Minor Planet Articles

Introduction. We live in a time of discovery, like none other in astrology or astronomy. My very educated mother was just showing us nine planets, and then suddenly she kinda lost count.

Election Results 2006: Turning the Tide

Democrats swept the crucial midterm legislative election of 2006, opening the way for progress. But Eric warns us not to rest on our political laurels because the real work likes ahead. Political victories are potentials; they are like checks that have not cleared the bank -- until we turn our newfound influence to power.

Silver Linings & Lesser Evils
Silver Linings & Lesser Evils

Planet Waves civil rights columnist Steve Bergstein looks closely at the election results, and the state of civil rights in the United States. The past six years under the current US administration have battered the ship, but if we pay attention and take action, we'll keep it floating. Steve's essays appear regularly on Planet Waves and on Psychsound.com.

To The Core: Looking Back at Predictions for 2006

In Parallel Worlds, the 2006 annual edition, Eric speculated about some of what was in store for 2006. "There are many who say the world is too far-gone to bother taking responsibility or action," he writes, "but this sounds like a convenient excuse to do nothing, or somebody else's excuse to get you to look the other direction."

Planet Waves visits Tropic of Capricorn

Eric recently filled in for Yasmin Boland, writing three weeks of daily horoscopes for Yahoo! Australia. Here is one of those weeks, the astrological story of five days. Additional weeks distributed to subscribers.

The Foggy New Edge of Neptune
The Foggy New Edge of Neptune

Over the summer, a group of astronomers decided that Pluto would no longer be a planet, but instead would be counted as a dwarf planet. Is this a denial trip -- pretending all the issues related to Pluto don't exist? Or does it open the way to Minor planets? Eric checks out the situation. Originated as a subscriber article.

Article on Pluto in the Wall Street Journal

The eminently prestigious Wall Street Journal was the first 'mainstream media' outfit to investigate the astrology angle on the discussion over Pluto's status. Eric Francis was interviewed, along with several other interesting astrologers.

The Continuing Discovery of Pluto
The Continuing Discovery of Pluto

Before Pluto was demoted, the possibility was raised that three other planets were likely to be accepted into the solar system: the first asteroid Ceres, Pluto's binary planet Charon, and something at the time called Xena (2003 UB 313, now called Eris). This article looks at the possibility. Originated as a subscriber article.

When All Else Fails, Laugh (links below)

During the controversy over whether Uranus is a planet, we took the liberty of demoting a couple of other things called planets -- first Uranus, then, why not, the Earth. These are not actually true articles, though some people believed them. Breaking News: Uranus Not a Planet and Scientists Declare Earth Not a Planet.

What is a Planet?
What is a Planet?

Eric explores the possible definitions of a planet in the weeks prior to the astronomers' meeting where Pluto was 'demoted'. This originally appeared in Chronogram magazine in New York.

Saturn in Leo

Saturn's historic change of signs from Cancer to Leo, which occurred in July 2005 and lasts through late 2007, has several interesting properties. One is that patents filed during this time tend to stick; nearly everything you see in your house depends on an invention patented during Saturn in Leo. The other is dams bursting. This prescient series of article depends mostly on 20/20 hindsight -- and was written right before the New Orleans disaster. Part one: Saturn, Leo and History. Part two, When the Molasses Levee Breaks.

Katrina, the Awakener
Katrina, the Awakener

"Hurricane Katrina's destruction of New Orleans was a wakeup call for everyone, on climate change, social responsibility and the ineptitude of the current federal government to do anything particularly helpful. This article looks at the astrology of
the situation."

Auschwitz Photo Series

This touching, at times raging series of photos and articles was put together the week after Eric returned from a visit to Krakow and Auschwitz.

A couple of years ago at an herbal conference, Eric pulled off a vigilante sex education workshop called Cunnilingus and Clover. Here is the sumptuous account of the afternoon's events.

SUNY New Paltz PCBs - and Beyond

This is a collection of Eric's reporting on chemicals called PCBs, which he first encountered as a grad school dropout at SUNY New Paltz. This collection includes the subsequent article in Sierra that looks at the century-long history of this annoying supertoxin. This is the campus article heard round the world.

Gender Fear Series
Gender Fear Series

Readers from around the world have contributed to this series, a kind of spontaneous dialog on gender themes and issues. In a discussion rare for its time in history, we hear people share their truths about fear of the opposite sex. There are even some ideas for what we can do about it.
