A bit out of sorts; perhaps out of season. Yet Beltane is the season of Venus, or one of them. That pentacle that modern pagans wear and tattoo on their bodies is the shape that Venus makes in the sky during her four year retrograde cycle — the stations retrograde and direct trace a pattern of 72 degrees of the roundel; the pentacle is a natural idea, taken from heaven. Taurus is one of the signs ruled by Venus and naturally Beltane is when the Sun aspects the midpoint of this sign — usually around May 5. At Avebury Henge, an ancient site dedicated to the Sun and the Moon, a massive obelisk would cast a shadow over the vulva stone on Beltane and the two would connect. They still do; we still do.

Maria and Eric, photographed by Neal McDonough.

We think of Uranus as being an eccentric planet; for many reasons known to astronomers, Venus is every bit as odd as Uranus. We think of her as being about love and light, and her atmosphere is made of ammonia and is about 900 degrees hot. Astrologically Venus has more in common with Mercury than any other planet; and while in theory possessed of emotion, true intelligence is impossible without Venus attributes.

Venus is in Gemini for this Beltane, while Mercury is retrograde in Taurus. They occupy one another’s signs, which has a diversity of interpretations — nearly all of which are context-specific. Mutual reception doesn’t necessarily mean anything inherently; it’s applied to a question, an issue, an occasion. If we apply it to the question, ‘how does it feel to be Venus now’, we get: it feels many different ways. This is always true: Venus is connected with earthy, airy and watery signs (Taurus, Libra and Pisces). In Gemini we have an immediate image of a mirror, of faceting, of two sides of the story. Then apply the mutual reception and she’s in Taurus (one possible move using mutual reception is that the two planets can swap places, like castling in chess). The retrograde of Mercury hints that even Taurus has two sides — somatic intelligence and that of the mind. If any planet has the power to unify both, Venus can embody the dichotomy.

Anyone who has ever gotten to know a woman knows that it feels many different ways to be one. Sometimes it feels several ways at the same time. Simone de Beauvoir, author of The Second Sex (one of the truly great works of feminist philosophy) describes animals who both invite and resist sexual penetration at the same time. She’s giving a biological metaphor for what it means to be a human female, lest anyone take personally such a response from one.

I used to get annoyed that women would dress themselves up to the hilt and then seem to resent getting attention. That they would so obviously flaunt their sex and then blame me for noticing; for admiring; for desiring. That a woman could express resentment for my finding her attractive, and also for my not finding her attractive enough. As I’ve grown older I’ve come to appreciate these seeming paradoxes, see the humor and not take them so seriously, or rather, so personally. I leaned: if I think a woman is hot, that’s my business.

It’s complicated being a woman. A woman, that is, in the sense of the social construction imposed on the biological reality. The two provide many conflicting sets of instructions.

Many men might disgust her but she craves their attention. Maybe their desire nature is alien and invasive and pushy, but all girls love to watch the boys get hot. She is better than, and inferior to. She portrays herself as sanctimonious and pure, while wearing no undies and craving fucking whomever. She is the consummate loyal partner, who secretly flirts with promiscuity, or goes for it. She wants to be free and be herself and be authentic and real, and at the same time wants to be adored and possessed. Menstruation is a curse; menstruation is power; menstruation is ordinary.

Her eggs have her craving sperm and babies and homemaking, and yet most of her orgasms come from fantasizing about other women. Or ‘other’ men, or anonymous men, nameless and faceless men. She competes and she admires and she wants to be like other women; she resents and loves them at the same time: Venus in Gemini, in mutual reception to Mercury retrograde in Taurus. Venus is approaching a close conjunction to Juno: to possess and be possessed. Jealousy is a birthright and the bane of her existence. It is a spark of passion or its killer; it’s wrong, necessary, natural and the thing to grow out of. Yet maybe she wants two husbands. Many women have told me they want a wife.

If all of this feels like a profound mix of tensions and emotions subtle, of delicious and perhaps a bit maddening conflict, so be it. Who can resist the enticement to dive in? At the moment, Mars is strong and solid and direct in Leo, suggesting that there is a counterpart to the female nature in the fiery, the cocky, the solid, hard cock with one intention only, irresistible as such.

And for that, I know, many women thank the Goddess.

A Beltane message from Venus, channeled by Eric.
