That’s right: The future of the planet is being debated at the UN Climate Change Conference, COP 17, in Durban, South Africa, but the story didn’t even crack the listings in the “World” section on CNN.com, let alone their headlines.<\/p>\n

Instead, one of the two featured stories they had at the top of the homepage was an opinion piece declaring that Jesus would have opposed the Occupy movement<\/a>. I am not making this up. Meanwhile, Democracy Now!<\/a> is reporting from on location at COP 17 all week. Negotiators from more than 190 nations are in their final week of key talks on fighting climate change — the future of the Kyoto Protocol is in doubt, as is the formation of a new Green Climate Fund.<\/p>\n

Among the stories Amy Goodman and team cover today are: how the African continent is already being heavily impacted by the climate crisis; a direct action by youth and indigenous peoples from Canada, who presented the delegates with mock gift bags<\/a> (filled with fake tar sand and tourist brochures) to protest proposed tar sands extraction; an interview with with Indian writer and analyst Praful Bidwai, on how the U.S. focus on China and India’s emissions neglects our own responsibility; and the International Trade Union Confederation’s condemning of the decision by the UN to hold next year\u2019s climate change conference in Qatar, a Gulf nation known for its restrictive labor laws.<\/p>\n
