Energy and Emphasis — Mars Enters Cancer

Like a dog without a bone, an actor out on loan, riders on the storm.
— The Doors

Mars enters cardinal, watery Cancer Saturday at 9:22 am EDT with an emphasis on energy — your energy. The keyword is energy because that’s what Mars fundamentally is. How you experience the emphasis may be unconventional, and your employment of the energy will probably require innovation because of where Mars will be.

Astrology by Len Wallick

When Mars traverses Cancer (as it does every other year), it opposes Capricorn. Traditional astrology has Mars exalted in Capricorn, meaning it’s comfortable and empowered there.

In the terminology of conventional astrology, the sign opposing a planet’s exaltation is said to be where the planet is “in fall.” An object in fall is considered to be incomplete, impaired, weak and doing without. Nevertheless, this will be no time to write Mars off, nor your own energy.

We do not live in conventional times. Traditional astrology does not provide a complete picture. We are all riders on the storm. To meet the storm’s energy with your own, it will be necessary to be innovative and employ unconventional means to make up for what you have to do without.

Fortunately, the context of this year’s Martian tango through Cancer provides everything your energy needs to improvise and prevail, beginning with Saturday’s ingress.

Immediately upon entering Cancer, Mars will open a sextile to 1992 QB1 at the first degree of Taurus, and flow into a water trine with the asteroid Iris, retrograde at the threshold to Pisces.

Speaking of thresholds, we saw how potent Kuiper Belt object 1992 QB1 is when it crossed the threshold of Taurus on May 17 (or 18th, depending on your time zone), emulating the aftermath of its discovery.

For 62 years after Pluto’s discovery in 1930, most folks thought there was nothing else out there past Neptune, except for astronomer Gerard Kuiper. He suspected there might just be some objects keeping Pluto company. The discovery of 1992 QB1 took us across the threshold. In the decade or so since, literally thousands of small planets have been revealed beyond Neptune, more than Doctor Kuiper dreamed possible.

1992 QB1 was discovered on the first degree of Aries, the “Aries Point” that Eric has written so much about, where the personal and political converge. We have only known of it with an Aries background ever since — until last month. Immediately after 1992 QB1 entered Taurus, your suspicions about how the US Government was keeping your intimate company were verified by Edward Snowden beyond what you had dreamed possible.

To have Mars open up a supportive sextile with 1992 QB1 upon entry to Cancer indicates that some energetic threshold may be available for you. Perhaps it will be enough to get you connected with participating in the unique and unprecedented astrology of our time. That is where asteroid Iris comes in.

Finnish astrologer Kirsti Melto has referred to Iris as “the female counterpart of Mercury”, and it’s true. Iris is a messenger, a bridge, a connection between worlds and ways of thinking. The initial water trine to Iris is a message. It tells us that during its nearly seven week Cancer tenure, Mars will participate meaningfully in a grand water trine (from Neptune in Pisces to Scorponic Saturn to Jupiter’s Cancer exaltation) unprecedented in modern history. Perhaps that participation (and your own) will serve to to bridge The Trine to what Eric has called “the defining aspect of our era.”

What Eric was referring to, of course, is the years-long continuum of the cardinal square from Uranus to Pluto. Mars is in a position to do that because Cancer, in addition to being a water sign like Pisces and Scorpio, is also a cardinal sign like Aries (where Uranus is), Libra and Capricorn (where Pluto presides). Later this month (July 27), Mars will oppose Pluto, and square Uranus (July 31) just as 1992 QB1 is stationing retrograde in an Aries Point combination that looks for all the world like all the world could show up at your door — as Dylan put it, “standing in the clothes that you once wore.”

Being the good host that you are, you will want to be prepared for such a plethora of sartorially suggestive guests. The energy of Mars will be there to help, but not in the traditional places, and not in conventional ways. That’s how you should spend the weekend and next week initiating innovative ways to energize with Mars.

Through connection and support, maybe. Perhaps with water instead of coffee. Or, most of all, by imagining that everything going on in the world really does effect you, and that there is something you can actually do about it. Allow yourself to imagine that we could actually ride the storm out, no longer be “in fall,” and see what that does for your energy. It could happen. With your energy and emphasis in participation, it will.

  1. Good summer vacation Len and the entire team of Planet Waves

I am preparing to leave in the South of the France after having traveled in East. Very soon you read 🙂

  2. Just checked the news. About 3 1/2 hours ago (9:45 pm EDT) the jury reached a decision to acquit Mr. Zimmerman.

  3. be: Thank you very much for both the trial update and how the astrology as described is consistent with that example of events. Perhaps we need to consider asteroid 7 Iris on a more routine basis.

  4. Len, you noted that Mars would trine Iris the messenger today and they would both be sextile to QB1 which could open an energetic threshold. Well, the jurors sent a message (Iris) to the judge in the Zimmerman trial a while ago asking for explanation about “manslaughter”. If Iris is “a bridge, a connection between worlds and ways of thinking” then this was an Iris thing because the jurors are in one world and the rest of us aren’t. But at least we have a clue as to how they are thinking. After all, they didn’t ask about the meaning of acquittal or murder 2 did they?

  5. Chief Niwots Son, and Mia: Thank you for how you gather, and your respective gifts for doing so. Two of the coolest people on the planet, i’ll bet.

  6. Thank you, Len.

It is good to see you wielding your pen.

Chief, I, too, see “all those Saints coming through.” The past few days have been quite extraordinary.

    Love to all,
    Mia

  7. Welcome back, Len. The sense of Mars powering it’s way into the Uranus – Pluto square feels like more energy going into the dissolving process, the change process, the undermining of Empire. And if I read you message to us as individuals accurately, it could be summed up once again by the poet Dylan:

“Look out, all those Saints are coming through…”

  8. wandering_yeti: Well said as only you can say it. You know the Empire as well as anybody i know of. Thank you so very much for sharing that knowledge here.

be: Thank you for be-ing so very kind. Thank you also for the Juno connection, especially as regards it’s timing, its relationship to the nodes, and its interpretation through current events. Finally, thank you again for your mastery of Sibley and the meaning of its transits.

aword: Thank you once again for the perspective through your things personal. You never fail to find within something the rest of us cannot do without (or at least, not do as well without).

    P. Sophia: Thank you for the golden ruminations that never fail to take us a little deeper.

  9. Len,
Once again I find your interesting article here, especially regarding your question of Mars position in Cancer and it’s energy:
“being in the sign opposing a planet’s exaltation is said to be where the planet is “in fall.” An object in fall is considered to be incomplete, impaired, weak and doing without.”
I guess I will have to disagree with the terminology of conventional astrology. Have you read the oracle for today? This was my comment earlier in observation to that post:
“the more uncertain I am feeling around in the dark as these new roots develop and reach out, the more assurance and light leads me from the inside.”

Who ever said it was darkest before the dawn, was right. Just like Gerard Kuiper you say he suspected there was more beyond, perhaps he knew and simply dared to follow his inspiration. He must have ‘intuitively’ felt and dreamed it possible.

If you think about it, it is only in darkness that we are offered the gift and invitation to follow our intuition. I believe we may have this invitation and potential in Mar’s position this weekend. Even though it may look for feel different or feeling not quite comfortable at all, as you say Len, don’t write it off.

In fact the opposition may be the precise time to call that power from A-Cross. A time of bridging true innovation to light and action.

  10. Welcome back, Len, and thanks for the look-see at Iris.

Considering that in my natal chart she sits smack dam on the DC (DC at 11.55 AQ and Iris at 11.58, purty close) I felt the need to take a small second look at her. She’s semi-sextile natal Mars (glad you mentioned him too) who is being transited by Pluto and sextile natal Moon/Eris being transited by Uranus. Among other things (ALWAYS “among other things”.)

Once again you have given me a glimpse into things personal while painting pictures of things political. Sign of the Times, indeed.

“Iris is a messenger, a bridge, a connection between worlds and ways of thinking”.
    Nice. Thank you.

  11. Oh, it’s so good to have you back Len! Hope you are as well as this offering today indicates, as it’s a good’un. In fact, I’m delighted that you bring up QB1 and Iris, also noting how their less conspicuous, (really less conscious!) energies are participating in the big pattern of energy being dramatized by the Uranus square Pluto aspect. I’m hoping that Iris is still in the service of her mistress Juno, who still maintains that square with the north and south nodes of the transiting Moon.

By that I mean I hope Juno (who fights injustice and supports minority groups) is sending Iris with a message for Mars (and QB1) regarding the importance of the Zimmerman trial in the history of this country’s long acceptance of injustice. In fact, Juno herself stands at a doorway too. Either take the high road (the north node) or the same ole, same ole road (the south node) that leads to no where. She’s held that mid point position for over 2 months now, and it could just be that with Mars’ entrance into Cancer, it will be the push that America needa to get us over that threshold and through the doorway to our future.

It could happen you know. In just one week trans. Mars will conjunct the U.S. Sibly Venus, who is conjunct the U.S. Karma, as retrograde Mercury( stationing direct) conjuncts the U.S. Sun. Trans. Jupiter is there right now as the closing arguments take place and sitting on a jury can be tough. It makes a lot of sense, that bridge that you and Kirsti envision; tying the water grand trine as a way to cross over the cardinal square of Uranus-Pluto which holds us all in thrall. Those jurors will need to marshal that Mars courage to cross over the threshold that QB1 provides. We live in such interesting times, don’t we?

I seem to be custom designed to notice this. Aping the act of Empire leaves me face down in the mud and therein is the fall of my Taurus Mars and Cancer retro Saturn. It’s still a challenge to stand in my power and treat those placements with respect as a strong Mars in Taurus befuddles and confuses the devotees of Default Culture, a Saturn tuned into ancient cultures who respected the boundaries necessary to maintain nourishing environments seems backward and primitive to the denizens of Consumerville.

Adapting to a life without money you’re supposed to hate yourself. No money? You’re just lazy. It’s all your fault, you contemptible creature. As long as the Empire still breathes fire the traditional exaltations and falls hold some truth.
