Now they\u0432\u0402\u2122re recognized for another first: scientists are saying placoderms in Western Australia were the first creatures that were\u0412\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Placodermi\" target=\"_blank\">fertilized within their mothers<\/a>. &#8220;It was (previously) thought that such ancient fish would show a more<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zimbio.com\/Reuters+News\/articles\/5894\/Prehistoric+Fish+Pioneered+Sex\" target=\"_blank\">primitive type of reproduction<\/a>, with sperm and eggs combining externally in the water, as still happens with many modern fish.&#8221;\u0412\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, an expedition led by John Long of Museum Victoria to the Gogo Formation of Western Australia resulted in the discovery of fossilized remains of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Materpiscis_attenboroughi\" target=\"_blank\">a partially ossified skeleton<\/a>\u0412\u00a0of a juvenile (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Placodermi\" target=\"_blank\">placoderm<\/a>) and the mineralised umbilical cord&#8221; within the tail section of a female.
