The Weekend Tarot Reading — Sunday, April 1, 2012

By Sarah Taylor

There is a point of choice coming up. It is time to choose carefully — and you can: you have access to a mature, heart-based wisdom. It is time to situate yourself in loving authority, and as one door closes, so another will open.

King of Cups, Seven of Cups, The World -- RWS Tarot deck.

King of Cups, Seven of Cups, The World from the Rider-Waite Smith Tarot deck. Both minor arcana cards are Cups, which means that the reading is situated in the realm of feeling. The presence of a major arcana card -- and notably the 21st card -- means that this reading is concerned with evolution at a soul level. Click on the image for a larger version.

This feels like a beautiful reading. The options that it presents to us hold their fair share of perils, yes, but nothing that we cannot overcome. There are going to be choices that are no-brainers; some that look good at first glance but hide their true colours below the surface; and others that might call us into the unknown — perhaps more than we are used to or comfortable with.

The key here is to use our hearts. This is not a time for analysis that remains solely in the head. This is not something that we can work out with a piece of paper and two columns. We need to engage with our feelings, indicated by the King of Cups.

The King’s throne rises out of the waves, solid and enduring as if it is firmly anchored in the seabed. He embodies the collective emotional experiences of the preceding Cups cards — from love to nostalgia, heartbreak to joy. He knows and understands the depths of the emotional currents that lie around him, and yet — like the Queen — remains distinct from them. He has assumed authority over his feelings and his life. But this is not a hard-hearted authority: his posture is one of openness and has a certain relaxed air to it. He doesn’t grasp the accoutrements of his rule — the simple, unadorned Cup, the equally unassuming sceptre — but rests them on his knee and the arm of his throne respectively. There is nothing that needs controlling or fighting. The card speaks of a sense of ease. The waves are in motion — there is no stagnation here — but they are supportive of the life on and under them: the fish can swim freely, the ship is in full sail.
[Authority, power, and balance: the Kings in tarot, October 12, 2011]

The King of Cups refers to our emotional natures when we align them with the flow of life. By doing this, we are fully in our feelings, but we are not dominated by them, nor do they dominate us; we do not shy from them, nor are we engulfed by them. There is a foundation to our experience that is unchanging, even while waves might lap, undulate, and crash around us.

A Steady Diet of NRE

By Maria Padhila

I need to drop 10 pounds. Could I just fall in love, please?

You know you’ve thought that once or twice. New love — new relationship energy, as many both in and out of polyamory call it — is one fine drug. It takes the place of food and sleep (and common sense).

Poly Paradise at Burning Man. Photo by Eric.

Poly Paradise at Burning Man. Photo by Eric.

A speaker at the Loving More conference called it “the fuzzy pink stupids.” You may choose between NRE and FPS, depending on your mood. NRE sounds like “energy,” and FPS sounds like a curse. Actually, it might depend which side of the love you’re on for the terms you choose. If you’re in it or enjoying it, even the secondary side effects, it’s energy. But if it’s making your partner impossible to live with, then get out the F-word.

Everything about the New Other is so fascinating and exciting. You want to know everything. That coffee cup they use! Their adorable slightly torn underwear! Their conflict with their fifth-grade teacher! You talk about these things for hours, if you can get hours. And then you go to your other partner, bubbling over with the conversations, and he or she looks at you like you’ve lost your mind and says: “My goodness, I never knew until this very moment that you were even remotely interested in NASCAR.”

One way you know love is going beyond this stage is that the trivia of the Other still retains some of this glow. You still care. How you know it’s not is that everything starts to annoy you. A man’s snores are music one day; and then you can’t even stand the way he breathes. Been there, but only once or twice. Most of the time, my infatuations transform into true love and reality, the kind that will last forever if no one tries hard to kill it.

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Pisces daily for May 1, 2006

Astrology Blog: The Oracle, Weekly Horoscopes, Monthly Horoscopes.

The sky has been hot, hot, hot for Pisces lately. But since this is the sign of, ‘There’s no such thing as too much,’ I trust you’ve been handling it day by day and really making the most of your experience. Over the past few days you have turned a corner, resolving a troubling emotional or psychological issue that has gradually taken more of your time and energy. You can trust this. Yes, you’ve had to let go of something or someone, but what you get in exchange is the privilege of making important choices in your life, which is an honour you only get to keep if you use it.

Note, The Oracle is a random selection from the Eric Francis horoscope archives. Each day we publish one entry from among the 10,000 in our database. It’s a little slice of horoscope history — but chosen by our Oracle program, which always speaks to the present moment. Regarding Conflict

By Judith Gayle | Political Waves

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside dreams; who looks inside awakes.”

– Carl Jung

It was easy to get lost in the cacophony of voices this week, crying their pain and grief about race, law, finance: all real problems of real people, things we can relate to now that politics is highly personal. Cable television, talk radio, and the internet all gave voice to outrage and sorrow. The voices were angry, fearful, strident, the political atmosphere supercharged with speculation, the talking heads exploding with impassioned opinion.

Political Blog, News, Information, Astrological Perspective.

It was difficult not to lose patience with some of these people, seemingly unaware of or unconcerned with their obvious hypocrisy and paranoia. I suspect some of them are like drunks at a dinner party, they won’t be embarrassed about wearing the lampshades on their heads until they sober up and realize someone took pictures. Others are just con men, manipulating public emotion for their own benefit and profit.

As if the worst of Mars-Neptune delusion was at play on my television screen, I thanked my lucky stars that Mars and Mercury were both retro, slowing things down just a bit. Believe it or not, we’re enjoying a brief lull in the 2012 energy right now. It’s a good time to gather our wits about us; we’ll need them this year if we’re to keep solid footing. This is a time of discovery, of rooting out our darkest fears, refreshing our highest aspirations; of deciding who we are and who we want to become. A strong heart and a clear head are required, or we’ll all end up like the JetBlue pilot whose cheese so publicly slipped off his cracker. If we don’t keep tabs on this stuff, it will sneak up behind us to bite us on the butt.

New Issue Being Sent to Subscribers

New issue of Planet Waves

If you’ve arrived here via the links in the subscriber issue, this is also the discussion page for the edition.

If you’re not a subscriber, what are you waiting for? We have a painless way to try it out: a one-month free trial subscription, which you can sign up for here. You’ll still get access to today’s issue, which covers a lot of ground in addition to the chart for the shooting of Trayvon Martin. There’s a lot of collective material coming up from the depths in these days — so much, in fact, that some events that would ordinarily be big news have barely gotten a nod. But regardless of where the media focus is, the astrology is all about where it all intersects with our individual dives right now — and what we bring with us to the surface.

You can also read today’s issue by purchasing it individually here. It includes Eric’s horoscopes for all 12 signs — like no others you’ll read anywhere else — and a selection of astro-news briefs.

Weekend Astrology: One Thing Leads to Another

Today is the first quarter Moon, which is when the Sun and Moon form a right angle to each other from our perspective here on Earth. In this case, that is happening from Cancer (Moon) to Aries (Sun). It’s a time to take stock of whatever you may have initiated during last week’s New Moon in Aries and gently guide it forward.

This is a natural turning point, which will be accentuated Friday by the Moon’s square to Uranus and opposition to Pluto. If you’re feeling any inner tension, that is the signal to get a little perspective on where it’s coming from and then use it as leverage if you have any decisions to make.

One reason to be gentle with this forward movement is that Mercury finally stations direct next week, on Wednesday, April 4. This means that Sunday into Monday begins the ‘storm’ phase of Mercury retrograde, which happens toward either end of the cycle.

It’s a time when potentially mixed signals – and the reactions that ensue – can be especially tricky to navigate. Mercury is in late Pisces for this station direct, so the watery storm metaphor is especially apt. Keep your ears open for intuitive messages, though you you might want to pause on taking any irreversible action on important matters prior to the station direct Wednesday morning. Action would include speaking in anger or making promises you’re not sure you can keep.

Astrology Today: Oracle for Friday, March 30, 2012

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Taurus monthly for Oct. 1, 2005

Astrology Blog: The Oracle, Weekly Horoscopes, Monthly Horoscopes.

The silver lining to what may feel like an unmitigated upheaval is that you’re now getting to balance out your priorities. It’s only because your homing instincts are so strong that you’re feeling this as something more tumultuous than it is. You have an equally potent affinity for change and for living fully in the state of being different than others. If the events now unfolding are demonstrating nothing else, it’s that you are your own distinct individual, and one who can stand face to face with the world. You know that the roles or positions could just as easily be reversed. You can see some aspect of yourself in everyone — even if someone close to you is having difficulty doing the same thing. Sooner or later, they will learn, and if one of you feels reluctant to let go of the past, perhaps focus on this quality of mutual acknowledgement.

Note, The Oracle is a random selection from the Eric Francis horoscope archives. Each day we publish one entry from among the 10,000 in our database. Tarot: a credo-in-progress

By Sarah Taylor

Over the years that I have been working with tarot cards personally and professionally, I have begun to formulate in my own heart and mind a set of personal truths about the cards.

Ace of Swords - RWS Tarot deck.

The Ace of Swords from the Rider-Waite Smith Tarot deck. Swords are associated with thought; the Ace specifically symbolises, among other things, the potential for insight.

In essence, I have come to see these truths as a ‘credo’, the Latin word for “I believe.” Rather than a statement of fact, a credo is therefore a statement of belief. I cannot prove what I believe to be true about tarot, apart from its demonstrating to me time and again that it works. Nor would I want to foist my beliefs about tarot on anyone else, given that what is true for me isn’t necessarily true for the next person: one man’s tool of divination is another woman’s load of hooey. And fair enough: if we don’t have freedom of belief, then we have nothing (or so I believe!).

Moreover, those beliefs have been, and continue to be, subject to change, reinvestigation and redefinition as my work with tarot and my own ideas about divination — and life, really — have evolved. But I thought I’d share with you what it is that I’ve come up with. So far. Feel free to agree, disagree and add your views. I’d love to hear what you have to say.

Tarot tells it how it is

I believe the cards we get in any reading are 100% accurate, although this statement comes with a few qualifications:

#1: It is the translation that creates inaccuracies — especially when we are reading for ourselves, and/or when emotions, wishes and expectations start to come into play and are not adequately corralled.

#2: Sometimes ‘telling it how it is’ means drawing our attention to something more important than the current subject of the reading. When this happens, the cards tend to communicate in a bolder tone. Think of it as having a conversation with someone where they need to raise their voice, or wave their hand, in order to be heard: you know who it is that you’re speaking to; it’s just that they have to be more demonstrative because you aren’t quite expecting what it is that they’re saying.

At other times, the cards play what I often refer to as silly buggers: they question the question itself. This happens when we do a reading for the second, third, fourth time in a row because we don’t like the response we’re getting. The cards meet our desperation by becoming increasingly dramatic to mirror the desperation back to us. At this point I feel it’s counter-productive to read the meanings of each card literally because what they’re really saying is a collective “Enough already!” in the best way they know how.

Half Full In Fact — First Quarter Moon

When it reaches its first quarter tomorrow, the Cancer Moon will appear in the sky as half-illuminated, half dark. The phase is referred to as a quarter instead of a half because Luna will be in the first quarter of its orbit around Earth as measured from the New Moon on March 22. In this particular case, however, the appearance will have its own symbolic meaning. In the context of astrology, the Moon in its first quarter will be forming an aspect called a cardinal T-square with the Aries Sun and Pluto in Capricorn while halfway between the new and full lunar phases.

Astrology by Len Wallick

Tomorrow’s first quarter Moon implies an opportunity to work with the astrology and perceive the progress of your own initiatives, efforts and aspirations as the Moon really is, in fact, half full. Moon’s appearance during its first quarter is the result of our position in relationship to the luminaries, Sun and Moon. Weather permitting, you will see Luna rise at midday, overhead at sunset and setting around midnight.

In other words, from your perspective, the luminaries will be 90 degrees apart in the sky, and you will see half of the lunar surface lit by the Sun and half of what is not. The visage of a Moon half light and half dark translates to your life as something halfway towards completion. The visual perception of a right angle between the luminaries in the sky translates to astrology as a square aspect.

In astrology, objects forming a square are also 90 degrees apart on the zodiac wheel, occupying different signs that share the same quality — cardinal, fixed or mutable. In general, a square aspect symbolizes and frequently corresponds in reality to a tension you feel on the inside. That’s how squares come to have a bad reputation. In all cases, resolving that tension requires you to take some action. In order to take the appropriate action you have to consciously reject a square’s bad reputation and replace it with another perspective.

History in Slow Motion (Or: Who Has the Power?)

Today is this week’s big day: the Aries Sun square Pluto in Capricorn. Both Uranus and Pluto are activating the Aries Point – which the Sun has been lighting up like a Christmas tree — and ALL of the current news is “personal/political” on a scale that few could have dreamed up.

Pluto -- Hades, by Agostino Carracci, 1592. Galleria e Museo Estense, Modena, Italy.

Take, for example, a sampling of headlines from Democracy Now! yesterday:

•    The Supreme Court of the U.S. held its final day of an historic session on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. An issue at the heart of the healthcare law, it’s the individual mandate requiring most people buy health insurance by 2014 or pay a tax penalty;

•    Despite a U.N. brokered cease-fire in Syria, dozens of people were killed Tuesday in the continuation of violence that began with the Arab Spring uprisings over a year ago (our first real taste of Uranus-Pluto), with over 9,000 dead in that country so far;

•    Scientists are warning that damage from global warming will become irreversible, and that this is “the critical decade” for curbing it;

•    The Arizona State Senate has voted to ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy (six other states have passed similar laws in the last two years);

•    Environmental activist Tim DeChristopher, currently serving a two-year sentence for posing as a bidder to prevent oil and gas drilling on thousands of acres of public land, was recently removed from a minimum security prison ward into an isolated cell where his ability to communicate with the outside world and even read books is restricted;
