As with every astrological event, those who prepare will be most aware. That preparation necessarily begins with a review of what all New Moons have in common. It would then be appropriate to examine what is different about a New Moon in this particular sign. Finally, it would make sense to correlate the general and specific with the big picture. In our lives, this simple, three step process will provide a valuable clue about how best to adapt our relationships to our place and time.

In every case, a New Moon is when the luminaries, Sun and Moon, are at the same place in the same sign. It happens about once a month. When two objects are at the same place in the same sign, that is a conjunction. In three dimensions, the conjunction translates as Moon moving between Earth and Sun, with the gravity of both combining to act on our planet from the same direction. That alignment has another consequence. We cannot see our Moon while it is lost in the solar glare, reflecting Sun’s light from the side turned away from us. The periodicity (recurrence at regular intervals), the conjunction aspect, the gravitational effect (most easily seen in the ocean tides), and the invisible lunar disc are all native to every New Moon. That is not the case with where it happens.

Nearly every New Moon is in a sign different from the previous luminary conjunction. That is the first and most fundamental distinction. In astrology, every object in the sky corresponds to something in your life. When an object changes signs, it is as if the corresponding character has changed attire. You know what a difference clothing can make in how others perceive you as well as how comfortable you are. The same is true of luminaries and planets. The costume represented by any given sign does not fit all archetypes equally well. That extends to conjunctions because they represent a merger of energies.

Sun’s archetype is like the Sun itself, obvious but indispensable. It is the day we take for granted, the light we need, and the consciousness essential for sentience. Moon is not the opposite, but rather a compliment to the solar paradigm. The lunar is emblematic of the processes that go on in the night or in the unconscious mind. Merge the two energies and you have something of a whole combining that which is plainly evident and that which is made apparent by its influence. Scorpio, however, is a problematic place for that merger.

As a matter of geometry, Moon is the luminary with the greater sartorial dilemma on Wednesday. Luna is exalted in Taurus and Scorpio is the sign opposed to Taurus. In the language of astrology, that means Moon is ‘in fall’ while in Scorpio. A planet in fall is uncomfortable and weakened in its clothing. How that happens for the Moon in Scorpio is a worthwhile study.

Scorpio is a water sign. Moon is the ruler of Cancer, which is also a water sign, so we know the aqueous element is compatible with lunar expression. Scorpio has a fixed quality, which means that it follows a cardinal, or season-changing sign. Taurus, which fits Luna like a glove, is also fixed. Therefore, the Moon’s fall in Scorpio is not intrinsic, it is relative. You can wear a bathing suit in a deserted church and get away with it. It is also acceptable to wear your swimming attire in the company of others at a pool or
beach. In most cases, however, you will find it awkward to attend a public worship service in the same outfit. Moon’s difficulties in Scorpio are a matter of place and time. A conjunction with the Sun provides some cover.

Sun does not encounter the Moon’s positional difficulty in Scorpio. On the other hand, Sol’s archetype is not strongest in either a water element or a fixed modality. When the luminaries conjoin in Scorpio, the shortcomings of one are compensated for by the strengths of the other. The merger is therefore mutually beneficial, the definition of symbiosis. When the New Moon takes place on Wednesday, Luna will be free to do what it does best, working out of sight, relating to the deep waters of Earth and the intangible fluidity of our intuitions and emotions, reinforced by solar gravity. Sol will likewise be coming from its strength as a visible source of light and consciousness, integrating the lunar aptitude for sustaining what the luminary conjunction has started. Such mutual sustenance will be important for all of us in the big picture.

The big picture in our current astrology is the profound historical implication of Uranus in Aries and Pluto in Capricorn. Their symbolic relationship is an enduring and increasing tension between an irresistible force and an unmovable object. That tension is taking place for all of us at the same time on both the inside and the outside. It cannot last forever and when something finally gives, it will be a big deal. The ultimate outcome will almost certainly result in long lasting consequences that require us to adapt to an entirely different way of life in order to thrive. The conscious act of relating in a symbiotic manner will go a long way towards enhancing our adaptability.

For a long time, most of us have looked to large institutions as a source of order and sustenance. In return, we have contributed our living efforts to maintain the impersonal structure. Increasingly, those institutions are not holding up their end of the bargain and we are less than whole for it. The only way we can become whole again is through each other. If we are to make the shift to investing our lives in actual people rather than in corporations, governments and organized religion, we will need to go beyond simply tolerating our differences, we will need to make the best of them. If this New Moon in Scorpio means anything at all, it is telling us to get started.

Offered In Service

We will have a New Moon in Scorpio on Wednesday at about 3:55 pm EDT.
