Welcome to Venus in Taurus — or, feel the love

Yesterday Venus left Aries (a tense, though impetuous and passionate placement for the goddess of love) and entered Taurus (one of its home signs of rulership — the other is Libra). The sign change brings Venus into aspect with Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter in useful, even playful ways. We could, on the surface, liken this to someone coming home from work and slipping out of heels that pinch and into soft fuzzy slippers. Now that Venus has shed the martial psychic armor she’s been wearing in Aries (sign ruled by Mars, the god of war) she — that is, our own feminine sides — can be more at ease with what our senses perceive, and bring the physical and emotional into harmony.

Venus, by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Venus (Aphrodite) was born of sea foam, and in astrology, the planet has a great affinity with Pisces' oceans.

This blend is heightened by the fact that Venus is also strong in Pisces (it’s the exalted planet), and there is a lot of Pisces energy right now several ways.

The first and most obvious point of Pisces contact is a sextile with Neptune in that sign. Venus in this flowing, supportive aspect to Neptune adds the essence of meaning to what we call love. It’s about gently dissolving boundaries and attachments. This may be an especially useful aspect if you’re finding yourself drawn into certain characteristics of Venus in Taurus, such as possessiveness and a certain quiet stubbornness (or alternately, persistence and devotion).

The first pair are mental/emotional postures that can take hold, especially if we feel threatened by some kind of loss (literal or ego-based). If you can allow yourself to soften your grip a little, Neptune’s dissolving property can connect you to the more transcendent quality of Venus.

Venus is also approaching a sextile to Chiron, which is just a smidge further into Pisces than Neptune is. Plus, Venus is beginning to activate Chiron’s discovery degree, which is 4 degrees Taurus. The degree where Chiron was discovered can act a lot like Chiron itself; this accentuates the sensation of emotional contact as a deep driving force in the psyche. Venus-Chiron has a mystical quality to its passion.

Love is about being open to more than a person or a feeling; it’s about being open to existence. If you’re feeling constrained in love, you may need to open up to the next few levels. The physical body is a vehicle for what some call ‘cosmic consciousness’ because it’s our way of experiencing the cosmos, at least while we have it to explore in. Going beyond the limits that we perceive the body to have, as it becomes an instrument of awareness and not of limitation. This can take practice, including meditation or experimentation with mind-altering substances.

Astrology Today: Oracle for Tuesday, March 6, 2012

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Cancer weekly for July 4, 2002.

Astrology Blog: The Oracle, Weekly Horoscopes, Monthly Horoscopes.

How much is a self worth? We use this term rather glibly as if the worth of a self could somehow be assessed. Worth is defined as The quality that renders something desirable, useful or valuable. But it has an archaic meaning to befall or betide that is something unexpected that just happens. The two words derive from the same ancient linguistic root wer from which also emerge the words inward, versatile and weird. Clearly your self-worth is changing and while upcoming events may seem to befall you and be a little inwardly weird, I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy with the results.

Note, The Oracle is a random selection from the Eric Francis horoscope archives. Each day we publish one entry from among the 10,000 in our database. It’s a little slice of horoscope history — but chosen by our Oracle program, which always speaks to the present moment. New horoscopes are published each Friday plus twice a month in Planet Waves subscriber edition and Planet Waves Light. And for your 2012 annual reading, you’ll find Revolution. Revelation. Reality Check.

Tandem – Venus in Taurus, Mercury in Aries

The only two planets closer to Sun than Earth have started our week in tandem. Venus entered its rulership in Taurus earlier today and will consummate the ingress with a sextile to Neptune tomorrow. Mercury conjoined Uranus in fiery Aries this morning and is a day away from linking up with nearby Vesta. The combined activity of Mercury and Venus symbolize an inner and outer environment rich in energetic possibility but needing your conscious contribution to achieve its potential within your life.

Astrology by Len Wallick

The potential of your inner and outer worlds right now is in its sheer energy. The question is whether that energy will be wasted in reaction, or function as a stimulation to creativity. Mercury is well positioned to support a stimulated mind.

In fact, Mercury in Aries is a stimulated mind. The quality of Aries is cardinal, which confers a sense of initiative. The element of Aries is fire, which easy to understand as something light and energetic. As you have probably noticed already, this morning’s conjunction of Mercury with Uranus takes the mental quickening up a notch. That’s because Mercury and Uranus share a symbolic connection with electricity and sudden events. Your simply reacting to a rapid pace and galvanizing occurrences will accomplish little more than burning you out. Vesta is on the scene in Aries to help with managing the inner combustion.

Vesta’s discovery chart for March 29, 1807 has both Sun and Mercury in Aries, so the origin of its identity in our consciousness (Sun) and its function in our thinking (Mercury) resonates with Vesta’s current placement in the cardinal fire. In addition, Vesta’s very name has a legendary connection with the management and conservation of vital energy within a structure. That’s because the Roman temple to Vesta was where a sacred flame was kept and cared for, symbolic of the hearth flame, which for most of human history has represented home on Earth.

Sunday I spent the day in Connecticut, interviewing four graduates of SUNY New Paltz who lived in the dioxin dorms between 1992 and 1994. This is a one hour program that includes an introduction to the issue in the first few minutes, before the interviews begin.

The story relates to some college dormitories that were contaminated by PCBs and dioxins in 1991, and which were reoccupied without proper testing or cleanup. While on one level this is a story about one incident on one campus, in truth New Paltz is everywhere.

If you would like to read additional background, here is a recent article, called “Who Will Tell Students About the Dioxin Dorms?” Here is a website devoted to the issue, and a blog that updates fairly regularly.

If you know people in the media, such as editors to radio hosts to bloggers, please send them this page. Thank you.

Here is your program in the old player, where you’ll find the full archives and a downloadable zip file.

Lovingly,
Eric Francis

Mercury-Uranus in Aries: Bright Ideas, Version 1.0

You can expect your mental landscape to zing and your emotional waters to bubble this week, along with a beautiful opportunity to ground everything so you don’t feel off center. On the roster: Mercury conjunct Uranus in Aries; the ingress of Venus into Taurus; and finally on Thursday, the Virgo Full Moon.

This is what a conjunction looks like -- Mercury and Uranus have the same number value (3 degrees and 25 minutes). That is near Vesta, which says: if you think of something smart, the idea counts for a lot -- and then you need to devote yourself to following through.

The Moon — currently in Leo, as of Sunday — is waxing toward the full phase. Because the Sun is in Pisces, the Moon-Sun opposition (also called a Full Moon) will be in Virgo. That will happen Thursday at 4:39 am EST. As with most Full Moons, this translates into a culmination of energy and possibly tension, since it is an opposition of the Sun and Moon. It’s the Moon phase when our emotions and interpersonal situations can tend to feel the most polarized, like we’re at opposite ends of any given situation or emotional spectrum, and we’re pulling whatever material is connecting us to each other into some tension. But this can be useful; the Full Moon is a time to resolve situations that seemed stuck. It can be a great creative time, though many have some difficulty sleeping with all the vibes in the air.

Currently, retrograde Mars in Virgo is just a little past its opposition with the Pisces Sun, and the Virgo Moon conjoins Virgo Mars the day before the Full Moon. So Mars is in the mix, adding some edge and heat to the buildup this week. Be aware in the next few days of any tendency to turn on yourself if your emotions get the better of you. Watch out for that strange thing called ‘passive aggression’, which is really veiled aggression. Judging yourself won’t get you anywhere productive, though one way you might know you’re doing that is if you’re angry at others (that’s the nature of an opposition — we can see the obstacle as being outside of ourselves).

Noticing the tendency to judgment, anger or projection (should these arise) and taking time to follow it in to its roots could yield some useful information. It could reveal ways you may be prone to cutting yourself off from full emotional expression and self-understanding. This lunation blends the mental realm of Virgo with the emotional realm of Pisces. They’re not as different as we think, especially now.

Astrology Today: Oracle for Monday, March 5, 2012

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Scorpio weekly for Oct. 18, 2001.

Astrology Blog: The Oracle, Weekly Horoscopes, Monthly Horoscopes.

You’re inclined toward some truly monumental moments of doubt this week, but beyond the veil of your existential questioning is a faith so powerful that it could, indeed, move mountains. Have you got any mountains to move? It looks like it. Heavy objets are best handled with levers. Invest your time carefully designing a few of those and you’ll have a lot less work when the time comes to make one particular arrangement that will, in the end, strike you and those in your world as nothing less than a miracle.

The Weekend Tarot Reading — Sunday, March 4, 2012

By Sarah Taylor

Keep going; keep applying yourself; keep building on what you’ve got. It might feel like an uphill struggle at times, and as if you are working with little or no support, but you are making progress. Soon you’ll see results. When you do, there is a benefit to be had in remaining conscious of what it took for you to get there, and of any growing sense of accountability that you have been nurturing during this process. We live in a world of polarity, where every event is an adjustment towards balance. Treading a path of temperance will help to keep things on course.

Three of Pentacles, Seven of Pentacles, Nine of Cups -- RWS Tarot deck.

The last weekend tarot reading felt like it was taking place at a soul level — what C G Jung would refer to as a pivotal point in our experience of individuation, where we are presented with an opportunity for self-definition that frees us from something that no longer feels authentic to our individual development. It was ‘big-picture’ tarot.

This week’s reading is concerned with the detail of day-to-day living: three minor arcana cards are more practical in nature, the ways in which we express our ‘macro’ selves in the ‘micro’ of our outer lives.

The Three of Pentacles has come up recently in a Weekend Tarot Reading — on the 12th February — so it might be an idea to see if there is anything going on in your life right now that links back to events around three weeks ago. Because something is starting to bear fruit, even if it is early days in a process that is ongoing and which is set to evolve over the ensuing months or years.

Astrology Today: Oracle for Sunday, March 4, 2012

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Capricorn monthly for Dec. 4, 2006.

Astrology Blog: The Oracle, Weekly Horoscopes, Monthly Horoscopes.

These days it seems your physical setting verges on irrelevant; your inner world is so illuminated, you could light the way through a deep forest on a rainy night. You bring your home with you, wherever you go, and people can feel it. I suggest you take it with you consciously, wherever you may go this month — and by every indication, you long to travel far and wide, but it’s all the same place. The words of the poet John Gardner come to mind: “If my heart lies here, within my breast, light it up! / And I’ll invite you in as my first guest.”

How to Create FOMO* in Five Easy Steps

*(Fear of Missing Out)

By Maria Padhila

How many times have you settled down on a Saturday evening for a fun game of Sex Toy Bingo with your triad, only to sigh to yourself, “Wow, this would be a lot more fun if there were more than just the three of us!”

Poly Paradise at Burning Man. Photo by Eric.

Poly Paradise at Burning Man. Photo by Eric.

Well, maybe you never have. But you’ve probably had analogous thoughts sometimes. You’ve wondered why things couldn’t be a little more fun, or you can’t meet the people who really like the things you do, maybe.

And to tell you the truth, it’s never happened to me, either. Mostly because I just made up the whole Sex Toy Bingo thing. I don’t think such a game really exists, but it sounds like it would be fun, doesn’t it?

Maybe I should make it up myself, if it sounds so fun — and then find some people to play it with. And that is my point — if you want a poly gathering that fits your needs and desires, make one. Like Burners and Pagans and a bunch of similar intersecting groups, polyamorous people not only respect the Do It Yourself ethic but do it. Don’t say: “I wish there were some poly people around here to play with, but there aren’t any…” Even on the lone prairie, they are out there. And you can rope them in with the right events.

This doesn’t mean that if you’re out there on your lonesome, whether it’s in the middle of East Hicksville or in the middle of a city, and you’re curious about polyamory, that you should put up a bunch of flyers with your address inviting people to a potluck. That might not work — or it might work too well.
