Virgo, the Virgin

"This sign is one of the most significant in the zodiac, for its symbology concerns the whole goal of the evolutionary process, which is to shield, nurture and finally reveal the hidden spiritual reality. This, every form veils. But the human form is equipped and fitted to manifest it in a manner different than any other expression of divinity, and so make tangible and objective that for which the whole creative process was intended. Gemini and Virgo are closely related, but Gemini presents the pairs of opposites -- soul and body -- as two separate entities [in relationship], whereas in Virgo, they are blended and of great and supreme importance to each other; the mother protects the germ of the Christ life; matter guards, cherishes and nurtures the hidden soul."

Why Americans Should Care About East Timor

All dates are approximate in sun-sign horoscopes because the sign changes are a little different each year. Please check with an astrologer or chart service to determine your sign if you are on the cusp. It's also good to know your rising sign and moon signs.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)
Among the many fine lines in this world is the one separating power and the abuse of power. This is slippery, because for the most part we are taught by parents and schools how to be victims and not assert ourselves, so when we have that first taste of authority or impact, the tendency is to see how far we can take things. I don't recommend such a course of action right now. At the moment, there are far too many matters of deep inner concern, issues that could truly be called spiritual in nature because they involve the meaning of existence and facing some of the allegedly darker, but really just deeper, sides of your nature. Focusing your attention inwardly as much as possible, and on noticing what you don't normally notice, will result in your taking concrete, measurable steps toward your freedom.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
The planet Venus is retrograde the least of all the players in astrology; while many planets are retrograde nearly half the time, and Mercury is retrograde about one-fifth of the time, Venus's period of apparent backwards motion is approximately six weeks once every two years. When she changes direction, as she does next week back to normal, forward motion, this is certain to indicate a shift in the climate and character of your life. In particular, you may feel that there have been many unfulfilled promises for contentment and prosperity, which has grown into a phase where there is barely a moment's peace. My sense is that you have done some difficult and challenging work in this time, and have set many things in order, the rewards of which you will soon begin to see. But it's necessary to have some conscious recognition of your need to learn how to receive that which is given you, and that which you've earned. You can't be forced to be happy.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
Ah yes, that awesomely interesting issue of thoughts versus feelings appears again. Which is the right way to process reality? Which is the more honest approach to the inner life? Can we really analyze our feelings, and what about how we feel about our thoughts? It would seem that you are in close to perfect balance on this at the moment, and just in time because there is surely plenty of subject matter to assess. Here's a little "systems diagnostic" that is germane to your current affairs: when you experience what you call love, where and how does this happen? What is the process, and where, if anywhere, in your body does the experience arrive? Keep checking; love is changing.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Though what you may feel is a very real career potential may take some weeks to manifest, have faith that the wheels are in motion. Since you have a little time, we can afford to think, and it would make sense to look at the components of "career." One involves understanding your role in the community. This is currently where the most obvious information is available. Next would be exploring the line between your personal sense of self and self-esteem (which literally means "holding yourself in esteem," which is a good trick) and how that translates to your worth financially. Last is the most challenging -- checking in with where your creative focus meets your professional focus. There is no room for compromises here, but a lot of room for growth.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
Venus is credited with bestowing all kinds of gifts, like beauty, abundance and sexual pleasure. But the most under-rated quality of Venus is her association with intelligence, the kind computers will never, or hopefully never, learn. It is the intelligence of knowing when things feel right because you feel good; seeing beauty as the most important form of correctness; the wisdom of accepting situations that work out the best for everyone because that is a normal (read: moral) state of affairs. More than anything, to me Venus represents the intelligence of accepting the personal gifts with which we were born, and putting them to work for us. There is no need to wait any longer.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
The New Moon in your birth sign on 9-9-99 has to be telling you something. But more than what this beautiful synchronicity is saying, I am more interested in what you are asking. The Nines represent the brink of change or completion. Yet astrology is far better at raising questions than it is at providing answers. The biggest question I see is, if you could change your relationship to your entire past, what would you create? This may involve a revisioning of history, a re-use of the lessons you learned in your family, or, most likely, tapping into cultural and genetic resources that are far deeper than any parent, grandparent or great-grandparent ever hinted might be yours.

LIBRA (Sep. 23-Oct. 22)
The remaining months of this year are a critical time for you, and your first necessity is to remain in balance. Now, balance is always one of those big questions for the Libra soul, at least according to groovy astrology, but I mean this in very concrete ways. I suggest you cut yourself a bigger slice of the pie of space and time than you're used to, specifically for attending to your inner needs, emotional processing and meditating on the vast possibilities of life. Any curiosity that you find yourself consumed with would best be directed toward yourself. Now through Sept. 23 is especially important, given that there's so much activity before then over which you have no control, but which you'd benefit greatly from noticing.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
Inch by inch, you are working your way to a more healthy view of life and sense of your own potential. I am aware that these have not been especially easy years, or for that matter, decades to be alive as a Scorpio. There has been so much crisis; so many lessons; so much of what seemed like pointless loss, with the constant expectation that things would go crazy again. And though it may not be clear to you now, your process of cleaning up from all the disasters of the past is finally drawing to a close. But it's vital that you not lose your grip now; that you maintain your persevering attitude, and not take anything for granted.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)
If you feel like you're walking around the world being followed by spotlights and television cameras, this would be an excellent moment to inject your most passionate viewpoint into the hologram of reality, despite what anyone else thinks is right or wrong, and despite the ways people are expecting you to change. You have an awesome moment to make your mark on the world and to begin creating the kind of reputation you know you deserve. Others may have their opinions, but it would serve them well to attend to their own lives, and for you to not give a second thought to anything intended to cause you doubt or pain.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
Change is a mysterious process, and sometimes we need to be seduced into it, and that means sometimes, as with passion, we need to allow ourselves to be seduced into it. But remember that the nature of the risks you are considering really involves what you will allow yourself to believe to be true, or at least, to be possible. Bear in mind that new possibilities threaten old conclusions, and old conclusions love to scream and struggle for life. Who knows why. Sure, they represent a safety zone, but times are changing very, very fast, and we need to update our facts, and our sense of potential, very frequently.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 18)
The issue really does involve your parents. It's not that they are bad people. There is just no way what they experienced could have possibly prepared you for what you would experience. And while we are often taught to respect our parents to an extreme, that does not include the form of "respect" involving clutching their false, outdated or otherwise obsolete notions about life. Most of the readers of this column had parents born in generations when security was a major crisis (the Reagan generation), or, in more modern times, when there has been a very significant crisis around selfishness. You are of a different galactic strain, and represent the wisdom of a different age -- that of the future -- no matter when you were born.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
It's been a close call whether to highlight relationships or career in the Pisces interpretations, yet as it works out, everything in life is about relationships, and everything in your present life seems to be surrounding your professional affairs, even the most intimate aspects of who you are. Nothing is definite at the moment, but doors are opening, others are closing, and you are starting to get some thrust behind you, and, I would dare say, to make an impression. But these weeks are merely a rehearsal of what is to come, a time to practice and get in shape and have a taste of the way of the future.

For the Faithful
The new moon in Virgo falls on 9/9/99, which is one of those beautiful synchronicities, but it's also an important test for the Y2K situation. Several programmers and other informed sources I've spoken with have said that this date is one of the turning points in the widely-feared, widely-ignored and often misunderstood potential computer system crisis, even though the media emphasis has been on Jan. 1, 2000. So let's watch carefully, and, more personally, bear in mind that these are, for our culture, the last weeks and months of an age of humanity, one from which we have a number of rather significant lessons to learn and observations to make.
