I was just corresponding with someone who spends a lot of time up near the Arctic ice and I was reminded of the film Nine Songs by Michael Winterbottom. Then I remembered that I reviewed that film in 2005, looked a found it on Planet Waves. The review is called Is This About You? It’s our old page style, sans date — I recall this was in early 2005; I was living in Paris and I recall having my first digital camera with me — that would put it some time after Jan. 20, 2005.

Eric:
I remember your article from those years ago; in fact, have never forgotten it – just re-read and here is the poignant moment for me:
“Am I saying the film was controversial because it’s about a woman who wants, likes and asks for sex? Am I saying the controversy is because that sex is depicted as something other than meaningless? Am I saying the film is controversial because it depicts sex in a wholly life-affirming way?”
Bingo – the reason I personally have such “trouble” finding a meaningful relationship is all wrapped up in exactly this; that is, in my being an enormously erotic and sexual being who thinks that life itself is erotic and sexual (that’s a big “duh” to me) and that it is OK for a woman to Be ‘this way’. Thank you for reviewing your review and bringing this point into the light again today.
My current work seems to be flowing down this path of love and sex and intimacy and the fear and taboo that surrounds it (can’t even imagine why ,,, lol.)
Thanks and Love,
Linda
