Megawatts Flowing into Mars Square Chiron

Note to Readers: There will not be an edition of Weekend Tarot today, so I am posting an item from Friday’s subscriber edition of Planet Waves, related to the current Mars-Chiron square. –efc

Tomorrow is the Libra New Moon which I’ll cover in tonight’s Daily Astrology. This happens in an exact opposition to the minor planet Eris. That alignment is at 8:02 am EDT Monday. A few hours later is another unusual aspect — Mars square Chiron. This is connected to the New Moon two ways. One is that Eris is in Aries, which points to Mars because of the Mars-Aries connection; and in mythology, Eris and Ares (the earlier, Greek version of Mars) are siblings. Uranus is also in Aries amping up the New Moon and running additional power through that Mars.

One other point before I describe the Mars-Chiron square: Mars has a lot of additional energy pouring into it from Scorpio, the other Mars-ruled sign — which is currently hosting Saturn and Mercury. Imagine all this energy from Aries and Scorpio flooding into Mars as it makes a square to Chiron.

The square between Mars and Chiron represents two focused, potent forces applying to one another in a high-friction dynamic. Mars is in Sagittarius; Chiron is in Pisces, both being energetic, nervous, mutable signs that are looking for movement. Both are also connected to spiritual matters. With this aspect, it’s as if each pushes on the other with equal force. But it’s not a face-off; it’s a square, which is going to get movement one way or the other. This is a “something’s got to give” aspect, which can manifest as a block or the feeling of ‘holding it in’ before that something gives way.

Mars square Chiron is one of the ultimate ‘stuck’ aspects. People with this natal placement can glow with energy, but often they don’t know what to do with it, or are scared to do anything with it. They can carry so much static charge that your hair stands up with you get near them, but they struggle to discharge the energy.

This can manifest as overt creative and sexual blocks (including in some an odd phobia around sex), and a crisis over how to direct their will — which is complicated by the fact that they carry so much energy. Over time, this aspect can be the foundation for solid integrity, but it can take a while to get there. This can be true of all squares, which can come with the process of going back and forth between one planet and the other until finally integrating the two.

When the event is a mutual aspect (two planets in realtime, contacting one another like Mars and Chiron are now) the back and forth can arrive in the buildup and the moment of choice emerges when the aspect happens.

Now imagine the whole world feeling this way, going through the struggle on a cultural level. This does indeed describe conditions on the planet as they frequently manifest, though the current astrology pulls the whole thing into focus. The New Moon is a potential discharge point for this buildup. If you’re a control freak, there may be the feeling of things going out of control. If you’re flexible and are good at directing your energy, you may feel the ability to manifest extremely high focus, unusual guts and do anything you need to do.

Be aware of your fear level, and do what you can to summon your courage. This combination of aspects is a rare opportunity to shape your life in a conscious way. The warrior power of Mars, Chiron and Eris, combined with the sense of justice provided by Libra, is a magnificent blend of possibilities. Add one other factor of Juno in Sagittarius — the quest for social justice, and relationships that have this as their goal — and we have a moment when it might seem like anything is possible.

  1. Well this explains a lot. My Mars is only 30 deg from Chiron so no “hard” aspect there. My mars is square Neptune and inconjunct Pluto and conjunct Ceres.

It is my husband who has Mars conjunct Chiron (don’t know why astro says so, there’s 10 degrees between them and the ASC between them) in Capricorn. His Chiron is in th 12th H conjunct the ASC and his Mars is in the 1st H conjunct the ASC. Both oppose the moon and Uranus in Cancer in the 7th H. Hmmmmm.

    Thanks for the explanations.

  2. Hey guys! I’ve got natal Mars square Chiron, Saturn opposite Sun. Most of it’s been uphill, backwards, with wind blowing – but a lot of sunshine too. Yeah, you’re right, Hazel – don’t worry about going forwards, Brendan – it’s the backwards and forwards struggle of life that makes us great, it’s staying in present time with all that is (virtually impossible, I know) that keeps us sane.

  3. DivaCarla – perhaps you’re right. I’ve got Mercury conjunct Chiron (thus squaring Mars), and a Chiron/Jupiter square as well. Oh, and throw in a Chiron/Uranus opposition while I’m at it.

There’s this big red square all over my chart…with a lot of non-Chiron squares all over too. What fun, not!

  4. Do we need a support group, y’all? Fine company we are anyway. Let’s show the planet how it is done.

Hmmmm chart view: Neptune square Chiron too. Venus conjunct Chiron, sitting astride, in fact, so She’s square it all as well. I am unravelling everything, little by little. Every liability doubles as a strength, every gift (grand water trine with major planets and my Sun) holds a challenge.

  5. I’ve got Mars, Mercury, Moon and Venus all square Chiron. I’ve always felt frustrated and stuck and I thought, after reading a little about astrology, that it was because I have Neptune square Saturn and that Saturn was smooshing my Neptune. As if Neptune ever would be smooshed. Now I see that it may be that there’s more going on. I like the idea that “over time this can be the foundation for solid integrity”. When I feel that “go THIS way. No, go THAT way. No, stop and think. No, go that OTHER way. Why can’t you do something?”, I’ll think: This is building a foundation, whatever this is, even if it feels like nothing’s happening or like you’re doing it wrong and slow and backwards.

  6. DivaCarla and Jinspace, amen to you both!

That’s at least three of us with the Mars-Chiron square. Fifty three and 2/3 years with it and counting. So many times stymied, so few times going forward, and thus the fears and doubts within for so long.

I will have to carry this with me this week, to have my head in the right place, and to keep going forward this time.

efc – thank you as always. This is so apropos.

  7. Eric – Vis-a-vis my natal chart, you have once again explained with laser-like precision one of the great mysterious challenges of my life. In this case, it’s put a huge knot in my stomach, but a problem pinpointed is a problem that can be solved. A huge thank you.

    DivaCarla – Amen.

  8. Glad to hear it’s not just me. Tuning into water, freeze frame moments smear in the flow of things. Control freak? Usually, but that’s melting along with everything else. Standing around in the park is where it’s at. It’s medicinal, not lazy. Serious. Not standing any ol’ way, but just so; don’t just stand there with your teeth in your mouth said the Bossman; Lost a few to capitalism’s idea of nutrition. Yes, standing in the park breaks all sorts of social codes, but when you’ve got Apophis on the ascendant with Sun and Moon tuning in the hurricanes have to go somewhere. Spinning qi in the chakra tree is one way to do it. Tearing up the roots of hellscapes so they can’t come back rather than taking it out on the surrounding world. You’d be surprised how far back and deep you can hear when you just stop running around and keep paying attention.

Nessus trine my ascendant from Gemini can be transmitting verbal abuse when left untended, but in the way of approaching centaurs that raises awareness I see that Nessus killed Hercules; Hercules is the anti hero of the coming age. He started the war that wounded Chiron and killed most of the centaurs by being a pushy Bossman and making demands instead of listening to the wisdom of elders and the voices of Earth. It was time for that old grudge to die. And so, standing around in the park with hurricanes in my chakras instead of in my behavior; The energy gotta go somewhere.

  9. Thank you Eric. This assessment of Mars square Chiron sheds some light on how my natal Mars-Chiron square has shown up in some of my life struggles and lessons. I am determined that my Saturn return in Scorpio will help me create with this energy rather than be stuck or confused by it. At last.
