point that more changed in these 14 years than in the century that came before them, but really one is a logical extension of the other. Let’s come back to that in a moment — it will be a recurring theme this week, in blogs here, on the <a href="http://planetwaves.net/2012/"target="_blank">Reality Check website and with a focus in this week’s subscriber editions. Friday subscribers will receive a special edition horoscope focused on Neptune’s sign change.

Let’s look around at the rest of the sky. Mars turned retrograde a week ago and is still close to the point where it stationed, at 22+ Virgo. The theme of this degree is the discipline to control the martial power of Mars (the resemblance in the two words — Mars and martial, is not a coincidence). Mars is useless and even dangerous if we cannot control its power — which is about will, intention, vital force and more aggressive manifestations of the psyche.

The Sun and Mercury are in early Aquarius. The two are close to a their exterior conjunction, which happens Feb. 7. For Mercury retrograde watchers, this is the midpoint between the retrograde phases. The next Mercury retrograde begins March 12 and ends April 4.

Neptune is the blue trident with the number 29 next to it. That is the degree position; the smaller number (49) represents the fractions of a degree -- the highest value is 59. That tells us Neptune is close to the edge of Pisces. To identify the other planets and signs, use the glyph key always linked at the top of the page.

The Moon is in Aries overnight Sunday to Monday and ingresses Taurus at 1:28 am EST Monday. The Moon is now opposite Saturn, which can be emotionally tense — but can also represent the resolution of a standoff of some kind. This doesn’t mean you will resolve it with whoever is involved (that is possible) but this setup represents the potential to come to some closure in your own mind and feelings, particularly if there is an impasse. Once ingressing Taurus, the Moon makes a conjunction to Jupiter and a sextile to Chiron, calling attention on one of the true gems in the sky right now — the Jupiter-Chiron sextile. This is useful spiritual power with some leverage behind it — especially true given that Jupiter is currently in the part of the sky where Chiron was discovered in 1977. Think of that as Jupiter sextile Chiron and Jupiter conjunct Chiron at the same time.

Notably, this involves the traditional ruler of Pisces (Jupiter) and Pisces itself, during the very days when Pisces is about to receive the ingress of Neptune. There is something here about staying aligned with the inner wisdom-from-the-core represented by Chiron, which guides us to access the wider, culturally-focused wisdom of Jupiter. You could say the message is pay attention to the expressions of subtle energy, ideas and inspiration. Where Chiron is a factor in the equation, the message is pay attention and take notes, then you will receive the benefits of information related to your healing process and the wider healing process that we all share.

As you do this, remember the sign change of Neptune. This is both a turning point for you individually and for the society we live in. It’s the beginning of a new cycle involving a subtle but extremely effective influence — Neptune — that is badly abused by our society. Neptune energy is almost always exploited or used for escapism, when it has the power to inspire us, or to grant that sense of connection to something else. Neptune is too often used to con us with lies and denial when it’s much more effective as a beacon to guide us toward our inner truth, subtle and elusive though it may be.

You cannot really catch Neptune in a flask, but Chiron in Pisces is reminding us that if we use our minds, use our senses and keep a sharp pencil around, we can learn plenty, and that information will have the odd property of actually being useful.

Looking for insights on how this week’s astrology affects your personal Sun and rising signs?
