His Highness the Aga Khan (left), a direct descendent of the prophet Mohammed and the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims, and José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission (right), signed a joint declaration Tuesday which formalizes the partnership between the EU and the Aga Khan Development Network. This is a group of private, international, non-denominational agencies working to improve living conditions and opportunities for people in some of the poorest parts of the developing world. The Aga Khan is a respected spiritual leader with the Ismaili (also known as Khoja) community, with Jamaat Khanas (places of worship) all over the world, including a large following in Mumbai, India.
