Why Planet Waves?

This week, we’re publishing a series of letters from my Planet Waves co-creators (introduced here). Tonight’s letter is from Carol van Strum. I first met Carol in 1993, when I was in the thick of my work on environmental toxins. Carol had more than 20 years of experience as a dioxin and herbicide citizen activist — and she became my upstream source of corporate documents, my teacher and friend. — efc

Dear Reader:

The question occasionally arises: why a science editor, non-astrologer, chronic trouble-maker, former book reviewer and children’s editor for USA Today, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and other “real” newspapers, should write and edit for Planet Waves?

The answer: it’s fun and immensely satisfying to be associated with the the most, if not the only, subversive astrology site on the planet. (How many astrologers besides Eric have joined in the Yes Men’s escapades?)

Most newspapers traditionally include an astrology section. Eric reverses the tradition: his astrology site includes news ranging from politics, social issues and scientific discoveries to humor and warped justice, backed by fact-checking that puts most major media to shame.

In Walter R. Brooks’s classic Wiggins for President (later retitled Freddy the Politician), Mrs. Wiggins, a cow with a booming laugh and busload of common sense, triumphs over the lies, dirty tricks and disinformation campaigns of “professional” D.C. politicians.

In our day, Planet Waves is the Mrs. Wiggins of the Internet. Eric may not be running for President of the Internet, but Planet Waves can only do what it does with the active support and participation of its members.

You can sign up for a full year of membership with a special $49 offer here (that’s nearly half the usual cost). Even Mrs. Wiggins would say that’s a bargain.

Yours truly,

Carol van Strum

  1. Subversive puts the “sub” in subscribing.

Membership at PW is such a pleasurable subversion to daily tedium.
