“Are we doomed…. ” We may be doomed to repeat our mistakes as a species. Namely, the mistake of playing with the pride and hubris of innovation/progress. In the particular case of Nuclear energy, or any technology or idea, it could be said as we innovate we fall in love with ourselves as a species a little more. Innovations/ideas can become a mirror and every nation/individual wants to ensure it’s fully dressed.
It seems that an idea may be reaching its end and with this end the mirror cracks. While many of us may not agree with Nuclear energy, it may be worthwhile to meditate on the impact of that crack in our personal mirrors. The results could be surprising.
The mirror cracking may enable us to reflect on how we got to this point in time as a species, and how we can better understand the process and nature of evolution as we head into the next cycle. What will we do if we survive?

I suggest reading ‘Buddhism without beliefs’ by Stephen Batchelor. Your question comes from a place of fear. And we’re all afraid in one way or another – that’s part of being human. One way of overcoming fear is to address it. Think you’ll find answers (indirectly) in this great little book.

“We want the world and we want it NOW!” Well baby, you’ve got the world, so what are you going to do with it??
xx
What the fuck does “doomed” mean anyway? Death is a given, so pull your fuckin’ head out and start living. No, we are not “doomed”. And frankly, if you can’t find meaning in life, it’s because you’re not looking. Open your eyes and see the Glory! It’s everywhere – blue skies, rain, little leaves, and blades of grass, and flowers and lizards and birds and butterflies and puppies and kittens and old nags and decrepit old things that were once loved (and still are by me), and stars and the sun and the moon…you geddit… How can you say “we’re doomed” when you have all this?? What the fuck more do you want?
..Alright Medea, I’ll see your doom and gloom and raise you some awareness. First of all, you misunderstood Kyla’s statement through shear egocentrism.. although, you’ve got it centered with the free-will aspect of your commentary, but you rush in to a linear-mundane attribution of ‘conditional reality’ (bio-forms that develop on this plane, in this time..). We’ve already UNDERSTOOD that Extinction ‘Comes and Goes,.. Again, and Again, and Again, and Again, and Again…’).
..SO FIGHT THAT FUCKING CANCER THAT’S GNAWING AT THE BACK OF YOUR MIND AND GET OUT THERE AND PUSH THIS MOTHER FUCKER THROUGH!!!! DO IT, DAMN IT!!!!
LET’S GO!!!
and LOVE!!!! I LOVE YOU!! IF YOU CAN’T FEEL THIS AS A THING.. THEN YOU NEED A FUCKING HUG!!!
The context of the reader’s comment was an update on the 6.5 quake which occurred in Japan late yesterday, in which case ‘doomed’ could refer to a fear of Mother Nature or Acts of God, of which many terrifying forecasts have been made in the runup to 2012.
Despite the negative predictions of some astrologers, many new ager elites and not a few religious groups, personally, I believe that as long as humans exercise their free will, nothing is written. On the other hand, I believe that notions such as Kyla expressed –
‘The complexity that we are is simply not able to be just, like, trashed.’
are naive in the extreme. The most contiguously long-existing creatures on this planet are sharks, crocodiles and cockroaches. I do not for a moment delude myself that the continued existence of my species is guaranteed because of our ‘complexity’. Compared to no life, an amoeba is complex. I believe that comparisons of our species to cancer – a ravaging disease that consumes its host – are not unfounded.
And for sure I know that the clock is winding down on this little experiment called humans unless we get up off our sorry asses and do something about it right now. (Yesterday would have been better but we may still stand a chance.) And BTW, folks, love is not a noun, no matter how good it feels to say it.
Depends on what you mean by doomed. You are going to die, it’s just a matter of when. You have, in all likelihood, died many times in the past and you will die many times in the future. The ability to get information quickly from all over the world is double edged. It lets us help our brethren in distant places, but it gives us a sense of constant disaster and suffering because that is what is considered news. No one reports on the great meal and fun times you had with friends last week, except on Twitter and facebook, which may be part of the reason for the success of those services.
Consider this: husbands beating wives used to be called life, not a crime. The British Parliament had to pass laws in 19th century to stop the practice of forcing small children to climb into chimneys to clean them. No universal education. Smallpox killed hundreds of millions, deaths from a lack of clean water and fresh food were constant, and women had a substantially shorter lifespan than men due to appalling rates of death in childbirth. No antibiotics either. Sinus abscesses were so bad that eyes could be displaced, and bladder infections might kill. Abolitionists were dangerous radicals and slavery acceptable.
I could go on, but you get the point. These problems were solved by caring people who were willing to fight the status quo in order to better the lives of their fellow humans. We are going in the right direction, we just need to make some decisions about safer ways to get there, and move beyond the highest bidder method of lawmaking.
no dice. NO.. NOT an option..
I agree that “doom” is a thoughtform. It lives in place of collapse and overwhelm without a light-boat of beyond mainstream consciousness. The upside of “doom” is that to even claim it suggests its opposite — “not doom” — and it is from that place where possibility can launch. We must reach beyond our small little worlds into Indra’s net for support, enlightenment and evolution. Doom is a fear-based punctuation point. Don’t stop there . . . the flow continues beyond that. Rest up and then keep reading.
Bloody better not be!
I’m not ready to give up on these things that I love
There is nothing more rewarding than dressing up to the nines over the weekend and catching up with a friend or two or five, for conversation.. and laughter..oh god and coffee!
..Take it to Heart that there are many worlds, and many more Universes that expand beyond linear lifetimes. Even if this world falls.. “I’ll meet you in the next one, and don’t be late” Jimi Hendrix-Are You Experienced
..Drop fear (the lightning bolt comes at any time), Life is for Living. Death is a beautiful transition to LIFE,.. (I shit you not, I can’t prove it.. I just ‘know’ it!)
Don’t take the burden of the world on your shoulders, the best thing you can do is be true and kind to yourself, and all will be well. (You are the Universe,.. You Are God/Goddess.)
With Love and Honour,
a point within you
I totally agree. There is nothing more evident, to me personally, than the way that this Universe makes sense and has a fundamental Intelligence embedded within every manifestation. The complexity that we are is simply not able to be just, like, trashed.
But even if this is not evident, we each one have a choice in every moment how we will behave, what we will serve, what we will stand for and live for and express. That choice is our power and if we take hold of it we can do quite amazing things in the face of seeming impossible odds.
There is a LOT of collective thoughtform message stream out there that makes for that feeling of doom. I think it is a lie, that feeling, but even if it is not a lie, it robs us of creative impulse. Creative impulse is our human birthright and we’d better claim and own it actively now.
The very fact that we do NOT know outcomes itself is our power. Right now, the choice is with us, each “right now”. Knowing outcomes would rob us of that.
Well, as your very good writer Judith Gayle might say, you don’t get to know the answer to that question.
None of us do.
But the only humane, sane way to live is to act as if you do know the answer and that answer is no, we are not doomed. We are destined to survive, and destined to evolve into some kind of higher life form, one that is worthy of this beautiful and magnificant planet.
