The lunar nodes are points in a chart that are treated like planets by most astrological traditions, but which are are actually just locations along the zodiac where there is no physical object; just an event coming. That event would be the Moon passing north of south of the celestial equator (the equator, extended into space). When the Sun is there (which it is currently not), the event would also be an eclipse. Remember, though: the nodes are associated with eclipses.

The nodes in most traditions represent something that sounds like ‘the past’ (Ketu or the South Node) and ‘the future’ (Rahu or the North Node). It’s actually not that simple; it’s more like the Nodes represent two points of incarnation and what holds us onto the cosmic physical plane: an attachment to what has happened in the past (karma) and to our concept of the future and what guides us there; and what motivates us to the actions and choices we make (dharma).

Think of karma as “the collected actions and consequences of the past, which can be resolved by awareness and action” and dharma as “acting as if to hold the world together.”

Hinduism has its problems and has caused a lot of problems. However, it also includes some useful spiritual technology, and one piece of that are the concepts of karma and dharma, which are missing from Western spirituality or psychology in any kind of practical or tangible concept. Christianity boiled it down to “if you’re good you go to heaven,” which gives us about as much guidance as telling a kid “if you’re good you get cotton candy” and from that expecting him to figure out all of ethics, his place in the world and his life path.

We could summarize Ketu or the south node as a collection of tendencies and attributes that point to where we came from, and indicate something of our talents and hangups; and Rahu as a set of potentials and the feeling of a calling that, if we’re paying attention, guide us in the direction we need to be going, and which feels vaguely like a calling. We would look for this in the natal chart (the nodes will be in approximately the same place in the progressed chart, though even the few degrees difference between natal and progressed can be meaningful to read). When you are reading the nodes in your natal chart, the house position is generally considered to carry more weight than the sign position; but the sign position tells us what planet rules the node in question. For example, if your South Node is in Taurus, it is ruled by Venus and the position of Venus in your chart will tell you a lot about what your South Node is getting at.

In the sky, when transiting, the nodes tell a kind of general fable and provide the feeling of a collective psychic and emotional tide. And at the moment, the late Aries Moon is exactly square the nodes in Cancer and Capricorn. This can feel like a point of reorientation; the distinction between the past and the future can be higher contrast (typically it is blurred and murky). Sorting out those motives and attachments can even seem impossible. So for example, a mantra, “I seek a future different than the past” can be helpful. Cancer and Capricorn themselves have a karmic feeling, and are closely associated with family, society and all their expectations. Aries is where we would break free of those things in a conscious way.

The Moon is still at full phase, though we can use a different term when it gets to Taurus in a few hours (then we can call it waning or old gibbous). That will cool off what was indeed a fairly hot Full Moon in Aries. Through the end of last week I kept reading Sally Brompton Pisces horoscopes (New York Post, TV Guide) that said stuff like “once the Full Moon passes you’re going to realize there was nothing to worry about so you might as well not worry now,” which turned out to be good advice.

I would propose there’s a Moon void beginning as the Moon separates from the square to the Nodes (that would be at about 9 am EDT). It will enter Taurus and simultaneously trine Pluto at about 12:30 pm EDT. Our next conversation here will probably be about Mercury in Virgo making its third conjunction to Saturn as part of the recent Mercury retrograde; soon to be followed by Venus conjunct Saturn.

The Sun is in Libra but there’s a lot of Virgo in the air right now. That can be discernment or zit picking; the choice is yours.

Good morning, or afternoon in the UK and Europe; evening in Australia: As of this writing just before 8:30 am EDT, the Moon is moving through late Aries; and it’s precisely square the lunar nodes at about 27+ Cancer/Capricorn.
