Planet Waves FM :: The True Meaning of Solstice

Hello Cousins,

In this edition of Planet Waves FM, I consider the true meaning of solstice and its getting lost amidst all the glitz of the modern holidays. Before that, I describe the beginning of the 14th baktun of the Mayan calendar, and the Full Moon in the sign Cancer that happens early Friday.

Then I’m joined by two guests — my niece Josie Coppolino as well as my friend Beth Bagner, for the discussion about the holidays, family dynamics, and who wants to be at home and who wants to be around others. This is a fun, longish program designed for those who happen to be at home in front of their computer, well, right around now.

Note, the Moon is slow these days — not moving as fast as I thought.

Here is your program in the Old Player. Note, you can download a compressed file of the program on the Old Player page, which also includes a full archive of Planet Waves FM going back to 2010. More recent programs are collected in the category listing at the top of the blog frame.

With love,
Eric Francis

  1. Two days after the Solstice on December 21 is Festivus on December 23. Festivus has a core of truth in sarcasm as a welcome alternative to the conspicuous and secular oversaturation of consumption at this time of year. So, “Festivus for the rest us” and a thank you to George Constanza and Seinfeld.

Great podcast, Eric, especially the conversation with Beth and Josie. Thank you for the astrology and astronomy as well social and cultural topics.

Reclaiming the Solstice and other seasonal observations is an important part of spiritual development, at least so for me. Again, thank you, Eric.

  2. Great conversation, I agree with kazaa that I would love to hear more discussions of this type; where real issues come up and real questions are asked. I really appreciate being able to witness this process, as it helps me see the sign posts as I work through my own – especially the current one happening around monogamy and desire and self-limitatations based on my mental projections of others’ expectations. It feels very healthy to participate even vicariously. I totally agree about taking the Solstice back. Thank you and may the warmth in your hearts grow as the sun begins its journey north.

p.s. The song you were referencing I believe is Lithium (at least that’s the one that got into my head when you were talking about it). Fantastic. I’m currently rocking out to Nirvana for the first time in many moons 🙂

  3. A fascinating conversation. Your niece is amazing, articulating sophisticated views about sex and relationships I wish my (middle-aged) peers could begin to grasp. Yet she acquiesces to monogamy, too, which is startling. I totally agree with Eric’s questioning… The cult of monogamy must be the final frontier. Would love to hear more discussions like this. Thank you all for this.
