Planet Waves for October 2004

By ERIC FRANCIS

Aries (March 20-April 19)

One by one, planets have been thundering into your opposite sign, Libra. And there is a solar eclipse coming there on the 14th as well. All of this may have you under a lot of pressure to make decisions, particularly where people are concerned. On what basis should you be making up your mind? One and one alone -- whatever will make your life better. Yes, it's healthy to be concerned about the wellbeing of others, but at this point, what's good for you is very likely good for them. People close to you have a full life and will survive quite nicely without your attention. That more than anything is your ticket to freedom, because it seems like the theme of the season is relationships that are freed from dependency. We all know that obligation is a poor basis for choosing to be with someone. But it's rare that there feels like a perfect alternative.

Taurus (April 19-May 20)

Taurus is the sign most famous for staying the same, for doing things one way, and for refusing to budge on the issues. It's an astrological cliché, and usually deserves to be one. Yet with a lunar eclipse in your sign at the end of the month and much else developing besides, your deeper nature is likely to be working its way to the surface. Perhaps a revolution or volcanic eruption is in the works. Or perhaps you have finally decided to change your mind about something that has long been binding you to the past, most likely the way you've been trapped in one particular identity in your closest relationships. To release the future and let it be born, we must release the past and let it die. The important thing is to allow no one to dictate who you are, what you want, or how you feel.

Gemini (May 20-June 21)

It seems that you've finally plunged into some kind of decision, a point which has required more than a little mental processing to arrive at. You may feel like you've gone over this issue so many times that it's no fun any more. If so, it's partly because through so much care and analysis, the element of risk has been subtracted from the equation. Looked at another way, you were attempting to do something daring and challenging while being in a state of perfect balance. But like a trapeze artist making a tricky move, you need to find balance through reaching, stretching or letting go. Fortunately, a series of events is coming that will up-end all the little decisions you've made, the ideas you had about what you wanted, and what you think is creative. Suffice it to say that passion, art and love are born of risk. But this is a fine time to gamble.

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

While it's impossible for you to rush your emotions, they certainly have the power to rush you. And if I'm not mistaken, they're doing just that. Your usual instinct for self-protection may find itself without a job as you make choices that come as a huge surprise to everyone but the people who know you best. I don't necessarily include you on that list; but what happens over the next six or so weeks counts for a whole lot of getting to know yourself. It has, for months, seemed like everything you've wanted or needed existed as some kind of abstraction, idea or concept. Actually that's a good place to start the process of manifestation, but as of now you're well beyond the beginning. The most important improvements will come from the inside out, for instance: first you will feel at home, then you will find yourself at home.

Leo (July 22-Aug. 23)

Your best ideas are only as good as the good they do. I say that aware you may be considering something you know is brilliant. So brilliant that you may be feeling genuinely proud of what you're working on, and it is likely to be your best work in a long while. You may, as well, be pointing your ambitions skyward, toward doing something very daring with your career. And there seems to be an opening made just for you, and a chance to try something truly remarkable. I suggest you consider this an opportunity to experiment. Apply a little science to the situation: what are the effects of your efforts on the people they're intended for? What are the effects of your work on your own thought process? In the end, what are you contributing to the world? Let experience be your teacher. And remember that pride is healthy -- in moderation.

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)

The time has arrived to set your financial house in order. Financial planners say that even if you have no significant income, organizing your money and planning for the future are perfectly in order. You're no longer in the situation of having nothing to show for your efforts or your intelligence. By now, you know that the tide is turning, and that material rewards are on their way, if they're not already in your bank account. But there are pitfalls to success, and success is a learning process. I strongly suggest that, to the extent you stand to gain, you do your utmost to preserve those gains. If you're going to be extravagant, plan for it; the temptation to go overboard is dancing on the tip of your nose. Yet what you need, in my view as an astrologer, is an overall scheme, an organizational structure, and a systematic method of testing and implementing your ideas.

Libra (Sep. 22-Oct. 23)

While many around you are getting the "ready, steady, go" message, I suggest that Libra wait and see. I know, you're finally being spurred into action. Just give yourself a few weeks to tune into the new psychic environment. On Oct. 14 there's a solar eclipse in your sign, and that represents a threshold beyond which you cannot presently see. It's a point of no return, and you're not there yet. Therefore, the best advice any astrologer could give would be to wait until you can actually see who you've become and feel what's available before making any major investments or decisions you can't get out of easily. Jupiter has recently shown up in your birth sign, and that portends brilliant developments, new ideas, new places and new people, and the promise of a lot of room to grow. Just how far this all goes is precisely the missing data.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)

A close partner may finally be taking the lead in a romantic relationship, even acting on ideas you proposed long ago. Or they may finally own up to personal changes that have been brewing for a while. Take another deep breath and get ready to make an adjustment -- or rather, make it work for you. It appears in no uncertain terms that your relationship will benefit from progress. You may be at a point where you need a really big change, such as moving on. It may be that you have somehow not been involved with anyone for a long time and now suddenly the door will open based on your adopting an entirely new attitude. Or, most likely, you'll have a fine chance to get clear and sober with the people around you. Whatever the case, just don't cling to your current reality any more than it takes to have a few good, honest conversations.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 - Dec. 22)

Your ruling planet Jupiter has now taken up a year of residence in Libra, which is the best harbinger of public recognition that anyone could ever want -- assuming, of course, you have any desire to be recognized for your contributions. Desire or not, I am going to take an educated guess and say that you deserve recognition for something you've been up to. Success may have already come in other ways, such as promotion, increase in responsibilities or simply in improved performance and skill. But now the world is watching you -- a bigger world than you know. And the added gift of a solar eclipse is that you will have a chance to refine your message, your product or your ideas to match the scale of who you're reaching. Just remember a bit of noblesse oblige -- privilege implies an obligation to help, to serve and to hold the world together.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 20)

Personally and professionally, a truly exciting time is dawning in your life. As the next year progresses, I have a hunch you'll be granted many unexpected 'last chances' on projects and opportunities you thought had passed you by. But just because you're being given another opportunity doesn't mean you can just afford to sit back and consider whether it's really the right thing for you. You know what the right thing is, and you know why you might resist. I suggest you put a lot of thought into whether your personal relationships help you or slow you down. And I suggest you track this trend over the past 18 months, the time that Saturn has been in your opposite sign, Cancer. There are times that people succeed and have fulfilling lives in spite of the people around them. But usually, they succeed because they are supported emotionally, and in every other way.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)

By most accounts, the 9th house of astrology is considered one of the two most fortunate and generous; the other is the 11th. Presently there is a major buildup of energy in your solar 9th house, Libra. Jupiter has arrived, as has Mars, Mercury, Ceres and the Sun. And an eclipse of the Sun is already taking shape there. The 9th deals with what we believe about ourselves; it gives images of what is beyond what we think of as ourselves; and it takes us beyond the world we know -- our country and culture. You are now being given a once in a lifetime invitation to go beyond what you knew. You are being invited beyond your ego boundaries, and beyond your national boundaries. Your entire chart is howling, laughing and shaking your rafters with the message that there is more out there than you know, and begging you to find out.

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

For Pisces, life is a ride on a cosmic bubble. None of the certainties that exist for almost everyone else exist for you, and this often presents you and those around you with a reality gap. Your experience of life is soft, and the world changes by the hour. You seek comfort, pleasure and creation like few others you know. You have a drive to service that will only make you feel better about life. And, as has been the case for quite some time, too often you find yourself trapped within the hard-edges of everyone else's preconceptions. Yet Jupiter, Pisces Planet One, has recently moved into Libra, where it's exceptionally well placed. So have many other planets. For you this means options; it means opportunity; but more than anything, it means that certain people in your life are getting ready to drop some of their inhibitions. Just make sure you're ready to drop yours.
