Gendarmes watching protesters with a bit of curiosity and mild skepticism. Most of the guys looked like they were in their 20s. I talk to the French police every chance I get and so far, everyone I've met is amicable and human. They conduct themselves professionally, they hang loose, people causing a disturbance get quite a few chances before the paddy wagon is called, and officers seem quite aware that they're the city's first line of public relations.
