I have a program that searches aspects; you have to zoom back to before the aspect happens, then you set the controls and you travel in time to a particular destination. This particular date was my dad’s 57th birthday but that’s not why I had the chart up: it’s the day that Neptune took up residence in Aquarius. I was looking at this chart as a potential messenger of how the Internet became the all-supreme thing that it is. The Sun is exactly conjunct Uranus in Aquarius that day; the Moon is in Aquarius and Jupiter is, as well: in fact, it’s exactly conjunct my Saturn.

Venus is stationing direct in Pisces.

Now that I mention it, it’s a chart for right before I left the Hudson Valley and jumped to Europe the first time around, where I started Planet Waves: pretty much the perfect image of Jupiter conjunct my 9th house Saturn.

Astrology is an amazing tool for understanding the past: this thing that seems to stalk us. It’s a technique for looking at what we now call ‘issues’, providing a map back through the moments of change, complication, injury and breakthrough. I’ve developed my own techniques for doing this. I’m going to give them a name — soundings. This is an architectural term for looking inside the odd places in a building to see what’s going on.

One way to look at the passage of time is as a structure that we build. In this model, time does not ‘go by’ — rather, it accumulates. I don’t think we like this fact. We cannot really put a wrecking ball to history. There are rare instances where it’s actually possible to move on, but usually something is necessary — be it understanding, resolution, healing. One thing we can do with astrology is go back and do some of the residual work of the past: raise awareness, see and maybe understand the influences, and work on several levels of influence at once.

As for the present: that perfect building block of the past. The Sun will be in Aries one more week. Venus is slowing to a stop in the last degree of Pisces; so one thing that’s different now from most of the year is that Venus is not in Aries, she’s in Pisces. This is one of those aspects that in my view gets the good-for-everyone rating. This last degree involves the theme of visualization. We can create what we can see. We can create ourselves into what we can see ourselves being.

If you are visualizing a woman, either the one you want to be or the one you want to be with, now would be an excellent time.

There is also the self-esteem theme of Venus retrograde, formerly in Aries: I would love to hear from you about this but personally I can say it’s been a profound time for understanding and dismantling my own self-esteem related baggage and (in that odd way that spiritual growth always feels new) I feel like I’m on a whole new level of the game. My various self-esteem dramas are melting into confidence. Venus will station direct, still in Pisces, later this week.

Speaking of: Mars is now about one degree from Uranus in Pisces. This is a big one: for making bold statements, entirely new creative activities, for asserting one’s individuality, and for putting out an emotionally grounded but no less passionate male or yang energy.

As I finish this blog, Frank Sinatra is crooning away here at Dominick’s: You’re nobody till somebody loves you / You’re nobody till somebody cares.

Watch that one. It cannot be true. It’s the trap. You’re nobody till you care.

This morning I opened my MacBook and was greeted by a chart from Jan. 28, 1998.
