Meanwhile, in Portland, Maine…

Published by under Photo of the Day

Most of the rain has tracked inland, leaving high winds on the coast -- perfect conditions for an energizing walk, complete with rescued balloon on the East End beach, Portland. The high winds are expected to continue through the night. Combined with soggy ground and leaves, this is resulting in a large number of fallen trees -- though less so on the coast. The Weekend Tarot Reading — Sunday, August 28, 2011

Published by under Reading Tarot

Editor’s Note: If you want to experiment with tarot cards and don’t have any, we provide a free tarot spread generator using the Celtic Wings spread, which is based on the traditional Celtic Cross spread. This article explains how to use the spread. You can visit Sarah’s website here. –efc

By Sarah Taylor

Two things are calling for your attention, your energy, your commitment. One of them feels settled, apparently undemanding — offered up as it is to you — and immediate; the other involves risk, hard work, careful nurturing, with no guarantees. It is time to use your heart.

Knight of Pentacles, Three of Swords, Seven of Pentacles - RWS Tarot deck.

Knight of Pentacles, Three of Swords, Seven of Pentacles from the Rider-Waite Smith Tarot deck. Click on the image for a larger version.

This week’s reading is about what is manifesting in your physical world, and how you are reacting to that. In it, two Pentacles cards — the Knight and the Seven — sit either side of the Three of Swords, and instead of working with the cards in linear fashion, I feel compelled to start at the centre and move outwards to each flanking card, and then to move back from them to the centre. This is a process of moving away from intellectual analysis and into a place of intuitive enquiry; it isn’t the swords that I see as dominant in the Three of Swords, but the heart.

Your heart is the heart in the middle, feeling torn by options that seem to put you in a state of conflict with yourself: the sword on the left (the Knight of Pentacles) crosses the sword on the right (the Seven of Pentacles), and both are met by the sword in the centre — you in the midst of it all.

The Knight seems to be offering you something that simply requires you to reach out and accept it. Either that, or he is putting something on show for your perusal. It seems like a straightforward transaction, and it seems safe. But I am drawn to the armour of the Knight himself, and particularly the spur on the Knight’s heel. Why is he so heavily fortified? Does the offering come with a condition, or a price? More importantly for me: who does it really belong to? What is yours? What is someone else’s?

In the eye of the storm

Published by under Daily Astrology Blog

Dominick's Cafe was the only place open in uptown Kingston the morning of the hurricane, despite leaks in the ceiling caused by partially complete work on the Pike Plan Canopy (see photo below). Picture by Eric.

We’re now under the eye of the storm — it’s bright and sunny outside, not a drop of rain falling. The storm is comma-shaped, and the big end has passed over most of New York State. There was some rain (didn’t seem like a lot, compared to normal summer storms) and a bit of wind.

Weather update – just went out again. It’s not really sunny, just very bright overcast, with a light mist falling, and a slight breeze. Here are some photos of New York City from last night, gathered by the Daily Mail in England, on a link that Gary just sent over.

Astrology Today: Oracle for Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011

Published by under Daily Astrology Blog

Today’s Oracle takes us to the Scorpio monthly of May 1, 2005.

The Oracle.

Relationships are nothing if they are not functional. That is the test. Functional means the experience of loving and relating fits in your life and your life fits into it. You can look at the current era as a time of experimentation or observation. You are under some of the best astrology in quite some time supporting harmonious coexistence and sharing of deep emotions. What you may notice as the month progresses is that a light touch serves you well. Bring your feelings doubts and contradictions up to the level of normal conversation. Be honest about the places within you that seem to make no sense or which reveal that you have deeper motives. Ask those close to you about these things as well. If there was ever a time for the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth to work brilliantly it’s right now.

Are you looking for an extra clue? That’s what astrology is for. New horoscopes are published weekly plus twice a month in Planet Waves subscriber edition and Planet Waves Light. And for your annual reading, check out Light Bridge.

Up a creek, with three to paddle

Published by under Polyamory

By Maria Padhila

I had a very strange week recently, and that was before the earthquake.

Poly Paradise at Burning Man. Photo by Eric.

I was in bed when the earthquake hit, by the way — alone. And no, didn’t have anything going on — I was trying to take a nap. I wanted to meditate on what I was learning about receiving and what was happening to my body and some big aspects coming up that were going to activate my scary Mars-Saturn square. I just needed a little time. I’d only gotten out of the hospital a week before, and I was trying to sneak an hour in the middle of the day to just lie down and rest, and what happens? Earthquake. Damn.

Maybe I’d better back up. Isaac and I had been traveling for weeks, ending with picking up our daughter from one group of relatives, going to visit another group of relatives, and then having a long drive, a short camp, and a day of tubing on a river in the mountains with a large group. Fun, right?

But I was feeling bitchy and cranky and ill. The easy drift in the sunshine, with a few tiny whitewater passages, that this tubing trip was supposed to be turned into a battle without a paddle in the face of a headwind and spitty bursts from gray clouds. Just trying to get into the current was a fight. We couldn’t hold Tobi’s tube and paddle at the same time, so we rigged lines out of Chris’s bandana and t-shirt and my sports bra, which I struggled off under my tank top, while trying not to flip the tube. Our little Redneck Yacht Club flotilla barely moved, even with Isaac’s strong paddling from the front and Chris kicking from the back. In the middle with Tobi, all I could do was paddle with one hand. Even in my frustration, I couldn’t help laughing at the picture we made: “This is not a metaphor!” I proclaimed to the sky.

Supernova in the Pinwheel Galaxy

Supernovae represent the violent explosions of massive stars which have reached the end of their life-cycle. The one indicated by the black tick marks above was photographed Aug. 26 from Athens. It was discovered Aug. 24. This reverse monochrome image shows the supernova in the familiar Pinwheel Galaxy, a.k.a. Messier 101 or NGC 5457.

A supernova is a massive explosion where the bulk of a star’s material is ejected into space and the interstellar medium are characterized with luminosities which easily can exceed that of the host galaxy for a brief period of a few weeks or even months. This ejection of material including heavy elements is both vital and critical for new generations of stars and exoplanets.

Storm Notes – Planet Waves scheduling

Published by under Kingston

Photo: NOAA

Note to Planet Waves Readers:

Our editorial office is located in upstate New York, which is considered to be in the path of Hurricane Irene. We will get some wind and rain up here in the mountains, most likely on Sunday.

Our servers and web guy (all located far from the hurricane’s path) are unlikely to be affected; however, we could potentially lose power here. Should that happen for more than 12 hours, I will head further inland and work from there until power is restored at my home or studio.

Since we post from multiple locations, we will be on our regular schedule for both subscribers and blog content, unless you read otherwise in this space.
