Good morning to you…<\/p>\n

I just ran into Genevieve on the street, when I went out to feed the parking meter. She used to be one of the contributors to this page — she’s now a case worker for an organization called Family of Woodstock, a social services provider.<\/p>\n

We chatted a little and then she said, “I’m really upset that the World Health Organization has raised the level of alert to Five,” on a scale of six. “Six is supposed to be the collapse of the infrastructure. It’s a world pandemic where there aren’t even police because they’re either sick or home taking care of someone who is. And here we are at a Five and everything is perfectly normal.”<\/p>\n

It did seem to be fine, the Sun was shining and I had every expectation that within a few minutes I would have had a ticket.<\/p>\n

This is kind of what I’ve been getting at.<\/p>\n

Looking at this situation from what might be called a spiritual perspective, that is to say, some way other than the ordinary worldly Tamiflu perspective, informed by something other than fear, we face a potentially useful question.<\/p>\n

Those who have done A Course in Miracles<\/em> undoubtedly remember the exercise toward the beginning of the workbook where you run through this litany of disasters and in the interest of training yourself to see the deeper reality beyond them, say things to yourself like:<\/p>\n

God did not create that airplane crash, therefore it’s not real.<\/em><\/p>\n

God did not create that car accident, therefore it is not real.<\/em><\/p>\n

God did not create that influenza virus, therefore it’s not real.<\/em><\/p>\n

It occurred to me this morning waking up that this is basically what I’m doing when I either suggest that this flu pandemic is a gross exaggeration, make fun of it or in some way question the veracity of what we are being told. I’m not doing it as a ‘spiritual’ exercise but there is undoubtedly something metaphysical about a certain kind of joking around. It is a form of denial. One of the central teachings of A Course in Miracles<\/em> is determining what is real and what is not, and denying what is not real, in favor of leaving space and creating energy for what is real. What is real is the healing and correction that can come if we leave space for it; and it is more difficult if we get caught up in the ‘reality’ of the problem.<\/p>\n

On that basis, it’s truly encouraging to see so many people looking at this problem and saying gee, this is really stupid. This cannot be what we’re being told it is. Something is a little off here; this cannot be real.<\/p>\n

I am not saying that these affirmations make something real or not real. From the standpoint of The Course<\/em> (now referred to in shorthand by some as A Course<\/em>, which I just cannot say without feeling awkward), either something is or isn’t real, and therefore needs to be treated as such. A toy gun is a good example. If someone is pointing something at you that’s a toy gun versus a real gun, that makes a big difference; and once you would determine that it’s a toy gun you would handle yourself totally differently than if it were a real one.<\/p>\n

I mentioned that I spent the day at O’Hare Monday and I met this guy who is one of the principals of a company that sells DNA testing equipment. Of course I asked him what he thought of this pig flu thing and he said, “It’s the way the world is going.” Now of course he is invested in the whole process — his company is part of the med\/sci community. To him it’s real, but I understood that he was saying something else: we could be seeing a lot more of this kind of thing.<\/p>\n

We could see a lot of weirdness on the way to this thing we’re calling 2012 for short. And in order to get by, in order to function, in order to stay sane and keep our lives in order and reasonably pleasant and to help hold the world together, we need to be able to deny what is not real. Part of this is going to be coming to the potentially difficult realization that what is real for some people is not real for others; what may be real to that person over there may not be real to you or me, and what is mediating this realness is specifically belief.<\/p>\n

And this, so far as I can see, is one of the crucial ways that what we choose to believe or not believe is one of the determining factors of our existence, and of our ability to function in a helping or healing capaicity and feel strong and whole doing so.<\/p>\n
