Inner Space for March

Dear Friend and Reader:

We’re now in that mysterious interval between two eclipses, and the suspended moment of a Mercury station direct. There was a fairly rare total lunar eclipse [in Virgo] over the weekend, and we are headed for a partial solar eclipse [in late Pisces, conjunct Ceres] on March 18, just before Equinox. This is very much an Aries Point address, occurring within two degrees of the beginning of Aries and the first day of Northern Hemisphere spring.

March is a busy month. We’re just emerging from the Saturn-Neptune opposition phase two. Retrograde Mercury ends the 8th. Then on the heels of the above-mentioned solar eclipse comes the vernal equinox.

The Mars-Chiron conjunction in Aquarius March 15 favors those who have fewer advantages rather than more, those who draw their resources from the community rather than from the bank. Mars-Chiron tends to sway the energy in the direction of the underdog both in world affairs and in personal ones, and is helpful to those who have awaited their moment. Then Mars makes a daring and imaginative conjunction to Neptune March 25, and a nearly simultaneous opposition to Saturn. This is a story about individuals with individual goals placing emphasis is on group cooperation in every form it may take, from couples to friends to families to communities.

In all, it’s a genuine time of renewal and a palpable, even useful turning point like few others we’ve been through lately, all emphasized by the change of season. The emphasis is on growth, but we need to define that in a way that’s pleasurable (Pisces style) and that benefits everyone (Aquarius style) and with awareness of responsibility to the collective (Aquarius, Chiron and Saturn theme).

Note to readers, Planet Waves will be rolling in with the tide at the NCGR conference in Baltimore later this week, so if you’re coming, look for us there. Here is your Inner Space horoscope for March, from Upstate House magazine in Kingston, NY.

Aries (March 20-April 19)
Eclipses in Pisces and Virgo this month are likely to have one of two effects: to shake you up so you feel somewhat insecure, or shake you up so you feel how stable your foundations are. The choice in this is yours, but the question is why any of it is happening. The reason has to do with your creative spirit and your ongoing mission of freeing yourself. One factor in all this is how you relate to your space: is it designed to be fixed and stable, or can you change it around every day to follow your inspiration? Flexibility equals freedom; the willingness to change and the ability to do so will open you up in surprising ways.

Taurus (April 19-May 20)
Your friends play a role this month that you have long envisioned for them, but have been unable to make real. It’s not that they’re clueless — but in some ways, they do seem to lack your persistence when it comes to meeting their goals. Now they are starting to show some of that little extra something, and while it may not be in your bullish quality, it is a form of inspiration that is difficult for you to access. I suggest you plan a series of dinner parties for three or four people that become creative planning sessions for your most cherished goals.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)
Tobias, a Gemini and owner of the New Paltz creative cooperative where I’m working today, says he got his lease renewed for a year with a one-year renew option. “Year to year, that’s a good way to work your living space” were the first words out of my mouth, without even thinking. Indeed, I don’t suggest you plan for where to be, or much else, beyond one year from now, when Pluto begins its transition out of your opposite sign, Sagittarius. At that point you are likely to want to completely rearrange your relationships and the physical structure of your life. And yes, year to year is great, but month to month is better and day to day the best.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)
Your charts this month suggest you’ll spend more time away from home than at home, and the further you go, the better. You must be feeling this hankering, perhaps to visit people and places that factored strongly in the past. However, I suggest you go a few places you’ve never been. This will disrupt the pattern of your life, which is just what you need. Eclipses are great for helping us rearrange our priorities, and the more you can change your scenery the more you’ll be able to see all you have going for you. Ideas that never would have occurred to you will make themselves known far from home.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)
This month’s unusual Mars-Chiron conjunction suggests that where a partnership is concerned, the space you live in affects the relationship in ways that are meaningful and may seem to be coming from some other factor. However, I suggest you look first to space factors, starting in the bedroom, then checking the kitchen, then bathroom areas and finally, living spaces. Seemingly minor changes will go a long way toward bringing you closer; the projects themselves will initiate a co-creative quality to your life that will be extremely sexy if nothing else, and provoke all kinds of interesting curiosities. If you don’t have a partner, this plan will work with nearly anyone you care about, in your space, or theirs.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius for around the first week of March, but the effect will linger. Pisces, your opposite sign, is involved because the retrograde started there: this is about commitments and communication. To avoid misunderstandings, take things slowly. Spend a lot of time going over what you think you know about the people you care about, and making sure you really understand your agreements on the same level and in the same language. Or, spend a lot of time listening and observing, to effect the same basic end. Listen to and observe yourself at the same time: the effect will be lasting peace, if this is what you want.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)
This is your year to do community work, but not the ordinary kind. You need to do something original, most likely a project of your own creation. The image is keeping a flame burning. The feeling is devoting yourself to something whether you feel you’ll succeed or not; the devotion at the core is the awareness factor, the energetic factor, the real thing at the heart of it all. What you will be doing will benefit many people, even if it’s not immediately apparent, but the feeling is the steady passion you’re giving to the work or idea.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
This is a time of radical transformations of where you live, how you live there, and who you relate to there. Two long-term factors in the home sector of your chart are activated by Mars: first a conjunction to Chiron, then a conjunction to Neptune. Action, innovation, imagination and mainly a sage invention that saves the day are what will emerge from all this astrology. Beneath it, you are pushing through your old ideas about what it means to be “an individual” with the sole intention of being free to feel and express yourself. This may not be an easy month but it will be a meaningful one, and I don’t think you would trade it for anything.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 22)
Ideas have power and at the moment they are rippling out from your core like a pulsar sends out waves of energy. At first this will feel like you’re making decisions, then it will feel like you’re making long overdue changes, then you’re likely to make some new friends who will keep the process going. The key here is not going so far from home — all the best stuff happens right in your usual haunts, and new contacts come from your existing circle of friends. The part you need to do is keep your energy high, and keep paying attention to your environment, taking nothing for granted.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)
Saturn has just made its second of three oppositions to Neptune, which allowed you to address a deeply embedded past issue, one you’re likely to have lived with a long time but weren’t quite aware was bugging you. Don’t forget you accomplished this. You’re now under exceptionally strong astrology to build your financial position, which will benefit you and a good few people around you. You’re someone who is geared to thinking of group welfare as a fundamental value for living. You are not in it alone; we are not in it alone; you are the contact point between the two — especially right now.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)
You are not merely getting clear in a relationship: you are getting clear in all your relationships. It’s taking time and the benefit will be lasting, and different than anything you’ve ever experienced. I don’t suggest you be content with small progress, only that you notice it when it happens. Every small gesture of honest contact, of mutual support, of leaving the past behind, and honest yearning for truth and freedom in your partnerships is a real step in this process, and one will surely lead to the next. When you look back, I think you’ll be astonished at how far you came, what you learned, and how much better you feel.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)
You’re typically someone who lives with such overwhelming forces that you’ve had to grow up from feeling exceedingly small. This has meant learning to be influential in subtle but meaningful ways, and putting self-awareness on top of your list of priorities to save the world. The highly unusual series of developments that occur after your birthday, just as the Sun enters the sign Aries, will demonstrate that you’ve been on the right track all along. More than ever, you are your home, and you need to allow yourself space to feel comfortable in your skin. This will have an effect on those you care about: the sense of personal freedom that comes as a result will inspire others to admit they need the same thing.
