A partially-bloated Ronald McDonald aims at the world. Wednesday night on Manhattan's Upper West Side, balloons for today's 83rd annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade were inflated by mostly volunteer preparation crews. Every year on the eve of the holiday, the difficult-to-hide parade setup is open to the public, and families (with throngs of children) flock to the site to get a closer look. Ronald, for his part, is still aiming at the world, in particular the Amazon Rain Forest. "Fast-food giants like McDonald's are trashing the Amazon for cheap meat," Gavin Edwards of Greenpeace said in 2006. "Every time you buy a Chicken McNugget, you could be taking a bite out of the Amazon." That, and it takes 600 gallons of water to produce every Quarter-Pounder hamburger. Photo by Danielle Voirin. In a local bookshop, I found an illustrated black volume called "Harlots, Whores and Hookers" by Hilary Evans with photos provided by the Mary Evans Picture Library; a family effort, I gather. The book is a history of prostitution. It begins with a discussion of the overwhelming taboo on prostitution despite its existence in every culture: on practicing it, on discussing it, on admitting to it. Whores are omitted from most histories; they are often treated as nonpeople.

Advertising and the End of the World | By Sut Jhally
Planet Waves does not accept paid advertising, and this video reveals why. U Mass at Amherst professor Sut Jhally explains that advertising by its nature must provoke people in the moment, and leave no room for awareness of the future or the future consequences of our actions. This video clip is a six-minute summary of his much longer documentary.

Most of what astrologers do is help people get over their hang-ups and inhibitions. Astrologers work to peer into the psyche and better understand the inner workings of a person. We can allegedly glimpse the future or at least see how it's developing. Some astrologers help their clients solve problems, but for our average going rate of $100 to $300 per session, we are essentially motivational coaches. We are high-tech cheerleaders with a fetish for astronomy, mythology and symbols. If we represent the gods, it's for the purpose of helping humanity do its thing.

First of all, ladies and gents, since I have no experience in the paid sex-work category, I am speaking from a strictly free pussy stance. I'm not, however, discounting the work paid sex-workers do. They certainly have filled a necessary niche in the market place. Someone pays, they fuck, they suck...whatever. I'm the last one to judge. Get your dollar dollar bills, girls. Again, to clarify, I am not speaking to those who are trafficked/sold into prostitution either, or those who want to leave the sex industry- this a different topic altogether.

Astrology as the Art of Bullshit | The First Planet Waves, by Eric Francis
Astrology is based on the idea that there is some relationship between human existence and the model of the solar system. For some people, this is a stretch longer than fitting nylon pantyhose on an elephant. For others, it's obvious that we live in one reality and that the whole show is not just connected by some ideas and theories, but that in actual fact, life is one holistic experience of planets, bugs, people, trees, computers, rocks, thought, and everything else with which we share existence.
