Dear Friend and Reader:<\/p>\n

A movement is afoot.\u0412\u00a0A nationwide\u0412\u00a0tax protest<\/a> has been building, started late February by CNBC’s financial correspondent Rick Santelli and now promoted\u0412\u00a0by Fox News, called “Tax Day Tea Party”<\/a>, where participants, most of them beneficiaries of eight years of Bush tax cuts,\u0412\u00a0protest the Obama Stimulus Package by\u0412\u00a0sending bags of tea to flood the floors of Congress.<\/p>\n

This form of protest has been nicknamed “Tea-Bagging Parties” and\u0412\u00a0tax day,\u0412\u00a0April 15th has been deemed a National Day of Tea-Bagging<\/em>, where protesters gather with signs and tea bags supposedly in reference to the original American tax revolt,\u0412\u00a0the Boston Tea Party. However, there is a minor problem. Not in the concept, but the\u0412\u00a0brand.<\/a><\/p>\n

I guess this gives a whole new\u0412\u00a0twist on “My Country ’tis of Thee” and\u0412\u00a0its refrain land of the Pilgrim’s pride<\/em>.\u0412\u00a0Now I’ve never been one to object to the application of letting freedom ring, and\u0412\u00a0having the bombs bursting in air in this instance may be more preferable for some, but not all. I guess it would depend on how patriotic we feel at the climactic moment.<\/p>\n

But do they have to do this across the country? Can’t it be a state’s right to choose whether to tea-bag or not? In a matter of months,\u0412\u00a0there could be\u0412\u00a0a statewide\u0412\u00a0initiative campaign erupting in my state, qualifying who can tea-bag, where and with whom. With Pluto in Capricorn, we may end up mandating licensed<\/em> tea-bagging. Damn government.\u0412\u00a0The endless court battles. One referendum after the next. The endless court appeals. The lines around San Francisco City Hall. The horror!<\/p>\n

But this is America. The right to free speech and peaceable assembly is ours by\u0412\u00a0constitution and everyone should have their say, even if\u0412\u00a0the movement\u0412\u00a0references\u0412\u00a0the nickname to a left-of-vanilla sexual act.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether or not someone in network\u0412\u00a0marketing forgot to do their demographic research, we all deserve our day\u0412\u00a0under\u0412\u00a0democracy’s sun.\u0412\u00a0\u0412\u00a0Innuendo aside, even if the protesters’ sense of oppression by our government has little basis in actually being oppressed,\u0412\u00a0 they deserve this day. They deserve it\u0412\u00a0even if the “oppressed” shamelessly brought us American policies that have lead\u0412\u00a0us all to\u0412\u00a0the brink of\u0412\u00a0 financial collapse.<\/p>\n

Okay, so maybe they did name this tax revolt with intention. By protesting you’ve been victimized\u0412\u00a0for being\u0412\u00a0taxed when you have benefitted from economic policies that furthered the divide between rich and poor,\u0412\u00a0allowing you\u0412\u00a0discretionary income to invest while other people have lost their homes, jobs, or future, you are proudly telling the country, hell, the world, that you deserve nothing less than all of it, regardless of the cost.<\/p>\n

And nothing says “blow me”\u0412\u00a0better than that.<\/p>\n
