You could say this is the opposite of enlightenment. On one side of the Full Moon (which is an opposition, or polarized situation) we have the Moon in Leo conjunct this weird point called Transpluto. Leo Moon = self concept and Transpluto = over-focus. That would translate approximately to, “I’m a plumber, I’m a plumber, I’m a plumber, I’m such a dedicated plumber, I’m a plumber, oh I’m a dad and I like Pink Floyd. I’m such a plumber.”

The other side of the Full Moon is the Sun conjunct Neptune. The Sun has a connection to Leo/Meo (as the ruler of that sign), and conjunct Neptune it’s lost in a fog. The Leo sense of Me can evaporate when it gets around Neptune. Sun conjunct Neptune is saying, “I was a plumber yesterday. I dreamed of being a plumber last night. I like plumbing. Plumbing is so interesting. All these pipes lead to God. God is water. Water is everywhere. I feel so meaningless and alone. Who am I? Oh, I’m a plumber. I better get to work.”

This is compensated by the Leo Moon conjunct Transpluto, which then says, “I’m the best fuckin’ plumber in this city. I’m such a plumber. Wanted to be one as a kid.” And so on. Note, this is a kind of false dialog. It’s not really a conversation that goes anywhere or gets any information onto the floor. Fortunately there is a new influence in the picture, that will help a lot with clearing fog: Chiron in Pisces. This little planet, discovered spinning around our Sun in 1977 (it started a revolution, but that’s another topic) is opposite the Full Moon. It’s right in the mix.

Neptune and Pisces are related (not the same thing, but they speak the same language), and Chiron has a lot of experience clarifying Neptune. Chiron is all about gaining clarity, wherever it is, and involved with Neptune it’s going to address denial; in Pisces, there’s an impulse to focus creative energy. Some people prefer the notion ‘spiritual’ but I would say that really, spiritual is not a practical term. Creative, despite what anyone may have told you, is practical. Creative is practical because the world is new every day and needs new ideas every day; it’s practical because we love the results of creative process, which has a nice effect of providing comfort for our rather stressed out minds.

And, while we’re busy being stressed out, we are — in fact — wondering who we are and what we’re doing here, and when you really ask that question, it feels a little like Pisces. The essence of Pisces is a question that is answered by something like a song or a painting, rather than an intellectual answer. Chiron does not provide a concrete answer but it makes the question a little more poignant, and helps us focus creative energy. It’s like this: most people don’t write down their clever and funny ideas. They have them, for sure. I do know about this. For a long time I walked around saying, “Oh, that would make a great picture. That would make a great picture.” Finally, I got a camera, and started making photos. Then I started meeting people (including a lot of interesting women) through the photos. Then I started writing about the pictures and the people I was photographing.

Basically, any successful creative experience goes from Pisces (a misty idea) to Chiron in Pisces (documenting that idea, developing it, putting it to work, having fun with it). Remember that this is not about ‘being a photographer’ as much as it is about making a picture and seeing what happens. Identity is what you explore, not what you know about yourself. We usually think of identity as something we get trapped in. This Full Moon is about identity as something we experiment with.

One of the primary reasons we follow astrology is to understand the question, “Who am I?” Tonight’s Full Moon in Leo is suggesting that it’s okay not to be so certain about that.
